This is an additional post from Emily: sorry, all, I am a newbie and just saw the instructions about posting a description of what is going on with my computer. In Windows 2000, can perform any operation in any account–not just the Administrator account. That is, I can install software, run anti-virus programs and Win-Doctor, etc, in any account. I had Windows reloaded a few months ago, and it worked fine initially. When this change took place, I started looking around and found in Documents and Settings a folder that I don't think was there initially called All Users.WINNT. There are also two hidden files in Documents and Settings: one is called Default User, and the other is called Default User.WINNT. Thanks for whatever help you can give.
It's still Emily. I have figured out that the priviliges on all my Windows 2000 accounts had all been reset to administrator level. I don't know how that happened, and I have corrected it. I notice when I run WinDoctor, I am told that C\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\Run Time\0701\Intel32\DotNetInstaller.exe cannot access a necessary file, “mscoree.dll.” Also, when I defragment the hard drive, I end up with two bands of systems files out to the right of the contiguous files, by themselves. Files that do not defragment are shown in the following report: Volume (C:): Volume size = 78,152 MB Cluster size = 4 KB Used space = 12,215 MB Free space = 65,937 MB Percent free space = 84 % Volume fragmentation Total fragmentation = 0 % File fragmentation = 0 % Free space fragmentation = 0 % File fragmentation Total files = 30,436 Average file size = 495 KB Total fragmented files = 6 Total excess fragments = 47 Average fragments per file = 1.00 Pagefile fragmentation Pagefile size = 384 MB Total fragments = 1 Directory fragmentation Total directories = 2,669 Fragmented directories = 1 Excess directory fragments = 1 Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation Total MFT size = 48,400 KB MFT record count = 33,150 Percent MFT in use = 68 % Total MFT fragments = 2 ——————————————————————————– Fragments File Size Files that did not defragment 21 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\SOFTWARE.LOG 2 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\DEFAULT.LOG 10 1 KB \Documents and Settings\Administrator\ntuser.dat.LOG 2 4 KB \Documents and Settings\All Users.WINNT\Application Data\AOL\ACS\1.0\ph 2 984 KB \WINNT\ShellIconCache ******************************************************************** I may not have a problem at all, but I would very much like someone's opinion regarding whether it sounds as if my computer is hyjacked. Many thanks, Emily
Please help. I have been having various problems with computer running slow, etc. Recently, my McAfee was updated and I ran a scan, my Trend Micro Anti-spyware notified me that something was trying to change my Shell settings. I assumed Anti-spyware was just noticing that a scan was running, so I told it to accept the change. Now I am wondering if something was disabling my McAfee…

Please check my HJT scan to see if I have a problem. Thanks! Emily

Hello Emily, Its important to keep all your posts in one thread by using the Reply button and not start a new topic. We search for logs with zero replies and by you replying to yourself, you took yourself out of that catagory. I am going to look over your log and be back to your shortly. Ken :D
Hello Again Emily :D

There are a lot of things that can slow down a computer, but it appears that a virus or spyware is not the problem on your system. Right click on My Computer and go to Properties and post back with the type of processor you have and most importantly the amount of memory. I am asking you this because I don't have any information about your system, and you have Norton Utilities running which is a resouce hog and maybe slowing you down. A full suite of programs on an older system is not a good idea performance wise. There are so many good free programs that will do the job and not bog down your system. I can't and don't want to dictate what you should have on your system, but if it was mine, I would only have one good virus program and a few good anti spyware programs.

Lets try a couple of things to get rid of all the excess garbage on your system.
Download and run CCleaner
It is a very safe program to run. It will clean out all kinds of not needed crappola on your system
It will also clean out all your cookies, so if there are some you are dependant on, open the program and go to
OPTIONS> COOKIES and all your cookies will load in the left window,
just move the ones you want to keep to the right window.

Now run the system defrag utility, since you have Norton, it may run there own program, I believe its called Speed Disk.

To be on the safe side because sometimes viruses hide from us, run a couple of free online virus scanners and lets see what they turn up. Have them set to Auto-Clean or to Fix What they find, and post back and let me know if they found anything and could not fix it.

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When your done, post the back with the amount of memory you have and the results of the scans and a new HJT log please.

Ken :D

Emily was my moms name. :D
Thanks, Ken. I didn't care much for "Emily" as a kid, but it's sort of grown on me over the years. FYI, the reason I keep Norton's Utilities is for WinDoctor and GoBack. You could probably tell me something to use in place of WinDoctor, but GoBack has saved my skin a ton of times–most recently, last week. (Is there something else that would do the work of GoBack and is not a resource hog?) WinDoctor is currently finding two things it can't fix: a missing DotNetInstaller.exe and an invalid Active X command that it tells me it has fixed, but if I re-run WinDoctor, the Active X command shows up again. I run Spybot and AdAware on a daily basis, and I have Spyware Blaster on my machine. I recently downloaded a trial version of the Trend Micro Anti-Spyware, and it has served me well. My time is running out, and I'm wondering if I should buy it. I just got a McAfee update, which I'm running now. At the end of the update, the Trend Micro Venus Spy Trap popped up and said, "Software has attempted to change your systems shell settings." The details were: Description: Personal Folder Location: C\Documents and Settings\Default User.WINNT\My Documents I have posted this question previously. I wasn't sure whether Venus Spy Trap was reacting to the McAfee download, or if something in my system was cancelling out the McAfee update. CC Cleaner only came up with some minimal history stuff. I defrag pretty frequently. All I had was one tiny fragment today, but I am concerned about the pattern I posted about previously: There are a couple of individual systems files and contiguous files that show up way to the right of the rest of the display when I run a defrag. I'm afraid that's something hidden off somewhere. Here are the things that did not defrag: Volume (C:): Volume size = 78,152 MB Cluster size = 4 KB Used space = 12,225 MB Free space = 65,926 MB Percent free space = 84 % Volume fragmentation Total fragmentation = 0 % File fragmentation = 0 % Free space fragmentation = 0 % File fragmentation Total files = 30,798 Average file size = 491 KB Total fragmented files = 7 Total excess fragments = 26 Average fragments per file = 1.00 Pagefile fragmentation Pagefile size = 384 MB Total fragments = 1 Directory fragmentation Total directories = 2,688 Fragmented directories = 1 Excess directory fragments = 1 Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation Total MFT size = 48,400 KB MFT record count = 33,530 Percent MFT in use = 69 % Total MFT fragments = 2 ——————————————————————————– Fragments File Size Files that did not defragment 2 656 KB \WINNT\system32\config\SECURITY 7 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\SECURITY.LOG 2 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\SOFTWARE.LOG 2 4 KB \Documents and Settings\All Users.WINNT\Application Data\AOL\ACS\1.0\ph 2 13 KB \Documents and Settings\All Users.WINNT\Application Data\AOL\ACS\1.0\variable 2 443 KB \WINNT\ShellIconCache ******************************************************************** Bitedefender didn't find anything. However, when I ran Panda, it found two pieces of spyware and two dialers. Then, in the middle of the scan, the scan stopped, and the following message showed up in a window headed Microsoft Outlook: "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client." I did not check "okay." I closed the Microsoft Outlook popup window. At that point, the Panda Activescan gave me the message that the scan was finished and that it had found threats (the 4 I mentioned). The bar indicating scan progress was only halfway across and never moved again after the Microsoft Popup appeared. I thought that might be some kind of a fluke, so I ran Panda again, and it did exactly the same thing. Here are the four items found: Incident Status Location Dialer:dialer.bjp No disinfected HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS\ZONEMAP\DOMAINS\ARCHIVIOSEX.NET Dialer:dialer.akd No disinfected HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS\ZONEMAP\DOMAINS\SGRUNT.BIZ Spyware:spyware/bargainbuddy No disinfected Windows Registry Spyware:Spyware/Cydoor No disinfected C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Dummies\dummy.cd_clint.dll ******************************************************************* When I right click and go to Properties, here's what it tells me. Oh, and the drive capacity is 76.3 GB with 11.9 GB used and 64.3 GB free.
Hi Emily :D

Your system looks in pretty good shape, I don't see anything bad on your log. A memory upgrade could speed it up a little. The entries that Panda found are most likely leftover entries in the registry. Here is a good registry cleaner. It will back it up so you can access it if there is a problem. It is a pretty safe program.

Reg Cleaner
http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/…-cleaner4.3.htm

You can also download and install the free version of Diskeeper. It is one of the best defraggers on the market and the free version is more that adequite.

Diskeeper Lite
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207

You can download this great little free program to see whats under the hood of your computer. Look under the memory section. it appears that you have 256mb of memory and doubleing it will make a big difference.

Belarc Advisor
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_desc…8,tk,hsx,00.asp

Then you can go here to price memory. This is the site that all the big guys like Dell, etc. buy from. I am a system builder and this is all I use. Just plug in your make and model and it will pull up what you need. It's not a big job, but you can take it to a shop to have it done.

You have a some choices to make as far as what to keep and so on, I can't make them for you. As far as Go Back, if you have your system nice and clean and secure, you may never need it. I have been running Win Xp Home for a couple of years and it includes System Restore and I never have had reason to use it.

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

*Run CCleaner, this is a very safe program that will clean out all the crapola on your system. It will also remove cookies,
so go to OPTIONS/ COOKIES and move the ones you want to keep from the left window to the right window.

* Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Now, while in SAFEMODE,

* click on START/ RUN, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This will open up the temp directory that your machine uses. GO TO EDIT/ SELECT ALL and delete all the contents of that folder.
* Do this for each user of your computer.
* Do this same process for%windir%\temp.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB, (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.
* If you want to use a free program, try this excellent one.
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

* Run SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY 1.4 > CHECK FOR UPDATES > IMMUNIZEand run a full system scan on a regular basis.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

* Run AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL/ CHECK FOR UPDATES and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN on a regular basis.
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910…page&tag;=button

* Download and run SPYWARE BLASTER,
* Check for updates and enable all protection. This program will just sit in the background and help keep all the bad guys out.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

* Download and install WINPATROL
* This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

* IE-SPYAD is a one time install, it will put 1000s of bad sites in your Internet Explorer Restricted Zone.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_down…23332&fileidx;=1

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER> GO TO PROPERTIES> AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Consider surfing the net with the FireFox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this for awhile, you will want to make it your default.
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

* There companion THUNDERBIRD MAIL program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,, this to has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.
http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

* Here is a free version of Zone Alarm This is an excellent firewall.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_desc…fid,7228,00.asp

* Be sure to reboot your system after each scan before you scan again with Spybot or Ad-Aware or whatever else you may use. Sometimes it takes a few scans and reboots before you get it all.

Good luck Emily, been nice helping you. I will keep this thread open for a couple of days in case you have any other questions.

Ken :D
Ken, thank you so much for all your help! I do have one question, though. Why did the Panda scan stop halfway through, give me the message about being unable to "fulfill the messaging request" and needing to set Microsoft Outlook as the default mail client, then tell me the scan was finished? Emily
Good Morning Emily,

I really don't know why it hung up like that. Maybe a small problem on your system. The more and more you use your system and programs are added and uninstalled, a lot of garbage kind of builds up. I have had posters on this board in the past that could not complete some of the scans and install programs on there systems due to one thing or another. Some times when a program is uninstalled it will take things with it that it shouldn't. Always use the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and never delete anything that you are unsure of. It could also have been a problem with there site or your internet connection. I don't see the connection between the scan and your mail client. Reboot and give it another try.

Here are 2 excellent Windows Tech Support sites that specialize in that sort of thing, like Tom Coyote, you have to join but there free.

Ken :D
Thanks again, Ken. I noticed this A.M. that the icon for AdAware on my computer had changed to look like the McAfee icon. I uninstalled AdAware and reinstalled it to get back the normal icon. Looks like I just need to work my way through the various suggestions you made last night. I will re-run the Panda scan afterwards. Emily
