Hello DeadKings;

You may have forgotten about installing "Alcohol 120%" of which "StarWindService" is a part. It is not necessary and can be terminated, if you wish. It will be found, and can be Uninstalled, in Add/Remove Programs.

Description:
StarWindService.exe is a process which belongs to Alcohol 120% and provides network drive sharing capabilities to this product. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Before we start I notice you have Spybots TeaTimer running, Tea Timer will do it's job and will resist any changes we try to make to your system so just for now could you disable it. When we have finished the fix then re-enable it.

Open Spybot, go to Mode > Advanced. Then click on Tools. In the menu on the left hand side you will see Resident, click that and then untick 'Resident "Teatimer" (Protection of over all system settings) active.
Remember to reverse the procedure and turn in back on, after finishing.

Please print out these instructions so you can read them while you clean your system. A printout also makes a good check list for Hijack This, to avoid making errors.

Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =
http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page =
http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) =
http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
O2 - BHO: IDMIEHlprObj Class - {0055C089-8582-441B-A0BF-17B458C2A3A8} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B5D4581D-ED6A-4905-A267-25BAF7BE79C1} - (no file)

The following are OPTIONAL FIXES. If you know and trust the following, then keep them. If not, then fix with Hijack This and delete the Folder/File. Please note that these must also be Uninstalled in Add/Remove programs, if you so wish.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Folder View] "C:\Program Files\Folder View\folderview.exe"
O4 - Global Startup: PC Alert III.lnk = C:\Program Files\MSI\PC Alert III\alert.exe

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders in DARK, and delete them (if they are present):

Only if you have also removed these with Hijack This. Please note, they must also be Uninstalled/Removed in ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.

C:\Program Files\MSI
C:\Program Files\Folder View

Then, please reboot and reverse the Hide protected operating system files.

Next: This is very important and will make reading your log much easier.
Before making your next post,

Please go to Start - Run… and type
notepad.exe

Hit OK.

Now go to Format and uncheck WordWrap.

Close Notepad.

Now make a new HijackThis log and post it here, in this string.
Please use the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.
:P Thanks for your help. I know both folderview.exe and MSI PCalert Although I trust nothing. So if they may be a threat I will remove both. Folderview is just a lil prog that sits in my tray providing me instant access to Folder and Dirs that I have chosen to add to it. PC alert is a motherboard monitering app that came with my mobo..moniters temps voltages fan speed and the like.I like pcalert alot so I hope its no problem. StarWindServices is not located in my add/remove progs so that is still there . I have done what you've asked and here is my newest log. As long as I have your attention I've enabled all my start-up progs that I disabled so there should be some new entry's. I personally don't like things that phone home on their own. I would rather call when I feel like it :P once again thanks for the help

Hi DeadKings;

You're welcome and thanks a bunch for the input. It helps considerably when communication goes both ways. I know what you mean about Programs that "phone home". I like them almost as much as spam.

Since StarWindServices is only one part of a Program (Alcohol 120%), it is likely only the Program itself would be listed in Add/Remove Programs. However, if you only want to stop StarWindServices from running, "possibly" it may be found in Task Manager and can be disabled there.
To be permanantly rid of it, the entire Program, (Alcohol 120%) would have to be Uninstalled, in Add Remove Programs.

I do not see anything in your log that should cause any problems and I'm sure you have those little ETs "phone home" habits well under control.

You had no Virus or Trojan activity, so setting a new restore point is not critical. However, if you want to clear up all those old restore points and begin anew with a sparkling clean one……….
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
