 I just want to make sure my computor is clean. SpyDoctor said I might have infection. I down loaded ad-ware, spy-bot and pest patrol. All of them say I'm clean. Can someone take a look and tell me if I'm O.K. No problems I can see yet on the computor.

Hi Liz, Let me look over your HJT log first, then I will answer your question about your home page.

Scan saved at 9:29:00 AM, on 9/3/2005: First there is some junk that needs to go, but I see nothing BAD, we will clean up with HJT. I can run a scan that will reqire time but if all is running well after a cleanup of the HJT log we may not need to. I will also give you some suggestions by experts in the security field that will help keep you clean and safe online. Before we start, I notice you are running the Zone Alarm firewall which is a good firewall that I use myself, but WindowsXp has a built in firewall and they both should not be on at the same time, so let's check that. Click on START, Control Panel then Security Center. In your case the top item concerning the firewall should be OFF, the other two should be ON.

1) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the cleanup. The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
(this restriction can be removed if youdo not want it)
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log. Include any information you think I should have.

Thanks…Phil

Now let's look at your home page issue. Open IE, then on the address line that will be saying msn.com if Microsoft's home page is on the monitor. Remove (delete) the msn.com and carefully type the address you want to be your home page. Then click go. If you typed it correctly IE will open the page you want as your home page. Once it is there, then at the top of the browser choose Tools, then Internet Options, then make sure you are on the General tab. In the Home Page box, click on the use current button. That will set your home page to the one you selected that is currently on the monitor. Do not do this until you have finished removing the junk with HJT as some of that junk might be interferring. Let me know how this goes.
Then give me that new HJT log for a final look and include questions if you have them and I'll do my best to answer them.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks all.
I allready had adware 1.06 and spybot 1.04 and I had stumpled onto that set-up page before so I had them configured like that already. I ran them like you said, then I did a hijack this scan and fixed all you listed. I ran CCleaner but I already have 2 registry repair tools. System mechanic 5 and WinASO registry optimizer. So I really do not think I need to keep the third one. I did not change anything in IE yet like you said so here is my next hijackthis log. Oh, I almost forgot I did have the tea timer running before but I turned it off because anytime there was a change to the registry the pop-up would come but there were no buttons on the bottom. So I could not except or deny the change.

Hi, Let me comment briefly on your feedback and thanks for it, communication is the key to our success. If I don't mention something it means I agree with you and what you did.

I ran CCleaner but I already have 2 registry repair tools.

I believe CCleaner may be the very best available right now. Use it to clean in the other areas, Windows and Applications and use your cleaner for the registry. See if that works. Do not set CCleaner to run except when you start it manually and it will save you much more than the room it needs.

I did not change anything in IE yet

If you are talking about setting the home page you can do that when you wish, I believe I have made the intructions easy to understand.

Oh, I almost forgot I did have the tea timer running before but I turned it off because anytime there was a change to the registry the pop-up would come but there were no buttons on the bottom. So I could not except or deny the change.

I have the TeaTimer message in my canned messages because if it activated the changes in HJT can't be made. In your case, you have SpywareGuard which does the same thing as TeaTimer, so you do not need TT. Without looking at the log, if you do not have SpywareBlaster from the same place as SpywareGuard, you should have.

Your HJT Log: Scan saved at 5:48:17 PM, on 9/4/2005 A little more work to do.
It's possible SpywareGuard or another program is stopping the removal. These items are clutter and doing you no harm except using space on your disk. Turn off SpywareGuard by Right clicking the icon in the system tray then clicking on Exit. Use HJT to remove the lines, then reboot and SG will be put back.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

You will have a clean HJT log at that point so I will give you this information now: Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
