Here is my log. I would appreciate any help. My computer is running EXTREMELY slow. I run adaware all the time, but things never go away. Also too many things in the start tray. I am afraid to make many changes without some professional help. My 12 year old has been spending way too much time online this summer and my computer is unrecognizable.

Thx much!

I should add that when my internet connection is down I get a message that something like www.spuni.com cannot be found. I need to write down the exact address. I think there is a dialer or something that is usually running that I don't see evidence of unless my dsl is down
Hello skigirl33, Welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

You need to update your version of HijackThis. Open HJT> Open Misc Tools> Pull the side bar down> Check for update online. If that doesn't work, download it from my signature and remove the hijackThis.exe you have now.

Also please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

After the above:

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks LDTate for your help.

I followed your instructions and have posted a new log below. I think everything went ok with one exception. Spybot is not removing Wild Tangent. Spybot says it is removed, but it shows up on the next scan. I thought I had previously uninstalled it, there is no program folder and it doesn't show up under the add/remove control panel, but there is a wild tangent control panel that I can't seem to remove.

I got rid of the attempts to connect to spuni by uninstalling netscape 8.0. I have been watching my connections in Norton and found out where that was coming from.

No other suspicious activity yet, but I should probably wait a day or so to report if anything else is going on.

Hopefully all will be well if you can help me get rid of wild tangent.

Thanks again for everything!

skigirl

ok, I used the registry cleaner and I am ashamed/abashed to admit that there were 234 entries cleaned up. I have posted a new log below.

My xp account seems to be acting ok, but I did notice that my 12 yr old daughter has dropspam as her homepage. I thought that had been removed, but I was out of town for a couple of days so who knows what she has changed.

Let me know what to do next and THANK YOU so much for sticking with me on this.

After you do the below under your screen name, can you login as your daughter and post a HJT log?

Good Job

Log looks good :D

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Followed your instructions. I have posted a hjt log from my daughter's account.

As for your other advice, I am getting those 3 programs. Additionally, I have 2005 Norton Antivirus installed and am using the firewall with XP SP2. Do I need another firewall?

Thanks again for your help!

I don't see anything bad in your log, but let's see if we can find any bad guys.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
