Hi,

My pc is doing some strange things :

Wont let me access msn messenger, comes up with the "windows has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Norton antivirus is saying it doesnt support the repair feature when it starts up.

I cant turn on windows updates.

I cant access 'add/remove programs' in control panel.

Hello and Welcome to TomCoyote forum. I am not sure how it is effecting your programs but you do have some junk that needs to go. Please follow these instructions:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

Look in Add Remove programs for Media Gateway, uninstall it if there. Open Task Manager then the Processes tab. Locate and end process on: C:\Program Files\Media Gateway\MediaGateway.exe if there.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Media Gateway\ >>> folder

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:

5) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Tell us how you are running now.

Hi been away for a few days.

Ok ive done all you said but doesntseem to have made a difference.

Still cant get into add/remove programs but I managed to uninstall norton antivirus and msn messenger using ccleaner but made no difference to msn messenger saying "problem needs to close".

Also each window I open in xp is black on the left hand side instead of blue..

I apologize, I did not get my notification when you posted. I discovered this when I was checking open thread. If you have resolved your issues let me know, otherwise I will continue trying to help. Please post only logs I request.

1) This is a rouge spyware product: C:\Program Files\3B Software\Spyware Protection Pro\SpywareProtectionPro.exe see this: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
false positives work as goad to purchase; earlier versions were same app as #1 Spyware Killer, Max Privacy Protector, SpyDoctor, SpyFirewall, Spyinator, SpyKiller 2005, SpyLax, SpySpotter; & SpywareThis; Ad-aware knockoff [A: 12-14-04 / U: 8-14-05]
Use Add Remove programs to uninstall it.

2) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list…" Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply

3) Open Ewido and check for updates, then use these instructions to enter safe mode: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html Run the Ewido scan in safe mode, be sure to save the scan report.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

Reboot to normal mode, post the HJT log, the Ewido scan results and the installed program list requested in instruction #2.

Still cant get into add/remove programs but I managed to uninstall norton antivirus and msn messenger using ccleaner but made no difference to msn messenger saying "problem needs to close".

Not sure about what you are saying here. Were you able to uninstall and reinstall msnim? Did you install the newest version of msnim 7.0? If not try installing it over the old version to see if that helps.
