We are sorry for the delay in replying to you.

If you still require help, please Move HijackThis to Permanent Folder:
HijackThis needs to be placed into a permanent folder as it creates backups of everything fixed and you won't want these on your desktop.
  • Go to Start > My Computer > and double click on C:.
  • Now right click an open area and click New > folder and change the folder name to HJT.
  • Move HijackThis from the desktop into this new folder.
Post a fresh Hijackthis log as a reply to this thread.

I'll receive an e-mail notification of your reply and will respond as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience.

Hello DaddyG and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
Disable the offending Service
  • Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
  • Scroll down to distributed.net client and right click on it.
  • Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
Delete the offending Service
  • Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
  • In the Delete window, type dnetc and press OK.
  • OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.
Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\windows\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O1 - Hosts: 172.24.199.105 scogw
<< fix if you did not add this entry to your HOSTS file.
O13 - WWW. Prefix: http://

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE\OSA9.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Thanks for that. That was for my Dad's computer but I'd like to post my HJT log as well. I've put it here but if you need me to post it seperately could you please let me know?

Cheers

Graeme

I'm leaving for work right now so I'll check over your log when I get home. :) I still need to see a HijackThis log from your dad's computer so I can be sure it is clean now. If it is, I'll give some recommendations to help keep it clean.
I've just sent him what you sent me so he can have a go himself. I'm going over tomorrow so if he hasn't already made changes I'll do it and then send you a fresh log.
This is for your computer now:

I would like to get a copy of two files from you that are not in our databases. I'll send them to the experts to determine if they are good or not.

Please locate the following files. Zip them up and send them to me here. Be sure to include a link to this thread in the email. Use the subject line of Tom Coyote DaddyG.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ietoolbar.dll
C:\WINDOWS\GreasyPalmUpdate.exe

If you do not have a zip program you can get a free one from here.

Also let me know if you installed the GreasyPalm toolbar.
This is the from my Dad's computer after all the changes that you suggested were made.

I've sent the ietoolbar.dll file to one of the Experts for analysis. I would still like a copy of C:\WINDOWS\GreasyPalmUpdate.exe if you would please.

Your Dad's log appears clean now. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you download these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "So how did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Just received word from the Expert that the ietoolbar.dll file is not bad. It just uses the same CLSID and file name as a bad file does.

The ietoolbar.dll is the only file that came through in the zip folder. I would like to get a copy of the other if you could please.

There appears to be no infections showing in your log. Are you having any problem with your computer?
No I'm not but I thought it best to check. I use CWShredder, AVG Free, Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware, and HJT regularly and keep them updated but I've had the odd thing slip through in the past so I thought whilst I'm checking my Dad's PC out I might as well get mine checked. I've emailed you the greasypalm file again.
Thank you for the other file. I'll send it to the Experts so it can be added to our databases. If everything is working well on both computers than I will go ahead and lock this topic.
Did I have not have anything I needed taken off my computer? If not go ahead and lock this topic. Thank you again for your help. My Dad and I are extremely grateful, as I'm sure are all the users of this forum.
