Hello Agustin, I am sorry for the wait, we are extremely busy :( I am not sure how it is effecting your mouse. If you still need help I will need to see a new HJT log because these infections change quickly. Before you post that log we need to address several issues.

1) You are Hijacked by New.net (if you downloaded this hijacker on purpose, let me know) It looks like this in your log: O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\program files\newdotnet\newdotnet6_38.dll' missing and can even cause you to have connection problems. The removal instructions are here: http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html as a backup if you should loose your ability to connect this tool should restore it: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm The tool can be put on a floppy for an emergency. You must not attempt to remove this with HJT.

2) Your HijackThis.exe is running from the Desktop. I would like you to run it from C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need instructions for doing that, this should help: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm If you insist on running it from the Desktop, please make sure it is in a folder where it can safely store logs and backups. Thanks.

3) HJT is outdated, please update to the current version 1.99.1. You can do that from within the program like this: Open HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Scroll to Check for update online > Follow instructions.

4) Once the above is completed, post a new log with Version 1.99.1 and I will review the new log as soon as possible.

Thanks…pskelley

Hello and thank you for what you have done, it appears you have not executed the instruction in #1 yet and the hijacker is still showing in the log: O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\program files\newdotnet\newdotnet6_38.dll' missing Follow the instructions in #1 and then we will be able to proceed. Thanks…Phil
I have noticed that you are running Msconfig in Selective Startup. I need to see the next log once you have removed the New.Net hijacker in Normal mode, with All Enabled in Msconfig. You may Enable All, then run a scan with HJT for the log, then return to Selective Startup without a reboot if you wish. Thanks..Phil
Dear Pskelley-, I will follow your instructions and execute all the processes you suggested and I will send you the new log ASAP, hopefully tonight. Anew, thanks so much for your help and your time. Regards, Agustin
One more thing: I have not remobed New.Net because I cannot find it in my computer. I tried removing it with Windows add/remove programs utility, but the hijacker s=did not show in the list of porgrams installed in my computer. I tried the seconf procedure, i.e., removing it form the hard disk, but again new.net did not show.
Dear Phil-,

Below you'll find the new log after turning msconfig to normal mode. As I mentioned to you, I have not been able to remove new.net because I cannot find in my hard drive. Please advice me on what to do.

Regards,

Agustin

Hello Agustin, Let's se if we can get rid of the New.Net hijacker first. Please try this, you can skip down to From a computer that has Internet access since you can't find it.

I suggest you remove NewDotNet unless you deliberately installed it. It is extremely dubious and commercially sponsored:

First, please open Add/Remove programs and uninstall New.Net or NewDotNet from there if listed. If it is not listed, follow these instructions:

· From a computer that has Internet access, click on the following link:
http://www.new.net/support/uninstall6_76.exe.
· Download and save uninstall6_76.exe to Local Disc C
· Click on Start.
· Click on Run.
· In the Open window type, C:\uninstall6_76.exe.
· Click on the OK button.
· After removal, you may be prompted to reboot. Please reboot if not prompted.

Once you have done this, check to see by running HJT if this line is gone:
O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\program files\newdotnet\newdotnet6_38.dll' missing

If the line is still there, then download and use this tool:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Once that New.Net 010 item is gone, then do this:

Microsoft AntiSpyware will block the changes, turn it off until you are finished with HJT, remember to turn your protection back on:
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Post a new log for a final look, Thanks…Phil

Please tell me what this is:
MOUSE TROUBLE: SPYWARE?, USM MOUSE BECOMES UNSTABLE

Are you talking about a USB mouse? Exactly what is this mouse doing. Does the mouse roll on a small ball? What is the name of the product? When was it last cleaned? How long have you had this mouse and have you checked to see if new drivers are available? Any other information you can think of that might help. Thanks
Phil-,

I did get rid of the new.net line using the uninstaller6_76. The log below was recorded immediately after the removal. What exactly was that program doing in my machine? I never installed the software in my disk.

Concerining the mouse: I use an optical USB mouse specially desigined for notebooks, which basically means that it is small. Beginning the week of the zotob and esbot virus attack, i.e., the week of August 15th, I began having problems with the mouse. I cannot control the pointer. When I am writing the pointing device moves most of the times to the start menu and randomly opens programs or folders. As I write this lines the pointer is on top of the start menu, and no matter what I do it returns to that position. When I am using MS-Word it tends to go to the upper right corner of the screen and, ocassionally, it closes the program. Most of the times when I want to use the mouse it simply does not respond. I have tto move the mouse up and down until I kinda recover control. Suspiciously, this tends to happens when I have to fill out a form over the internet, or when I am logging in to different websites.
This problem is seriously hurting my productivity, and is what motivated coming to TomCoyote for help in the first place.

Thanks so much for your time and help.

Agustin

Hi Agustin, Before I look at the log I will try to answer the question about what the program was doing on your machine. Believe it or not, this company contends that folks download it on purpose??? I have removed it many, many times and I have yet to find one of those folks. Now that it is gone, go back to the links I gave you when we started. There is a support link and phone number. Perhaps you can find where to express your happiness for this hijacker being placed on your computer?
In this link: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm you will see this information which may be what happened.

Common offenders include New.net* (NEWDOTNET) and WebHancer*, which are often bundled with file-sharing utilities, DVD player software, and other free downloads

. It is very important that you read all of the EULA agreement so you know what you are agreeing to when you click on "I accept" Many of the nasties, hard to remove junk like LOP come bundled that way. So it will probably turn out that you accepted the New.Net installation and that will mean they did nothing illegal. I believe the real culprint is the manufacturer of the software who allows New.Net to bundle with their software, rather it be paid or free, then hide it in a bunch of legal wording most folks can't understand anyway. Here are some faq's http://www.new.net/help_faq.tp
I hope this helps you to understand the care you must take when accepting a EULA agreement.

Now to the mouse, please understand that what we do at this forum is remove malware: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware Given the name of the software I might have found a link where you could troubleshoot your isses. Now knowing who manufactured your optical USB mouse there is little I can do there because there are many. Just off the top of my head I would think that uninstalling and reinstalling the software may fix the problem? Make sure you read the EULA agreement, this would be the kind of software that would bundle New.Net with it and you don't want to reinstall that hijacker. The next thing I would suggest would be to look in the paperwork from the product, locate a toll free number and call for support. You may need to update the drivers? If you bought it at a office supply store, take it back to them and ask the computer tech support if they can help. Simply unplugging it from the USB port doing a reboot then plugging it in may help?

Last I will say your HJT log is clean and here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

HJT cannot see everything on your computer. If you want me to initiate scans to look for malware that may be hiding on your computer, I will be glad to do so, just let me know. If the only issue is the mouse, then it is probably a mouse problem. Here is a Google link to where you may find information to help you troubleshoot this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=troub…G=Google+Search You could also post here: http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showforum=83 One of the fine folks who keeps an eye on that forum may know more about a USB optical mouse than I do. Thanks…Phil

If you are reading this information…thank a teacher, If you are reading it in English…thank a soldier.
On the contrary, thanks to you!! You have been extremely helpful. To tell you the truth it makes me optimistic to know that there are people like you helping others like myself in the middle of a sea of corporate and individual computer evil doers. Going back to the mouse problem. It is not a hardware problem because I have tried the same mouse on a different computer and it works perfectly. I have also tried a different optical mouse in my computer and it behaves in the same way I described in my prior posting. It is not a software problem since it is a plug and play device. I simply plugged it in and Windows installed the driver automatically. If you are willing to do a full scan of my computer please let me know what to do. Also let me know anything I can do to help you guys do your work. Thanks anew!! Agustin
OK Sir, let's see what we can find out. First let me say you are very welcome and your kind words are what I work for. The sooner more folks come to the realization that the very large majority of the issues on their computers is about the $$ and get on the arse's of their elected officials to put harse laws in place to punish both the corporate sponsors and their henchmen the better off we all will be. This is nothing more than B&E. I will also mention that free schools are available at several forums if you have an interest in helping, or even learning more just to keep your own computer clean. Let me know if you have an interest.

Let's proceed like this:
1) Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and may fix things. You will need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.
Let me know if that helps.

2) 1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list…" Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

3) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

4) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

5) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

6) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results and the Add\Remove programs list in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

Thanks…pskelley

Dear Phil-,

I completed the tests you suggested. It took me some time but I did everything you said. Despite having done the sfc /sacnnow, I still get a message saying that C:\$MFT is corrupt and unreadable. Below you will find the HJT log, as well as the unistall list and the ewido scan log. Thanks anew!!
