Internet applications not functioning properly

Hi, I've this weird problem with my internet applications. Everytime I boot up, connect to the net using DSL, started using my internet applications, everything seems to be running smoothly. But after a specific timing (like 30-40mins), these applications simply stopped responding. E.g. pages won't load(could only browse the back pages), can't sign in to MSN messenger etc. I've checked my DSL connection using ping commands, there's no problem with that. Had also checked my internet connection settings, the configurations looked fine too. Thus, I suspect that it had something to do with the firewalls which I've previously uninstalled(zonealarm, kerio & sygate). I've uninstall them all cos they either messed up my settings which caused me to have difficulties while browsing pages or simply freeze up my system like what sygate did. Maybe it was my fault that these firewalls did not function properly as they should, that i'm not too sure. So could it be that some of their settings are still lingering in my system which are causing the problems? I had to restart my pc every half an hour or so just to get things working again. Could someone pls help? Thanks in advance! Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 3:15:48 PM, on 8/1/2005 Platform: Windows XP (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 (6.00.2600.0000)
Platform: Windows XP (WinNT 5.01.2600) Wow, you are seriously behind on your updates. Pretty much vulnerable to everything out there. Post a complete HijackThis log please.
Hi, thanks for your reply. I had just reformat my pc & reinstalled the OS just recently, hadn't done any updating yet which explains the lag :P.

Btw, bout the problem which i had earlier. it seemed to have vanished.. Running my internet applications this past week, it's just like before. Wondered why? As I didn't do much changes to my system after the previous post. But firefox has been producing some security error msgs, says something bout SSL being disabled. I'm currently trying to source for this cause.

You are infected by a few different pests.
First Go to Trendmicro for an online virus scan.
If you are prompted for a download from Trendmicro, say yes.
Check the box on the page next to "My Computer" and then click the "Scan" button.
Clean whatever it finds (or you can click the "auto clean" box before starting the scan).
After that is done update Spybot S&D and do a full system scan, fix all items in red when the scan finishes.
Reboot your computer and post a fresh log.

Its not too bad kltsin, I'll take care of it here.

Yeah its an easy one. sorry to interupt.

sunjewel
Please follow rand1038 instructions and he will get you all cleaned up.
Hi rand1038, i've ran both trendmicro & spybot.
Deleted about 17 odd viruses reported on trendmicro(cleaning option not available)
and none from spybot.

Thanks to both rand1038 & kltsin for taking note of my post :D.

First you need to put HijackThis in its own folder.
For example: c:\program files\HJT\HijackThis.exe

Did you uninstall McAfee firewall?

Download Locate from here.
Get locate30beta.exe.
When you install the program make sure the following options are checked in the "Select Components" dialog.
Locate32, Locate, Updtdb32
Once you have installed locate, run it and choose Options > Settings from the menu.
On the general tab uncheck "Text is case sensitive"
Under the "Advanced" tab: select "Always show file extensions"
Uncheck "Don't show hidden and system files"
select "Enable updating"
select "Track file system changes"
Close the settings dialog with the Ok button.
Click file > Update Databases and wait for the process to finish.
Click the "Advanced" tab and select "File and Folder names" in the "Check:" dropdown.
Now you are setup for searching.

Click the "Name and Location" tab.
paste the following into the named box
bootvrfy32
In the "Extensions" box type exe
Look in: Everywhere
Click "Find now"
Note the location(s) of the file and try to make a copy of it. If you can make a copy then put it in a zip folder and send it here.
Post back with the location of the file and a fresh HijackThis log.

I don't want to do any cleanup of your machines infections until we know where and what that file is and you have put HijackThsi into its own folder.
Hi,

I've shifted HijackThis.exe into a newly created HJT folder in program files.

And yes, I had uninstalled McAfee firewall and that was sometime ago. I don't understand why it's still in my system somehow. Any suggestions on how I can get a clean uninstall?

After following closely on the steps to setup Locate for searching, it returned "0 files found" for bootvrfy32.exe. The closest i get is this BOOTVRFY32.EXE - 121999C4.pf in the Windows Prefetch folder.

Thanks again for the follow-up! Appreciate it.
since rand isnt on right now I want to help you get clean as quick as possible.

Goto http://virusscan.jotti.org/

see the Browse at the top of the page
Click it and browse to c:\windows\prefetch
Find BOOTVRFY32.EXE - 121999C4.pf
hit Ok.
Then submit..
Post what info Jotti found on that file in your thread as well as make a copy of BOOTVRFY32.EXE - 121999C4.pf and email it to what rand asked for.

Obviously the online scan deleted the file but left the prefetch behind so its still loading at boot.
After you reply rand then can continue helping you.
Ok, thanks.

Here's the scan results from Jotti

This one is a resource hog but not malicious in any way. Office will function fine without it running.

Delete the follwoing files (if found)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mssch2.exe

Hi,

I was able to fix all in HijackThis except this despite numerous attempts:
O23 - Service: McAfee Personal Firewall Service (MpfService) - McAfee Security - (no file)

mssch2.exe was found and deleted. But I wasn't able to locate the other two.
There's one similar to dmdlgs32.exe thou, it's dmdlgs.dll.

dmdlgs.dll is ok, it stands for Disk Management Dialogs. The exe was someone taking advantage of an existing name to try and fool people looking at the file.

How is eveything working?

For the McAfee problem:
Download RegScan.vbs and unzip it.
Double click the script to run it and paste the following into the search box.
McAfee,MPFExe,MpFireWall,MPFSERVICE
Click Ok. The script will run for awhile. If you don't get an error message then it is still working.
When the search finishes you will get a message box, after you click "Ok" on that the results will open in a text file.
The name of the file that opens is "results.txt" and is in the same folder as the script.
If the file is less than 50 or so lines then paste the contents here. If it is longer than that then use the "Browse" button under the "File Attachments" heading that you will see when you open a reply to this topic. Make sure to click Add this Attachment after you browse to the files location.
