Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

I maintain the PCs at a small firm and one of our summer interns did a number on this one. It had SO MUCH adware on it… sheesh! Anyway, I've done everything I can and I just can't shake this one that keeps replicating and renaming itself.

Help?

Here's the log:

Hello jgbpc, welcome to the forum. Sorry about the delay in responding :( If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
I definitely still need help. Thanks. Getting random popups all the time, whether or not I've started the browser or any applications. This morning when I turned the laptop on, a "web service installing" icon appeared in the systray and it installed Ezula, which I removed with Ewido and Ad-Aware. It's a never ending battle with this thing. The new latest log is below.

Oh, and ever since this started with Nail.exe last week (which is gone now, but seemed to be the catalyst for all this), I have not been able to utilize windowsupdate.microsoft.com to install the latest OS fixes.

Launch ewido:

You may will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

[*]On the left hand side of the main screen click update

[*]Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. After the updates are installed, exit ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

[*]If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.

[*]Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!

[*]Click on scanner

[*]Click on Settings
  • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
  • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
  • Click OK

[*]Click on Complete system scan

[*]Let the program scan the machine

[*]If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. NOTE: We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, AOL, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged. In particular, watch for alerts that have the word "Heuristic" in them - if you recognize the file name as "friendly," these may actually be false positives) select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections." If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.

[*]Click Save report

[*]Save the report to your desktop

[*]Exit ewido
Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
LDTate - Huge thanks for your help. I am just walking out the door for a 1 week vaca. I will follow your instructions and re-post to bump this up when I return. Thanks! - JG
LDTate - Well, when I got back from vaca, I was so busy that this laptop sat in a cabinet all this time. Finally pulled it out this morning and followed your instructions. Here's the ewido scan log. I can't believe how much stuff it cleaned that I thought I'd already killed off! I'll be posting the HiJackThis log shortly. SHEESH. That definitely didn't kill it. The popups started as I was saving the hijackthis log off to the network so I could post it. Ugh. Here you go. Any help is much appreciated.

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

delete these files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\FQNTEXT.DLL

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Was able to do everything you said EXCEPT delete fqntext.dll. When I attempted to delete I got a message that the file was in use. (Yes, I was in safe mode.) So, I finished the rest of your instructions and booted into safe mode w/the cmd prompt and tried to delete, but it said it could not find the file. I started explorer and looked in c:\windows\system32\ and THERE IT WAS! I tried to delete it and couldn't. I rebooted and tried this process AGAIN to make sure I had typed everything right at the prompt. I did it all right and got the same result. Ran HiJackThis again and it was still listed. Checked it and fixed it again and ran another scan and it is STILL there.

So… here's my log. The good news is that I didn't get any popups during any of this.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
LDTate, Don't know how relevant this is, but I encountered one problem After the reboot, a command window appeared which says: Killing explorer and Rundll32.exe The system cannot find the path specified. 0 files copied. And then a windows alert titled Registry Editor that said: Cannot export backregs\(longstringonumbers).reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error. [OK] When I hit OK, it immediately popped up a new error identical to the first except it had a different long string 'o numbers. After hitting OK three times, it finally continued the scan. It's running now. Post again momentarily. Jenna
