Please Help! I've done all I can think of!

McAfee found a virus "NewMalware!bot", attached to my "msupdate.exe" file, that won't clean, delete, or quarantine. I have tried everything I can think of, and just about everything suggested in McAfee's online instructions that I understood how to do, and was sure would not totally crash my system. I don't know what else to do now. Today I have now downloaded "Spyware Blaster" and "TomCoyote". I will attach my TC log to this file. Hopefully you can help me out. PLEASE. I am stuck, I don't know what else to do!!!

That program ("msupdate.exe") may have made serious changes to your registry.

To check for that, please do this:

Run Hijack This!.

Click on Open Misc Tools section

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

"Copy/paste" the startuplist log into this thread, and wait for my reply.

DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE ANYTHING!!!

If this program is what I think it is, it needs to be removed cautiously, or serious system problems will arise.

Not sure how to "add this into the thread". Sorry, I'm partially computer illiterate / partially knowledgable. But I did finally figure out how to get the info that you wanted….(see I AM partially knowledgeable)..and here it is…hope it helps!!!!

Trend-Micro Housecall

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let it remove any infections found.

Reboot afterwards, and "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log file into this thread. :)

I ran House call, but it didn't seem to be finding anything, (I guess it was). I messed up a little bit and missed the messages at the end (sorry). Then I ran McAfee, just to be sure, and it found "nothing at all"!!!!!

Then, this evening, when I got home, just to be sure again (do I sound a bit hestitant to believe?), I ran House call again…..and it found nothing!!!! YEAH!!! :weee:

OK….now for the bad news…..(I'm so sorry!!!)….here's where I REALLY screwed up! While I was waiting to hear from ANYBODY on this forum…..not having ever used a forum before, not knowing if ANYONE would answer….I continued to work on the problem. In searching through some McAfee forums, they had some people that had the same virus on other files, and had suggested them to use "House call" or "Panda" virus scanners to check their systems. I don't know why, I opted for Panda….however it was a download…..then my system started freezing up and acting weird. Meanwhile, you answered my plea, and asked for more info…..which I thought was a godsend….when you said I had a "Blaster worm" I figured you had discovered what had happened "in between" my two logs.
But when I looked at where you had seen it, it was on the first log. ANYWAY!!!…My system kept running like carp**….and this software had little reminder windows, and warning windows that pop up every 2 seconds that are driving me nuts!!!…..and now it won't let me uninstall it. I go into "add or remove programs" and go to that program and click on "change or remove" and get the hourglass for a couple of seconds, then the hourglass disappears. I thought of restoring my system back a week or so, but then I figured my virus would be back, and I have that problem all over again. I have written to the Panda developers, asking them what to do, and am waiting for a response from them. Until then, I am just frustrated. Anyway…..sorry, I screwed up on this one….just when I got rid of the other problem!!!

Push these three keys at the same time:



The task manager will appear on the screen.

Click on the Processes tab, then click on Image name to sort them alphabetically.

In the list of processes on msblast.exe and choose End process.

Close the task manager.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

Micah….thanks for the quick response. I was just doing some research on the internet on this virus, and it does explain why I haven't been able to download my windows updates for quite sometime. But my concern is why didn't any of the virus scans catch this virus…..especially since it is such a commonly known virus. Any ideas? My McAfee is up to date, thru 08/17/05. So, I don't know why it didn't catch it. House call didn't catch it either. I am working on your request, but meanwhile, I would appreciate your input on this. Thank you. Joy2All :unsure:

Micah…..I just wanteed to let you know what's happening this morning. I am trying to follow your instructions, on what you want me to do, however I ran into a problem. I opened Windows task manager, clicked on the Processes tab, clicked on Images name, and scrolled down, however msblast.exe was not on the list. Maybe this explains why the virus scans were not finding it. However, what should I do now??? Please let me know. Thanks, Joy2All :o

Just skip the "task manager parts", and start where it says:

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Did you notice that "msupdate.exe" isn't on the list of programs any more?
(This is a GOOD thing!)

Micah….Ok, I completed the next part of the instructions as best I could….I wasn't sure how to find the files that said "no file" or "file missing". I searched for the msblast.exe file, but didn't find it either, I was able to find a couple of stray treezy files, and deleted those. It's not recommended to run two antivirus products at the same time.

You have Panda and McAfee going.

You said that you had tried to uninstall Panda, but nothing happened.

Are you still "leaning" in that direction, and if so, where do you stand? :unsure:

I wasn't sure how to find the files that said "no file" or "file missing".

The only file I asked to be removed was "msblast.exe".

I apologize if my instructions in that area were unclear.

If you have removed others, it might behoove you to retrieve them from the recycle bin if possible.

Micah….I am still trying to get Panda off of my system. I have heard nothing else from the manufacturer, so I will try to contact them again. Meanwhile, I already emptied my recycle bin (next time I will wait), but I am pretty confident on the files I deleted. They were just strays from "Treezy". An old piece of software that I uninstalled a long time ago, but it seems to have left behind a few pieces. Just as has "WildTangent", another piece of software that I was reading about yesterday, that has left behind a bunch of carp** on my system. I was reading yesterday, how to get rid of it. Another thing to work on. Anyway, do you want to know when / if I ever get Panda off of my system? Do you have any ideas how to do that? Also….did you ever figure out why msblast.exe didn't show up on any of my virus scans?????? Should I ask McAfee???

The log looks good! :thumbup: Is there a Panda Icon in your system tray you can click on, and choose "exit" (or some other way to "turn Panda off)", then try to uninstall it? :unsure: If it won't "uninstall" by itself, about the best we can do is "deactivate" all the "running" parts of it, and remove all registry entries. Does your Panda documentation suggest anything to try in circumstances like this? :)

OK….i was able to deactivate the icon, one thing i did earlier was i uninstalled McAfee Antivirus, so the 2 wouldn't be "challenging" each other. Then I tried to uninstall Panda, but it still wouldn't budge. Now that I have deactivated it, I will try again. I don't know about the "documentation". You have me stumped there. ????? Where would I look. Let me go try to uninstall it now that it is deactivated, and I will be right back……thanks again, joy2all
