My Dad's laptop is infested with adware. He downloaded Spy Spotter, which added to the problem, and who knows what else. Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Norton Anti-virus (run in safe mode) find and seem to remove numerous adwares, mostly EliteBar or Ezula. They just keep coming back.
Here's his HijackThis log:

Hi daedelus242, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. I don't see this stuff in HJT except for some search redirects from Hp which we will take care of a little later. If you still need help please do this in the posted order. You say you have Ad-aware, please use the link I will provide to make sure it is version 1.06 and configured as in the link. This is of course a bad product, SpySpotter: Rouge Product: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

I am briefly going to give you the plan, we will download these programs, then we will restart the computer to safe mode to run them. You will want to print or save the instructions to the Desktop so you can view them in safe mode.

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions: http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair. Wait until I tell you to run them.

3) Ewido scan: Download, update and prepare Ewido, wait until I till you to run it.
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Please download miekiemoes' LQfix batch here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/LQfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

5) Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

___________________________________________________________________

Run Spybot first, then Ad-aware.

Run Ewido, remove or quarantine anything it locates unless you are sure it is valid. I will see the item in the log and instruct you later.

Run LQfix.bat. This will happen quickly and will remove the EliteBar if it is still present.

Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have.
We will have more to do with HJT.

Once those two logs are posted, please do this in normal mode.

Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list…" Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply. The same thread please.

Thanks…pskelley

Hi pskelley, Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I was able to resolve the adware issues myself – I was under time pressure to get it done otherwise I would have waited for your analysis and instructions. I think I'd already cleaned out most of the problem before I ran the HJT. Thanks again. daedelus242
Hey that's no problem, thanks for keeping me informed. Still print or save the information in case you ever need it. If you will let me look at another HJT log I will check to make sure it is clean, and remove the Overture search junk that was in the last log and give you some great ideas to help you stay safe and clean. Thanks…Phil :)
