Hello, very glad to find you and hope someone can help.

Just cannot seem to get rid of popup ads by:
wwwads.com
ads1.revenue.net
empnads.com
Also have some sort of dialler that asks you to confirm an international call at international rates.
Also have a TopFiveSearch.com that refuses to uninstall.

Have today installed XP SP2
Already have installed and run latest versions of
SpyBlaster
Adaware
Spybot
After running, cleaning and rebooting Adaware, 259 Critical Objects always return (if I scan again they are there again! :(

O23 - Service: WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!

Now, please go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit (or click OK)

In the Name column in the next screen look for:

WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc)

it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of these noted file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\program files\common files\wintools <— FOLDER

c:\windows\system32\elitealp32.exe <— file

c:\windows\temp\tbuninst.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode.

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

dir c:\WINDOWS\system32\elite*32.exe /ah > files.txt
dir c:\WINDOWS\system32\elite*32.exe >> files.txt
notepad files.txt
del files.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop. A Notepad window will open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post (into this thread) along with a new Hijack This! log file. :)

Then please do not reboot your machine until after I have given you further instructions.
Hello Micah!

Many thanks for your help. Aplogies for delay in response. At last have managed to execute your instructions. In summary:

Cleared the specified items and did as instructed re 'wintools' etc, reboot in safe mode, exposed hidden folders, cleared files found including EliteToolBar and EliteSideBar folders in "Windows" nad 26 'elite'* files in 'windows/system32'. Also ran Adaware because a while had elapsed - and cleared 46 items.

HJT log looks good but still has sticky 'elitealp'.

Here is the result of ff.bat:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 800C-2EB2

Directory of c:\WINDOWS\system32

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 800C-2EB2

Directory of c:\WINDOWS\system32

Here is the latest HJT log:

One of the bad items has returned…. <_<

Let's try this again, with a "twist".

Boot in "safe" mode FIRST.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\elitealp32.exe

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of these noted file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\windows\system32\elitealp32.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and paste a new Hijack This! log file into this thread.
:)
Hi Micah, Well, I have to tell you that I had rebooted normally by the time I got your post (complicated reasons). Anyway, for what it's worth, I can find no occurrence of any file or folder containing the search argument *elite*, whether I search in 'safe' or 'normal' modes - and i did ensure that the windows explorer folders option showed hidden files and folders - and that the search options included hidden files and folders. But the HJT log still shows the same line referring to 'elitealp.exe' (by the way, all other manifestations of the problem seem to have disappeared ie. the popups etc) I will be glad to continue to try to get rid of the offender if you will. OK, I've just realised that I didn't achieve what you wanted, a double startup in safe mode, with deletion of the offender in between. I will do that and get back. Cheers Noel
Hi Micah,

Hope you are having a good day!
Looks like you have ridded me of the pest.

This is my log after safe mode boot, clear with HJT, safe mode boot, normal mode boot.

I await your verdict!

Many thanks
Noel :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Great news Micah! Thanks for your enormous help and what a fantastic service you HJT guys provide. I also appreciate your contribution to my education. (I am reading up on the other advices also). I WILL be making a donation. God bless you too. Noel :D
