Sure could use some help with removing this project1 virus or trojan .. whatever it is. My daughter believes she picked it up in a picture that was sent to her on messenger. When anybody logs on now a window pops up (at startup) looks like an xbox advert. but I open the task manager and it shows multiple instances of project1 running (which I can shut down). Here is my hyjackthis log.

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Please go to these free online file checkers:

Kaspersky Online File Scanner

Jotti Online File Scanner

VirusTotal Online File Scanner

And submit these files for a virus scan:

C:\Documents and Settings\cherie\My Documents\Cherie's Tunes\iTunesHelper.exe

c:\windows\xml2\win32.exe

Let me know what they say, and we'll proceed from that point.
:)
ok I checked both files @ jottis and virustotal –couldnt get into kaspersky ituneshelper.exe was ok at both sites win32.exe was ok @ jottis but at virustotal one of the 24 places it gets sent to showed ( new malware d.) the other 23 sites showed no virus. thanks in advance for the help and by the way I still have the project1 problem today even though i tried some things last night. (something else i should mention – my system restore was shut off for some reason) and I never shut it off.
Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from Spybot Search and Destroy
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from Lavasoft
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

Try this online virus scan:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let it remove any infections found.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log file into this thread, and an update on your "problem". :)
ok I did the adaware and the spybot.
my computer is running nicer (quicker and smoother)
I couldn't log onto trend micro housecall – server down maybe?
I still have the project1 trojan or virus .. whatever it is

I still have the project1 trojan or virus .. whatever it is

Can you post the "full path name" (example: "C:\Windows\Virus.exe") of the file your machine is complaining about?
I went to task manager to shut down the window that starts up every time we log on to the computer. The task mgr. shows 1or 2 (project1) apps. running, but if left to run for half a minute it multiplies until im shutting down 10 or more (project1) apps. I checked the process running project1 it shows all of them are run by explorer32.exe but one of them is run by win32.exe.
Click here to download Ewido security suite - it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

After the definitions have been updated, close Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Now, run Ewido, then:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin (do not open any folder's or open the windows control panel while the scan is in progress).
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report.txt file to your desktop.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log file, and the report.txt file from the Ewido scan, into this thread. :)
ok here are the reports you wanted…. and project is still with us  if you need to know.

Run Hijack This!.

Click on Open Misc Tools section

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

"Copy/paste" the startuplist log into this thread.

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

echo searching for explorer32 hidden > files.txt
dir c:\explorer32.* /ah /s >> files.txt
echo searching for explorer32 normal >> files.txt
dir c:\explorer32.* /s >> files.txt
echo searching for win32 hidden >> files.txt
dir c:\win32.* /ah /s >> files.txt
echo searching for win32 normal >> files.txt
dir c:\win32.* /s >> files.txt
echo searching for project hidden >> files.txt
dir c:\project*.* /ah /s >> files.txt
echo searching for project normal >> files.txt
dir c:\project*.* /s >> files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop.

Wait for a Notepad window to open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.

I'm still in the process of determining just exactly what we need to deal with, and where it's located on your machine.

I got these file names from this that you posted:

went to task manager to shut down the window that starts up every time we log on to the computer. The task mgr. shows 1or 2 (project1) apps. running, but if left to run for half a minute it multiplies until im shutting down 10 or more (project1) apps.
I checked the process running project1 it shows all of them are run by explorer32.exe but one of them is run by win32.exe.

If you know of anything else that would be useful in tracking down the "bad guys", please post it.
:)

Both of the files in question seem to be here:

Directory of c:\WINDOWS\xml2

19/08/2005 05:43 AM 20,480 explorer32.exe
1 File(s) 20,480 bytes

Directory of c:\WINDOWS\xml2

04/08/2005 02:44 PM 20,480 win32.exe
1 File(s) 20,480 bytes

Please submit this file to the online virus scans I posted earlier:

c:\WINDOWS\xml2\explorer32.exe

And let me know what they say.

Do you know what the files in the "c:\WINDOWS\xml2" folder are for?
ok I sent all 3 of the .exe files that were in XML2 to the virus scanners. In each case all except 1 showed no virus. The single occurance on one scanner web site said (possibe threat) and another said (suspicious) … but I have better news :) I checked what the xml2 folder had in it and ran the explorer32 app. that was in it… And guess what ..project1 started up :D I wont delete this folder until you get back to me but I dont see any other use for this folder and its 5 files, which are contents of xml32 explorer32 (program) show (textfile) and all thats on it is the word "no" spread (textfile) and all thats on it is the word "no" system32 (program) win32 (program) I await your response ,and like I said earlier "I'm ok for deleting the whole folder"
You're better than Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson put together!!!!

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [win32] c:\windows\xml2\win32.exe

Then click "Fix checked", and close Hijack This!

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete:

c:\windows\xml2 <– FOLDER

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Let me know if you had any errors, or if that folder reappears after you reboot.
(check to be sure!)
:)
