Hello clarejoanne and welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you are not being helped elsewhere, then let's try this:

1) Looks like you had to use VUNDOFIX, would you please return to the C:\ and right click on a blank spot then make a new folder called HJT. Move the HijackThis.exe into it's own safe folder so we don't get mixed up with vundo. It will now look like this C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe Thanks.

2) Please confirm this is a valid program: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OPTMOUSE.EXE first time I have seen it and Google knows little also.

3) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

4) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

One of the 09 items is a direct link to porn, the others do not identify. You can leave what of the 09's on your computer.

icannews: hostile ActiveX
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

7) Also run at least on of these free online scans, set them to clean or remove anything they locate:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

8) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure your do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks for your reply. I will get started on these repairs later. Don't know where the porn site came from!!! Optmouse is my mouse software. Its an optical wheel mouse. I tried vundo because I was desperate! Thanks again. I will post back later.
Hello clarejoanne, Thanks for that information, I thought it was a mouse, just wanted to be sure, Google did not have much information. These lowlifes that write this junk call stuff anything they want to confuse users. A case in point is Adware-Virtumundo see what it is called:
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\tasktapi.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: tasktapi - C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\tasktapi.dll
That is a Virtumundo infection, looks legit enough huh? So you will know the tool vundofix will only work on this infection (sometimes does not but we have other manual fixes) and if you do not see O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object and O20 - Winlogon Notify: both you don't have the infection. The rest of the information is always random, but that much is always the same.
Now for the porn plug in, I just wanted to make you aware it was there in case kids are in the house. No one had to download the item, it often comes via what is called a "drive by shooting". Someone goes to a bad site by accident and they pop you before you can get away. I have heard that just a mouse over certain banners can get you an infection. You just need to tighten you ActiveX controls, and I will give you information to help you do that as soon as you are cleaned up. Here is a little information about this subject for you:
http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,…i887624,00.html

I will be notified when you post and get back with a response as soon as possible…Phil :wavey:
Hi
Spent all blooming day doing this. Got loads of crashes, reboots and nearly had to have a lie down! In the end I managed to get a squared software to run, and deleted a huge load of look2me adware. The online scans made the computer seize up. Anyway, going to go back and do a trojan scan now, but here is my hijack log for now. Many thanks for your help.

Hello clarejoanne, I am sorry it was so hard to remove :( it is always harder to get off then it is to get on. This item in you new log:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - (no file) is Spybot Search and Destroy: http://castlecops.com/tk304-SDhelper_dll.html I am not sure what happened there, but you should put that back on the computer when time permits and run in weekly to look for anything that might get in. All three programs Ad-aware, Spybot and CCleaner are free and you should keep and use them.

Besides that this new log looks clean, how is the computer running? There was no evidence of Look2Me in the first log. There is a version of L2m that does not show at all in the log, this is how it is described:

NONE. No identifying lines in HijackThis. You just have to 'smell it', unfortunately. If the user is on Windows 98/ME, and shows hijacking R1/R0 entries, and/or complains of popups, with nothing else apparent in the log, this is probably your culprit.

If you believe you may not have removed it all, here is the fix that was created for it by: Swandog’s Fix for New L2M On Win9X, ZERO Signs In HijackThis Log. Additional information at the site of this tool, Castle Cops indicates this:
Panda ActiveScan ( http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan…-PR-AS-107 ) will show some of the files as "Infected / Look2Me", although they will not clean or delete them correctly.
Here is that fix for Look2Me if you need it:
____________________________________________________________________

Please download L2m9xfix here:

http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?sho…050804120705301

Save it to the desktop and run it. Extract the files, and then open the l2m9xfix folder you just created and run RunThis.bat.

A window will open, and your desktop will disappear, then reappear. Please be patient until the batch says it is completed.

Then please restart your computer, and post a new HijackThis log as well as the entire text of the log.txt file which should be in the same folder as RunThis.bat.

_____________________________________________________________________
I also suggest you look over the 016 Downloaded program files and use HJT to remove any you do not know or no longer use. They will be put back if you ever visit the site again. I want to give you this information to review when time permits. The info might help you avoid future infections: Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

Let me know how you are doing when time permits. I wish to make sure you are running as good as Windows98 will run before turning you loose. Thanks…Phil
Here are the two logfiles. Don't think the L2 fix thing found anything wrong.

I deleted a few things I don't use.
How does it look?
Thanks

Hi clarejoanne, Sorry I did not get the L2m tool to you earlier :( I just read about the infection in 9X where you can't see it but have to feel it…lol, I might have ID'ed it if I had thought to ask you what "Seem to have loads of annoying stuff!" meant… :P . You would have said popups right away and that is a sign of L2m on all Operating Systems. No doubt it was there and your efforts with the tools appears to have killed it before I thought to offer the L2mfix, sorry again because I know you worked hard.

I deleted a few things I don't use.
How does it look? Thanks

Looking at the log now, but I am really interested in how it is running

HJT log: Looks good  I want to ask about this program: PANICWARE\POP-UP STOPPER ANTI-SPYWARE. How does it work for you? I have no experience with it but some of the information I provided earlier mention freeware products that I know work. It looks like you removed NORTON ANTIVIRUS and went with C:\PROGRAM FILES\AVPERSONAL\AVGCTRL.EXE. You do know you have a very good popup blocker built into the Google toolbar. Besides your antivirus, you need to run a firewall. If you need one, let me know, I have several free firewalls. Besides that, I run and suggest:
Ad-aware
Spybot
SpywareBlaster
SpwareGuard (or)
TeaTimer (both do about the same thing)
and IE-Spyad.
all are discussed many times in the information I provided. I would say you are good to go, if you have questions let me know, your link will stay open for a few days for this…Phil :wavey:

So far so good, thanks. Seems to be running faster and I have lost the annoying Rundll32 which kept on running and slowing down programs. I am running spyware blaster now. The Popup stopper anti-spyware was a desperation thing! It stopped all those awful winfixer 2005 popups that I was getting. I'm not sure about a firewall as it seemed to slow down my system last time I used one (zonealarm) but if you know of any good ones for Win98 I would appreciate your help. Thanks again for your advice. PS I used a 2 (squared) to remove the look2me infection. It worked a treat, although it's only trialware.
It's good to hear you are running better. SpywareBlaster is a great program, I run most of those I mentioned on three computer. Make sure you check for updates, you do not see it working so it is easy to forget. Here is a tutorial for it: SpywareBlaster
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html If you need instuctions for removing Panicware and turning on the Google popup blocker, just let me know. It will stop popups unless they are from an infection like you had, nothing will stop them that I know of but removing the cause.
I also firmly believe you need a firewall, I have run ZoneAlarm on a Compaq with Win98SE on it for years but I understand all boxes will not run all software because of different configurations. Here are a couple that are available and I can tell you little since I use ZA except my newest Dell and I am using the WinXpSP#2 firewall on it. All I can say is give them a try and remove them if they do not work. I will also include the ZA link in case you want to try it again.

Thanks for the information about a2, I use it along with http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ to remove trojans but did not know it would remove Look2me, thanks to you I will add that to my bag of tricks. Once you get a firewall onboard, if you want to check it's effectiveness, Steve Gibson has made this free tool availble for doing that: https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Here are a few ideas that may help:

http://users.accesscomm.ca/gbraun/w98/
http://www.winxpcentral.com/windows98/faster.php
http://www.davesite.com/computers/windows/

If you make any changes, do them one at a time so you can see how they effect your computer and you will know what is causing an effect you do not want and can change back.
