"…This report highlights how, as with the first quarter of 2005, adware and spyware are the types of threats most detected by Panda ActiveScan. In fact, 51 percent of all detections correspond to these two categories. Next down the list of the most widespread malicious code come Trojans, responsible for 21 percent of malware detected, and 3 percent up on the previous quarter. Within this group, some 27 percent belong to the subgroup of ‘Downloaders’, a category that is closely linked to adware and spyware. This subcategory is made up of specimens that are used to download certain programs onto infected computers in order to carry out malicious action. There has been a clear trend among Trojans to distribute variants that are able to steal financial information stored on computers. Users’ current accounts are obviously directly under threat if their online banking details are stolen by these Trojans. Whereas previously email worms were the main malware threat, PandaLabs has reported that the number of detections has decreased significantly, to a modest 7 percent of detections reported by Panda ActiveScan. On the other hand, there has been an increase in the number of ‘bots’, which can turn infected computers into ‘zombies’ under the control of the creators of this malware, sending out spam or serving as a platform for a wide range of attacks…"
