Navigate to this file:

C:\windows\system32\wininet.dll

Put your cursor on it. It will display a "File version" number in the "bubble" that pops up. Please post that number.

Should be something like 6.0.2800.1505

If it's infected and can't be cleaned, we'll have to replace it.
:)
wininet.dll version 6.0.2737.800 i have found an older version 2 replace with but no such luck atm. ill get a newer version and try that.
I'll bet you have a "clean", same version already on your machine.

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

dir c:\wininet.dll /s > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop.

Wait for a Notepad window to open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.

Then you can delete the files.txt file, and the ff.bat file from your desktop.

This will help us find the "clean" one I believe you already have.
:)
sorry i was away for a couple of days, heres the resultinfg text file ; Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 351A-16E5 Directory of c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 08/01/2004 02:23 585,216 wininet.dll 1 File(s) 585,216 bytes Directory of c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dllcache 08/01/2004 02:23 585,216 WININET.DLL 1 File(s) 585,216 bytes Directory of c:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\16b2c96a0c41f4dfdb4d3cc228a4f819 04/08/2004 05:56 656,384 wininet.dll 1 File(s) 656,384 bytes
Here's the infected one:

Directory of c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

08/01/2004 02:23 585,216 wininet.dll
1 File(s) 585,216 bytes

Here's one I want you to check the "version" of to be certain it matches the "version" of the infected one, and also scan with McAfee to be sure it's "clean":

Directory of c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dllcache

08/01/2004 02:23 585,216 WININET.DLL
1 File(s) 585,216 bytes

Let me know your findings:

1. Are they the same version?

2. Is the one "clean"?

:)
Yep they sure are the same version, mcaffee scans without detecting it as a virus. is there an easy way to replace this file with out having to do it from a boot disk? i tried in safe mode but it didnt wannt to let me.
Please try this:
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32 folder.
  • Find wininet.dll and rename it to wininet.dl
  • Wait a few moments. A new, clean version of wininet.dll should appear
  • Reboot the system and disinfect or delete the infected wininet.dl file
Let me know how things go.
:)
it pops up a message saying "cannot rename wininet: Access is denied Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use"
ok, deleted it finally :) still showing signs of a virus though, i carnt access my desktop settings (tabs are missing) and msn continually pops up on boot.
