I have been hit by something very nasty - it prevents me from opening any web pages and also blocks the installation of anything that can possibly remove it.

I am at a loss with this, since I can't install any tools to take it out. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you.
Hello ITguy, welcome to the TC.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I apologize for the delay but it has taken me a while to get back to this - I followed your instructions to the letter but the issue remains. Here is the new Hijack This! log, as you can see - most of the entries you identified remain (a few did vanish):

My computer acts exactly like it did before but I noted that it only happens in one profile. The computer will open the home page and others but not search pages or anything that can possibly "hurt" the hijacking software - I was able to open pages like Amazon.com but not Ebay????

One point where I could conceivably have missed something - when I was clearing the temp folders in all the profiles - one or two did not allow me to access the "local settings" - they were old profiles no longer used anyway. Could they have been the problem?

What do you think?

Thanks,

ITguy
I see you use Fortres at school. I work at a high school where we use to use that also. We now use Drive Shield amongest others.

Next, launch Notepad, and copy/paste all the blue REGEDIT below to it
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges]

Back on the Desktop, double-click on the fixme.reg file you just saved and click on Yes when asked to merge the information.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.
It didn't work, the registry fix went in without a problem but did not change anything.

Here's the new log:
