Gwen asked me for help with her computer as it was unusable due to continual pop-ups in IE6. I installed Spybot and MS Anti Spyware Beta. Big improvement, but still some pop-ups. Today I installed and ran CounterSpy. The computer seems to be OK until I open IE, then a some pop-ups continue to launch. The computer uses Windows XP, and SP2 is not yet installed. I am planning to do this as soon as possible. I had some difficulty downloading, since Windows Update works only with IE. I will post the HijackThis log in next reply.

sorry, dont follow advice, I just viewed the rules. I am not a authorized member. Wait for a moderator.
1. I ran Ewido in safe mode and Nailfix.cmd.
2. Nail.exe was present in HijackThis scan so I checked that box and 'fixed' it.
3. SP2 for Windows XP has been installed.
4. CounterSpy has blocked two items trying to install. So there is still some illicit activity. One was Appropos.

Thank you for your help. Here is latest HijackThis log:

Hello lampguy, welcome to the forum. Sorry about the delay in responding :( If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Thank you. I've been working on it. Just ran Ewido scan in safe mode and took off 105 nasties (again!). Then ran HijackThis scan and found a few more that I recognized, including aurora handler,Navisearch, Cashback, and Nail.

Couldn't delete Nail.exe, so ran NailFix. Took care of that, I think. Here is latest scan (run in Safe Mode).

Search for and delete these files if listed:
wsn71cht.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pbnoar.exe
c:\windows\system32\eaembu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tbkwks.dll

Computer behavior:
1. Firefox appears to be behaving OK.

2. IE6 went to default MSN site, but may have shown some extra characters in the title bar briefly before going there. Could have been some script still running?

3. Hasn't been able to connect to Win2k server since the adware problem became severe, although I can ping it. Can't map the drive. Says path does not exist.

4. Otherwise seems to be behaving normally.
Good Job

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

Sorry I can't help much on this one. I'd compare ALL network settings on this unit with another unit that is working.
So far not a hint of a popup. We solved the networking problem, too. So I'm feeling quite optimistic ((but it's kind of hard to type with my fingers crossed :P !) The restore process in your post – is that just to get rid of old restore points and set a new one? Thank you very much for your help. Bill

Yes. There can be the bad guys we killed hanging out there to re-infect if restore is used. Best to make a clean one to restore back to if needed
