deltabull,

Welcome to Tom Coyote, sorry about the delay but we have been up to our ears with infected computers.

If you have not resolved your issue and still need my assistance, please move HJT to its own folder and post a new log please.

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

Ken :D
ok, made folder, and transferred …here is our new logfile:

deltabull, Glad we didn't lose you, you have few infections going on. I am going to look over your new log and be back in a bit. Ken :D
deltabull,

You may want to print this out as we will be closing your web browser for part of the fix. Run HJT, Scan Only, close all open windows and your web browser, put a checkmark in the following entries and click on FIX CHECKED.

* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now run a couple of online virus scanners, be sure to set them to Auto-Clean and post back with your next HJT log with anything they found and could not fix.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Make sure your Mcafee is up to date and run a full scan.

Download and run CCleaner
It is a very safe program to run. It will clean out all your temp files and all kinds of not needed garbage.
It will also clean out all your cookies, so if there are some you are dependant on, open the program and go to
OPTIONS> COOKIES and all your cookies will load in the left window,
just move the ones you want to keep to the right window.
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Empty your Recycle Bin and then post a new log along with anything the virus scanners found and could not fix.

Good Morning Deltabull,

Your log is looking much better but we still have a few more things to do.

Go to your ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS IN THE CONTROL PANEL and see if these are in there, if present, uninstall them.

AdTools Service
Wintools

Now make sure you still have windows enabled to show all files and folders and boot back into Safemode.

Look for and delete these files and folders if present.

C:\PROGRAM FILES\AdTools Service <– This Folder in Bold
C:\WINDOWS\system32\r?gedit.exe <– This file in Bold

Now run HJT Scan Only and remove these entries, they are not critical but will free up your system a little.

Use the links in my signature to download both Spyboy Search and Destroy 1.4 and Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 They are both excellent free program that you should have, and run on a regular basis.. Instructions for both here.

* Install Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS.

Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL/ PERFORMANCE AND MAINTAINENCE/ ADD-REMOVE
PROGRAMS
scroll to that program and click on REMOVE.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to MODE and click on ADVANCED MODE.
* Then to SETTINGS / FILE SETS and take the checkmark out of USAGE TRACKS.
* Then to TOOLS/ HOSTS FILE and then on the top click on ADD SPYBOT S&D HOSTS FILES.
* Then to TOOLS/ IE TWEAKS and put a checkmark in to LOCK THE HOSTS FILES
* Then check for UPDATES.
* Then to Immunize. then up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on IMMUNIZE.
* Then go to the top to SPYBOT and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN.
* Then to FIX PROBLEMS and fix all it finds.

Then RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of AD-AWARE You can remove via
the ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS IN THE CONTROL PANEL

* During installation, follow all the DEFAULTS .
* Start the program and CHECK FOR UPDATES
* Take the checkmark out of SEARCH FOR NEGLIGIBLE RISK FILES
* Choose PERFORM FULL SYSTEM SCAN
* Run the scan
* When it is done, RIGHT CLICK ONE ONE OF THE ENTRIES/ SELECT ALL/ NEXT
and let it remove all that if finds.

When done, post a new log and hopefully you will be all cleaned up :D
ok, Ken,
I've done all that you recommended….except we didn't remove the Wild Tangent, as I'm assured by the other half that it's harmless game drivers for all the AOL games she plays online :) …here's the log file……

Fred,

Your log looks clean :D

As far as this line…

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = www.google.com

I just ment for you to remove only one of the entries, but no harm done. You can run HJT, View the List of Backups and restore one of them if you like.

As far as the line for Wild Tangent, if you removed it, it would just prompt you to reinstall the downloaded game next time you wanted to play it. We usually remove that line because it is known to have spyware bundeled with it, but if you are not experienceing any more problems, than you may be ok, but keep an eye on it in the future. Online games are a haven for spyware, so be careful of what you download.

Here are some tips and free tools for you to install to help keep the bad guys out.

You have done this already, so from now on, just run CCleaner
Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
clean out your TEMP FILES

* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Now, while in SAFEMODE,

* click on START/ RUN , and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This will open up the temp directory that your machine uses. GO TO EDIT/ SELECT ALL and delete all the contents of that folder.
* Do this for each user of your computer.
* Do this same process for %windir%\temp.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB, (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now we need to TURN OFF and then TURN BACK ON SYSTEM RESTORE.

This will remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent
any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points
which are likely to be infected)

Turn off System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Now while in System Restore, create a new Restore Point

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.
* If you want to use a free program, try this one –> http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

* Run SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY/ CHECK FOR UPDATES/ IMMUNIZE and run a full system scan on a regular basis.

* Run AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL/ CHECK FOR UPDATES and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN on a regular basis.

* Follow the links at the bottom of my post and download and run SPYWARE BLASTER, check for updates and enalble all protection.

* Also install SPYWARE GUARD.
These two programs won't scan your system, but will sit in the background blocking most of the garbage from installing in the first place.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/ GO TO PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Consider surfing with the Firefox Browser it is a lot more secure that IE and less prone to getting infected with malware. This wil no way interfere with IE, you can use them both. Just don't make it your default browser until you feel comfortable with it.
