Welcome back, JuliaS!!!

:wavey:

I assisted you last time you were here.

You are the victim of one of the latest infections going around the internet.

Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.

Reboot now, and continue the fix immeadiately after the reboot.
  • Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
  • Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
    • All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
  • Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
  • Double click on KillVundo.bat
    • When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
  • Please press any key to continue.
  • Wait for HiJackThis to open.
  • When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only.

Place a check next to the following items, if found:

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\fontc.dll

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: fontc - C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\fontc.dll

  • Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death".

Don't worry, this is normal!!!

Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

After the reboot "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log, as well as the contents of vundofix.txt (which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix) into this thread.

If those two lines we "fixed" return in the log file, reboot and try the fix once more. It can be a very stubborn infection and many times the "fix" will work the 2nd time around (if it didn't the 1st time).
:)
I'm sorry, I can't access the "VundoFix" tool. I followed the link, but can't find the download. (This could quite possibly just be me in a dumb state of mind)
It was working earlier…. The web site must be doing some "reconstruction" 'cuz I can't find it either… <_< I'll post again when I locate it…
It seems "VundoFix.zip" will no loner be available. I know of a "more complicated" way to remove the malware. Give me a bit to compose it.
First, I need some input from you.

Download/install APM

Run APM

Click on each item in the upper window, then look in the lower window.

Check to see which processes are using C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\fontc.dll

Post back letting me know all processes using that DLL.
:)
To make this fix easier on you, please do this:

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

dir c:\fontc.* /ah /s > files.txt
dir c:\fontc.* /s >> files.txt
dir c:\ctnof.* /ah /s >> files.txt
dir c:\ctnof.* /s >> files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop.

Wait for a Notepad window to open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.
:)
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop>dir c:\fontc.* /ah /s 1>files.txt C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop>dir c:\fontc.* /s 1>>files.txt C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop>dir c:\ctnof.* /ah /s 1>>files.txt C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop>dir c:\ctnof.* /s 1>>files.txt File Not Found C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop>notepad files.txt
That didn't work out quite like I expected…

Let's narrow the search down a bit.

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

dir C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ /ah > files.txt
dir C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ >> files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop.

Wait for a Notepad window to open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.

This will contain more than I want, but I'll pick thru it.

I'm looking for "ini" or "bak" files associated with this infection. If we don't kill them off, it will return.

:)
My last post contained the contents of "ff.bat" but there was a file created on my desktop when I opened ff.bat… I think that contains what you're looking for. Here's the contents of that: Volume in drive C is PRESARIO Volume Serial Number is A810-0F1A Directory of c:\WINDOWS\Fonts 09/03/2005 03:07 PM 516,116 fontc.dll 1 File(s) 516,116 bytes Total Files Listed: 1 File(s) 516,116 bytes 0 Dir(s) 136,297,287,680 bytes free Volume in drive C is PRESARIO Volume Serial Number is A810-0F1A Directory of c:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\file 05/16/2005 12:41 PM 1,486 fontc.class-621fc2f2-48a1c446.class 05/16/2005 12:41 PM 264 fontc.class-621fc2f2-48a1c446.idx 2 File(s) 1,750 bytes Total Files Listed: 2 File(s) 1,750 bytes 0 Dir(s) 136,297,287,680 bytes free Volume in drive C is PRESARIO Volume Serial Number is A810-0F1A Directory of c:\WINDOWS\Fonts 09/03/2005 03:08 PM 178,662 ctnof.bak1 09/07/2005 06:35 AM 180,035 ctnof.bak2 09/06/2005 05:27 PM 181,349 ctnof.ini 09/07/2005 06:40 AM 179,754 ctnof.ini2 09/06/2005 05:29 PM 180,577 ctnof.tmp 5 File(s) 900,377 bytes Total Files Listed: 5 File(s) 900,377 bytes 0 Dir(s) 136,297,287,680 bytes free Volume in drive C is PRESARIO Volume Serial Number is A810-0F1A
Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from:

Process Explorer

Also download/unzip KillBox by Option^Explicit from:

Killbox.zip

Step 2:

Download this file and save it to your desktop:

FixVundo Registry File

Copy/paste the text in the Quote box below into Notepad, and save it on the desktop as "killme.txt"

c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\fontc.dll
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.bak1
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.bak2
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.ini
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.ini2
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.tmp

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of fontc.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the fontc.dll under winlogon click OK.

If you see any ".ini" or ".bak" files with either the same name or the file name in reverse kill them as well.

Files to look for:
————————–
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.bak1
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.bak2
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.ini
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.ini2
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.tmp

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of fontc.dll then click the kill button.

If you see any ".ini" or ".bak" files with either the same name or the file name in reverse kill them as well.

Files to look for:
————————–
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.bak1
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.bak2
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.ini
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.ini2
c:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ctnof.tmp

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run Hijack This! and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\fontc.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: fontc - C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\fontc.dll

Now click Fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

On the desktop, open the "killme.txt" file with Notepad.

Then copy the all file names in the "killme.txt" to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing C (hold the key down, then press C):

Close "killme.txt".

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the Delete on reboot button.

In Killbox, click File (in the upper left of Killbox), and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

Pop-ups stopped?

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
