changes after trojan ... am I clean?

Running XP home 2002 SP2 with current Zonealarm, Spybot, Ad-aware, Norton AV.

Recently while on internet NAV gave “Trojan .. access denied…unable to delete, repair, etc”. Disconnected from internet. Log showed Download.Trojan in the Temporary Internet Files, so deleted everything in there.

Have not been on internet since, but started to notice various little changes. In particular, started getting Security Centre alerts during bootup “Auto updates turned off - Norton antivirus off" …… the message would then change, a few seconds later, to “Auto updates turned off - Norton antivirus not updated”. OK, but PC NEVER gave this message before trojan.

Ran NAV - clean, then Spybot and Ad-aware and got rid of a few bits and pieces between them.

Then did a system restore to just before “Trojan” message. This got me back to the “normal” situation of not seeing any security centre alerts during bootup (even though my autoupdate was still off and NAV not updated).

Ran NAV in safe mode - clean. Spybot had 3 new "security risks" (I have not been on internet since trojan got in, but many of my floppies have webpages saved for reading later).

Today I notice the Security Centre alerts have returned during bootup.

OK, so alert messages are a GOOD thing, as are auto-updates, but….

…… why these changes after it all looks clean?????
……. and is there something worse inside that I can't see????

Thanks, really, for your help.

The Beachcomber
(PS: how much of that junk below can I get rid of ….. it looks like a lot of clutter)

Hi Deparker, Went well. Stages were: De-install - various registry changes flagged, which I guessed made sense. Download – couple of programs trying to get access to net thru’ firewall, but nothing seemed unusual (to me) Adaware – 4 tracking cookies, all removed easy. Rebooted Spybot – 5 DSO expoits…………………… DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, fixed) HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3 DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, fixed) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3 DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, fixed) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3 DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, fixed) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2796188823-23436979-2785278728-1006\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3 DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, fixed) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3 Zero on re-scan. I have the full spybot results if you want them. How do we stand? thanks & cheers, beachcomber
Ok, no problems there. Let's try a trojan scan. Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Run the scan and allow it fix what it finds. Please post the log for me to review.
report showed c:\Programmi\Toshiba Connect\InterDialer.exe -> Heuristic.Win32.Dialer I think this is a false positive. There is a little phone icon on the desk top, titled "toshiba connect", which links to this file. When you click on it a login popup comes up, but it doesn't do anything, (no details in the fields) and it is not the popup i use to log on thru'. file details are: created 31.8.2004 modified 22.5.2003 ult access 25.8.2005 but this does NOT make sense …. created AFTER being modified, and accessed today when I've never used it??? If I do clear it, is it easy to get back? thanks beachcomber
Yeah, let's not worry about that one. One more scan. Please download the free MWAV antivirus tool from here. Save it to the desktop and run it. Follow the prompts to scan your system for viruses. Then please post for me the log of infected files from the BOTTOM panel of the scan window. Please remove any lines relating to "Invalid object" as they are not needed at this time.
Took near 1.5 hours!!!…. lots of "invalid objects", and these………… Object "RedV Spyware/Adware" found in File System! Action Taken: No Action Taken. Object "AdvSearch Spyware/Adware" found in File System! Action Taken: No Action Taken. File C:\Programmi\Toshiba Connect\InstID.exe tagged as "not-a-virus:Dialer.Win32.InterDialer.a". Action Taken: No Action Taken. File C:\Programmi\Toshiba Connect\InstID.exe tagged as "not-a-virus:Dialer.Win32.InterDialer.a". Action Taken: No Action Taken. thanks, daparker, what's next????
PC seems OK, the odd hiccup, but within normal “windows” limits I'd say. I’m still thinking about those original "auto-changes" which I had in the first place. They were…. 1. after deleting the trojan I suddenly started getting Security Centre alerts during bootup 2. so I did a system restore, which got me back to the “pre-Trojan” situation of not seeing any security centre alerts during bootup (even though my autoupdate was still off and NAV not updated) 3. then Security Centre alerts returned during bootup. Even though security centre alerts are great, I don’t like things which turn themselves on for no good reason. Maybe do another system restore and see if it does the same thing again???????
Exact text, no, as my windows isn’t in English, but it is just the normal “balloon” message which appears from the Windows Security center icon on the toolbar during pc bootup. Rough translating…. Your computer might be exposed to risks Automatic updates is deactivated. Norton anti virus is deactivated. Click on this reminder to resolve the problem The “norton” line then disappears very late in bootup. Never got these messages before trojan, got it after, then eliminated it by a system restore, then it returned. Obviously I can just turn the autoupdates back on but ………. why did they come back AFTER the system restore??? Worth trying another system restore??? And why does Norton open so late in the boot process. thanks heaps!
Well, I am not sure why it is doing that, but based on the scans we have done, your system is pretty clean. You might try re-installing Norton to see if that helps.
