Hi I'm Lynchy. This is my first post after registering about an hour ago. I'll keep it to the point as I get the idea ur all quite busy on here. Got online in July of this year for first time with an older office computer I upgraded to minimum standard for ISP signup. Runs windows 98. For first few weeks I underestimated and ran online without any protection at all. Soon got CWS home search assistant infection and after finally getting some free spyware utilities discovered I had other less risky but annoying infections too. Like a joke page that made my screen go black and wouldn't allow me to change my wallpaper, think I had a keylogger too and my homepage got hijacked all the time and I couldn't even reset it to default. Or read my yahoo mail as I kept getting redirected to CWS homepage. And the popups were relentless and frustrating. My PC completely slowed down to less than a crawl on websites.
After a bit of trial an error and asking for advice I Installed a firewall and antivirus and set about trying to self heal my PC from behind this barrier. Using a free uninstall program called "Uninstall" I could see what was recently Installed on the machine and ruthlessly just had the program uninstall any I didn't like the sound of like search extender, search assistant, and home search i think. THis prog also let me stop some things from running that I wasn't sure about. Like Netig.exe,Rundll32.exe, load power profile(two progs wi different registry entries). Anyway you see what I'm getting at and the nature of the problem. I have an error loading windows\temp\SE.DLL at startup, that message box pops up but I think it was part of CWS and it stops if I uncheck it on uninstall startup manager. THeres also intell32.exe that has its own icon down in the bottom right of the screen amongst the running progs box if I allow it to run.(red with a ! inside it) If so its hard to shut down but it dissapears sometimes on its own. Think thats the firewall doing its job ?????? I've also had PSguard Install itself on my computer last night without permission. Could just be coincidence but after I downloaded some tools from Bleeping computer that were useless as I couldn't unzip them in this Program manager group apparently. Then that thing installed itself not long after?????
So by trial and error I have managed to get my PC to speed up a bit and no more popups or hijacked homepage. Browsing is much more pleasurable and trouble free now. But I still have a problem. I've deleted some files by hand and although I can't discern any loss in function in what I do online I still get crashes and it takes a longer time to shut the PC down. And always asks to scandisk at next startup. My hotmail page is annoying and seems buggy. So What do I need to do to finally get my PC in a healthy state of affairs so that all the bad is outside the firewall and none left on my side? I'm vexed and so I've come to you's guys for advice and help. Thanx for any you can give and I'll try my best to pass it on responsibly.
My main aim is to get all my business like household bills and bank accounts up and running on the Internet and I am shy to take the risk until I know for sure that I'm dayam near over 95% protected as I hear so many off putting things about keyloggers etc stealing account details. Thank you for your help and time you give me. Bye for now. Lynchy. :)

PS Hope I haven't been too long winded but now its out the way posts should be shorter and more just following INstructions given. Thank you.
hi sorry t keep you waiting as you can see we are stumped with logs if you still require assistance please post a fresh hijackthis log for review many things could have changed until now
Ok dokey. Heres my new hijack this logfile. I couldn't resist having a mess about with hijack this when i got it. This logfile is one where I restored everything I deleted back to their original locations. So I'll leave it in your hands now and not do anything unless you ask me too. I've ran adaware and spybot too and deleted most of the PSguard files and Intell32.exe file. Previous to your reply to me. I'm aware that you do this voluntary so I've no complaints just grateful for your time and energy. By the way when I try to save a logfile in Hijackthis, media player opens and something about cant verify blah blah. I have to change the extension to .txt by hand to save as a notepad file. Is that common or a bug in my system. Cheers from Lynchy. :)

hi
there are several infections, we will have to clean them one at a time

first one of the coolwebsearch variants:

Step#1
Download CWShredder

If you do not have a zip program please download the evaluation version of Winzip.

Step#2
Download SpSeHjfix109.zip to the desktop. Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix then unzip SpSeHjfx109.zip into the new folder.

Step#3
Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.

Step#4
Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Step#5
Reboot into Safe Mode by Tapping F8 while booting up then navigate to the folder on your desktop called spfix and then

Step#6
Run 'SpSeHjfx109.exe'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the spfix folder.

Step#7
Once it is finished, Fix with CWShredder - Click The FIX button!

Step#8
Reboot into Safe Mode and Repeat steps 5, 6 and 7 above

Step#9
Reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix109'

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

next the other coolwebsearch variant:

Please save these instructions to WordPad so that you have them accessible while following the steps. You also may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. You must disconnect from the internet totally, as staying connected while fixing will prevent the fix from working. Also please keep Internet Explorer and Outlook Express closed throughout as opening them will reinstall the infection. Read through all the instructions so that you can ask any questions now, before you disconnect from the Internet.

Close Outlook Express and Internet Explorer for the duration of this fix

Please continue with the next steps and if you run into any problems with the current one, just keep going through the list step by step. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you finally reply.

Step#1:Make Sure Hidden Files Are Visible
  • Please make sure you can view all Hidden Files by choosing the instructions for your Windows OS.
Step#2:Download and Update CWShredder
  • Download CWShredder.Do Not Use It Yet
  • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
  • make sure it is up to date.
Step#3:Download DllCompareStep#4:Download Killbox
  • Download the Killbox.Do Not Use It Yet
  • Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location.
Step#5:Download About Buster
  • Please download About:Buster from here: Do Not Use It Yet
  • About Buster.
  • extract it to c:\aboutbuster.
  • update. to latest definitions
Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

Step#6:Reboot To Safe Mode

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

Step#7: Use CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • REBOOT back into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up.l
Step#8:Use DllCompare
  • Open DllCompare.exe to run the program.
  • Click "Run Locate.com" and it will scan your system for files.
  • Once the scan has finished click "Compare" to compare your files to valid Windows files.
Files in the upper window have now been verified to "exist", Files in the lower window were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the lower window when the Compare scan is complete.
  • Once it has finished comparing click " Make a Log of what was found".
  • Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files)
  • Click "Yes" at the ‘View Log file’ prompt to view the log.
  • Copy and paste the entire log into your next reply after completing all steps.(saved as log.txt in the DllCompare folder)
  • Click "Exit".
Step#9:Delete Infected Files

Please boot into Safe Mode and delete the following files:(if still there)
  • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CMMPU.EXE
  • C:\WINDOWS\zxxqv.dll
  • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NTOG.DLL
Step#10:Use Killbox(may not be necessary)
  • If unable to delete files above in safe mode please use KillBox that you downloaded earlier:
  • Open KillBox
  • Highlight the list of names to delete then CTRL-C to copy and then in killbox go file> paste from clipboard
  • Choose Delete on Reboot.
  • Click the "Delete File" button which looks like a stop sign.
  • Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
  • If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Step#11:Use HijackThis

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\zxxqv.dll/sp.html#58582
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

F1 - win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\cmmpu.exe hpfsched

Step#12:Use About Buster

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.
  • Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe
  • When the tool is open press the OK button,
  • then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button.
  • It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • Post the log file in your next reply
Step#13:Use Registry File
  • Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

  • Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.
Reboot your computer back to normal mode

Reconnect To The Internet

Step#14:Use HijackThis and Post To Thread In Forum

1. Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

2. Post your logs from About Buster, DllCompare and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.

before that we still have the smithfraud trojan to fix, but it is necessary to clean the other infections first as those could prevent the smithfraud fix

cheers and good luck :D
Wow that's a lot of steps and cleaning to do. I must have picked up a lot of stuff that has been just hiding on my machine. Last night Avg reported a trojan and its never done that before. I've touched nothing since you got in touch with me. Or even done anything about scanning for that trojan yet. I have to ask before I start on this task you've set me. I don't have an OEM Windows Installation disc or even an upgrade one. So how can I replace those files at the end of the process? Are they downloadable from anywhere? If not I will have to obtain one before doing anything because if I can't replace files it defeats the purpose. I've been meaning to get one of ebay but as I'm in a mess with spyware I can't do that at the moment. A friend gave me a copy of an ME upgrade disc. You think they will be on that? Can I extract without a registration key. I do everything on the patch and mend it's just my way lol. Meanwhile I'll be studying those Instructions to make sure I understand them. It may take a couple of days to carry them out as I work slowly but efficiently. Bear with me. Thanx. Lynchy :)
Hello Illukka

Don't pay too much attention to the above post. Just me Blabbering on. Hope your having a good day?
Anyway I made it to step nine of the fixes you set me. And below are the results. Pesky computer would'nt reboot after I used spfix in safe mode and so had to do that manually. Also hijack this and spfix open media player to save logs when I think its .txt files they should be saving as. Am I right? Cws shredder found no files and made no changes but I did waste that one myself previously with a prog called "your Uninstaller 2005" (a lucky punch on my part)So I do already have files missing and I guess I will live with that till I'm able to replace them. But your helping me lots because I would'nt have known my system was clean of them or how to rid them off registry if It wasn't for the knowledge and good will of the Tom Coyote guy's like yourself, cheers. So here's the logs you want to look at and I'll continue with the other Instructions. Bye 4 now. Lynchy

hi

now lets kill the smithfraud trojan :D
again print this or save as a notepad file to be able to read the instructions while in safe mode

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
Remove the check by "View my Active desktop as a web page".
Click OK then Apply and OK.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.
Ok illukka my man. Here's the lowdown so far. Finished the steps you gave me regarding the CWS malware. Note there is no aboutbuster log as the link to malaware.biz failed on me many times. Doownloaded from download.com but could'nt update it at all. First line in hijack this log that u wanted fixed is still there as spybot S&D kept overiding my fix on that when I booted back into normal mode. Tried it several time honest. Everything else went according to plan. I'm going to go ahead with the smithfraud thing now. :D Lynchy.

Back again. How's it goin? Ok. The smithfraud virus. Did all the steps and definitely noticed that my screen changed back to its default and remnants of and old stuck wallpaper gone. Now I know what smithfraud does. Cool! I also learnt that PSguard and Intel32.exe are related or the same. When I rebooted teatimer denied the changes to registry so they are back. That psguard has tons of registry keys on adaware scan. Scan does nothing as it is reinstalled on PC and icon currently sitting on my desktop. Help to kill this parading parasite once and for all please. It must die die die hahahah. See when that wee teatimer box comes on to tell about registry changes. How do I overide it cos the bottom right button is blank and only half formed like it did'nt load properly. I feel its working against me on this. :( Bye for now.

hi

edited:

forgot to add tea timer disabling instuctions:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

looks like the tool failed to clean wininet.dll

to fix it follow the instructions below:

Click start>run and type command (cmd for NT).

Type:

copy c:\windows\system\wininet.dll c:\windows\desktop

Reboot. Scan the desktop folder with eTrust Web Scanner. When done, make sure the box is check for wininet.dll and click cure.

Reboot to command prompt and delete system\wininet and oleadm (oleext), then copy clean wininet from desktop.

del c:\windows\system\wininet.dll

del c:\windows\system\oleadm.dll (oleext.dll)

copy c:\windows\desktop\wininet.dll c:\windows\system

reboot back to normal mode
rescan with panda active scan and post its log and a fresh hijackthis log

Here's my last log hopefully. Did a scan with adaware just to be sure and found nothing except three tracking cookies. But I'm not bothered as they only have a TAC rating of three and I feel confident I can sort it. It's been a pleasure having your help and thank you for helping me take back control of my machine. It feels shiny and clean lol. Cheers illukka :D

hi

well done :D

now to make sure it does not happen again:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
