I obtained an msblank trojan and my Spybot S&D, nor Norton has cured my computer. I have downloaded Hijack This and am hoping for some help. Here's my info: (P.S. I promise to donate if this helps… :) )

Hi Sarah, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. I want you to know I am sure Tom can use your donation to run the site, but we are all volunteers :)
You do have a nasty one: http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojdloaderra.html that looks like this in your log:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\popcorn72.exe and is running here: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ControlPanel] C:\WINDOWS\system32\popcorn72.exe rundll.dll,LoadMouseProfile
There is also some adware that is slowing you down and surely not needed. I would like to give you a good cleaning that will take a little work but your computer will be happy..happy
If that sound like a plan to you, then do this:

Move HJT from the Desktop. Open your C:\ and right click a blank spot then make a new folder called HJT. Move the HJT.exe from the Desktop into that new folder. It will store logs and backups there safely. Thanks.

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

TeaTimer will block the HJT fix, use this information to turn it off until you are done:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ControlPanel] C:\WINDOWS\system32\popcorn72.exe rundll.dll,LoadMouseProfile
Troj/Dloader-RA

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\popcorn72.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msblank.html <<< if this file is there delete it

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

5) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Run a little before you post and let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

Hi Sarah, It's good to hear your computer is running better. I see Ewido found that bad stuff for you and removed it. Look at that log so you can see where bad cookies are hiding. Here are some ideas that may help:
http://www.linkgrinder.com/tutorials/10_Ea…rs_article.html
Now…I need to see a new HJT log to make sure everything bad is gone:

Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Run a little before you post and let us know how you are running.

Thanks…Phil

Also, this morning when I turned on my computer I had an error message that went like this: "Explorer. EXE Application Error" - "The instruction at "0x009d5716" referenced memory at "0x00a60004". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program. Click on CANCEL to debug the program." Not sure what I should do, I clicked on OK, then I got: "drwtsn 32.exe- Application Error" - "The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000409) occurred in the application at location 0x59a729d." Any thoughts? And, one more thing (sorry) -what does it mean when Windows Task Manager starts up when the PC is turned on?

Sorry for all the mumbo jumbo, but if you have any answers for me, I'd appreciate it. Thanks again.
Sarah
Hi Sarah, No problem about the HJT log, I certainly understand how one can get excited if they think their computer issues have been fixed. Several years ago, that is how I got started doing this. Someone fixed my problem and suggested I could learn more and help others free if I wanted.

First you have a new infection :( and it looks to me like this got on your computer in about an 11 hour period as you were clean when Ewido scanned and infected when HJT scanned this morning.

I sure hope you did not download this garbage on purpose. Here is what it looks like:
O2 - BHO: eBlocs SecurityToolbar - {68FF9E0F-2E96-4467-87FA-1A8B9734C7E7} - C:\Documents and Settings\Sarah\Local Settings\Application Data\ssstbar\sssTbar.dll
O3 - Toolbar: eBlocs SecurityToolbar - {68FF9E0F-2E96-4467-87FA-1A8B9734C7E7} - C:\Documents and Settings\Sarah\Local Settings\Application Data\ssstbar\sssTbar.dll
here is what it is: http://castlecops.com/clsid-1972.html more information: http://netrn.net/spywareblog/archives/2004…-status-update/
See this: SpyBlocs and eBlocs have been on the Suspect/Rogue Anti-Spyware list since it was first published on July 26, and with good reason. Comments on the page state: aggressive, deceptive advertising; false positives work as goad to purchase; poor scan reporting; Ad-aware knockoff; same app as SpyDoctor, Spyinator, SpyKiller 2004, & SpywareThis [A: 6-26-04 / U: 8-4-04
Read the whole article as this is a real piece of junk. Here is a list where you can check software before considering it: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1
O2 - BHO: eBlocs SecurityToolbar - {68FF9E0F-2E96-4467-87FA-1A8B9734C7E7} - C:\Documents and Settings\Sarah\Local Settings\Application Data\ssstbar\sssTbar.dll
O3 - Toolbar: eBlocs SecurityToolbar - {68FF9E0F-2E96-4467-87FA-1A8B9734C7E7} - C:\Documents and Settings\Sarah\Local Settings\Application Data\ssstbar\sssTbar.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Navigate to the item as you did before and delete it, this should do it:

C:\Documents and Settings\Sarah\Local Settings\Application Data\ssstbar\ >>> folder

Run CCleaner again, then post a new HJT log. Once that is done, please check your version of WeatherBug to make sure it is 6.0 or higher, versions prior to that contained adware. If your version is older than 6.0, delete it and download the newest version.

Here is some information for you to start reviewing so you can better protect yourself from these infestations:
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html

A little information about DrWatson:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=185837
http://www.computerhope.com/software/drwatson.htm

Once we make sure you are totally clean, then if the Doctor reports again, make sure you copy and paste the error message if possible, if it is exact, google will most often tell us what is causing it. Until this junk is gone, I won't know if it is the cause or not.

Thanks…Phil
Phil -
I tell ya… what next? I've removed Weather Bug. I had actually heard someone say before that it is dangerous to have on the computer. I don't think I had an updated version. Anyway, here's my new HJT log:

One more time Sarah:

Turn off TeaTimer: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Turn on TeaTimer

Please get into the information I gave you for advice for staying clean. Run the computer for a day or two, make sure you run your maintenance programs, then let me know how things are going. Post a last HJT log also.

Thanks…Phil

I am using my brother's computer at the moment. Mine will hardly ever let me into the TC forum - it just tells me the page cannot be displayed. Also, more often than not, when I start my computer, it begins Windows Task Manager and will not let me do anything else. I let it run for 2 hours this morning. Is this something that is necessary to run, and does it take a really, really long time to complete? One more thing - Norton and Ewido have told me, about 3 times since yesterday, that C:\WINDOWS/system32/hclean32.exe has been detected, and then Ewido will clean it out. I'm at a loss. Thanks.
Sarah
Hi Sarah, I can't see anything in the log? When Ewido detects the item does Ewido say it is re about this item: C:\WINDOWS/system32/hclean32.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/h….exe-11624.html
http://castlecops.com/s10544-hclean32_exe.html

Sarah, We have a couple of issues to deal with, this one: C:\WINDOWS/system32/hclean32.exe that you read about above, and here is more information about this:
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/WareOut.html

(for your information)
and we also have an issue with a domain hijacker: What to do:
If the domain is not from your ISP or company network, have HijackThis fix it. The same goes for the 'SearchList' entries.
For the 'NameServer' (DNS servers) entries, Google for the IP or IPs and it will be easy to see if they are good or bad.

Since you are being redirected and this link will show Yellowhammer fixing a similair issues with the same site (do not click links as the redirect is to porn, this is just so you can see the numbers: 69.50.176.158,85.255.112.8 are the same as the ones in your log.
http://www.castlecops.com/t131064-Unable_t…n_Websites.html
I will be candid, this infection is new to me. I am willing to work with you to fix it if you want, but it is a tough infection, here is a link where an expert was trying to remove it. I was in contact with miekiemoes who is doing a repair here: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=57367
and she said the repair would work for this infection. We also can try the manual fix here: http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/WareOut.html
I am still collecting information in the event there is something new that we can use. If you have questions, please let me know.

I believe we should try to get rid of the server hijacker first to see if that helps you to be able to use the computer as we try to remove the trojan. So…if you feel that we should move forward with this repair after all of the information I have shared, then let's do this:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Click "Start", "Control Panel", "Network connections". Rightclick on your default connection and click "Properties".
Doubleclick "Internet Protocol". Check "Obtain DNS server address automatically". Then click on OK.
Open HJTand run a scan to see if it has returned your default information and that the lines we removed above are gone. If this is the case, check to see if you can open websites now, post a new HJT log and let me know. If that works ok then we will go after the trojan. Thanks…Phil
I believe I have found a fix for you, try this:

Download and run Blacklite
F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
leave [X]scan through windows explorer checked,
click > Scan > Next, you will see items similar to the pictures we have attached below**:
HCLEAN32.EXE, csyew.exe, dmwlr.exe

Choose to let Blacklite rename them.
(Basically have it rename anything it detects except for wbemtest.exe.)
Do not rename "wbemtest.exe"
The tool will ask if you want to reboot (restart). Choose Yes..

** Note: csyew.exe and dmwlr.exe are (were) random named files.

After you have rebooted post back with a fresh HijackThis log please

The images did not transfer with the Code, just follow the directions carefully and hope it works. The alternative is a long process :(
Hi Phil, I'm posting from my brother's computer again - Before I try anything, should I do what both of your last posts recommend, or does the second nullify the first? I don't want to make any wrong moves… Thanks again, you have been great to help. Sarah
Hello Sarah, I found the fix for HCLEAN32.EXE a little later, but both items need to be fixed, I can't see that it will make a difference in which order you do them, just follow the directions carefully and let me know how it goes. I am hoping once you fix the dns issue you will be able to use the computer. There is no need to post two HJT logs, post one when you finish and we will see how it worked. Thanks…Phil
Hi Phil, I'm reading through some of the information you linked for me. I don't mean to be so ignorant, but… I was looking in my add/remove programs and see Safe Search Security Toolbar. I cannot find it when I search for it. Is this something that I need to remove? I will google it. Is this the ssstbar that I 'fixed' with HJT? I was not able to locate what you told me to delete: "C:\Documents and settings\Sarah\Local Settings\Application Data\ssstbar\>>> folder" — Is this what it is??If so, I'll remove it straight away. Thanks, Sarah
Yes Sarah, I am surprised it is in Add Remove programs. Uninstall it if it will let you. How goes it with the other instructions? I will be down for the night shortly, but will respond first thing in the morning EST. (Florida) Thanks…Phil :wavey:
