My desktop keeps flashing from black to the regular wallpaper with the icons, to a black ad page for spyware removal. A message box comes up (one after the other) every few seconds saying that "Internet explorer cannot find the Active Desktop HTML file. This file is needed for your active desktop."

The explorer homepage is permanently set to About:blank. I can't get it to change to any other homepage. If I try to use Yahoo, it keeps changing back to the About:Blank search page with its own ads.
I also have a permanent popup on my screen from Norton AntiVirus with a Virus Alert that it has detected a virus on my computer Object name, c:\WINDOWS System32\WININET.dll, virus Name, Bloodhound.W32EP, and that access to the file was denied. My subscription has expired to Norton as I don't use it. . I cannot get this pop up box to x out or the "OK" button to clear the box. I can only move it around on the screen, and it stays in the front of all the other screens.

I use Panda Antivirus Titanium. During the first Panda scan, it quit responding in the Recycler file. I restarted the computer and cleaned out the recycle bin, but nothing functional changed. I have run Spybot search and destroy, Adaware, and Panda again, and none of them found anything that is causing the problem. (Adaware did remove some things on my initial scan). I keep getting advertising popups on my screen with a "warning" in the blue bar at the top. Even when I have not opened up explorer.
I ran "hijackthis", and this is my log: Please help!
After reading one of your help pages, I did consult one of the sites you recommended to identify bad start up pages (04 codes) and I deleted PS2, sp, and MSMSGS in the 04 section using the Hijack this.
Thank you for any help you can give me :( !

Hi welcome to TOM COYOTE FORUMS

You are running hijackthis from the desktop
please create and move it into a folder like c:\hijackthis and run it from there from now on

Step#1
Download CWShredder

If you are using anything other than Windows xp you may need a zip program.
Please download the evaluation version of Winzip.

Step#2
Download SpSeHjfix112.zip to the desktop. Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix then unzip SpSeHjfx112.zip into the new folder.

Step#3
Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.

Step#4
Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Step#5
Reboot into Safe Mode by Tapping F8 while booting up then navigate to the folder on your desktop called spfix and then

Step#6
Run 'SpSeHjfx112.exe'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the spfix folder.

Step#7
Once it is finished, Fix with CWShredder - Click The FIX button!

Step#8
Reboot into Safe Mode and Repeat steps 5, 6 and 7 above

Step#9
Reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

See if you able to go to windows updates and get ALL CRITICAL UPDATES

If not then just proceed on and give a new log
Hi! I have tried your instructions, but could not get back on the internet with the infected computer, so I have copied the logs and put them on another computer so I could post them here. Should I try to install another copy of the internet explorer on the infected computer? The desktop continues to flash and I get a popup over and over that says Internet Explorer cannot find the Active Desktop HTML file.
Hereare the logs. Thank you thank you thank you….

i hope to get you back online with this machine before we attempt the other

have you done this ?

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

could you also run your panda scan?
see if it cleans the bloodhound virus

after that please give me a new hijackthis log
I followed the directions for resetting the web settings, but I can't get internet explorer to work. It tells me it "Cannot find the server." when I try to get on. Would it help to do safe mode in networking? But if that works, how do i get it to work when it is not is safe mode?
I ran Panda in safe mode, but it did not detect any virus.
Here is the lates hijack this log. Thank you so much for your help.

Post a new HiJackThis log
I followed your instructions but could not find any programs named Virtual maid, Security IGuard, or SearchMaid. I could not find these or the System32 Logfiles folders in hidden files. I saw some things that said "log" with different pre and/or suffixes, but not that exact name.
I ran Cleanup and it deleted over 45000 temp. files, but I got a message afterwards that said:
Cleanup! has detected one or more browsers running.
I could not find a way to close them (it said to).
After the instructions to run Hijack this and check the boxes of the following items, but there were no items listed to fix. I ran all the programs you said to run. My hijack file is below. It was run after regular startup.
i am still getting repeated popup windows that say "Internet Explorer cannot find the Active Desktop HTML file. This file is needed for your Active Desktop. To turn off Active Desktop, click OK."
The background of the desktop continues to flash from black to white to a background advertisement warning me that my computer may be infected and to 'click here' to get protection.
The norton popup continues about bloodhound w32 ep. I read on one website that was a term Norton used for a category of unknown viruses. Thank you for persevering with me!!!!

lets see if we can fix IE first :)

Please enable viewing of hidden files by following the directions on this page for your particular operating system.

Locate this file using Windows Explorer (Windows key +e)):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wininet.dll

Right-click on it and select "Rename" and rename it to wininet.old

Then on top in the menu, choose tab 'view' > 'refresh'
Look if there is a new wininet.dll created in your system32-folder. If there is, stop here and post back to let me know.

If not:

Go into this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache

Inside the dllcache-folder, locate wininet.dll. Right-click on it and choose "Copy".

Go back to your C:\Windows\system32-folder, go to the "Edit" menu, and choose "Paste".

Then reboot your computer into normal mode.

Find and delete these files:
C:\Windows\System32\wininet.old
C:\Windows\System32\oleadm32.dll

Reboot your computer again.

Go to Jotti Virus Scan once again.

Upload C:\Windows\system32\wininet.dll again.

Let it scan and post the results in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.
I followed the directions–couldn't find "oleadm32.dll"
My desktop background has stopped flashing. It is now just black. In my bottom right toolbar, I still have a red circle with a white exclamation point in it that says "your computer is infected" when you put the cursor over it. If I right click on the desktop, the Display Properties box only has tabs for Screen Saver and Settings. I haven't tried to get on the internet yet until you think I should.
Thank you!

Then CLOSE all other windows including this and press FIX CHECKED

After that you need to REBOOT into safe mode. It Is important that you do so or the fix may not work. These may be hidden files.
Find and delete the following folders

C:\PROGRA~1\Comet\ <—– you do not use this do you? i found very little information on this program(it seems very dubious) In any case there is some broken link with it
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\

and the following file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\bg9hcniq.exe

Reboot

Try to get online now
Go windows updates and get ALL CRITICAL UPDATES

Does Panda Antivirus or symantec come with a firewall?
If not then a good one can be downloaded here
ZONEALARM

After that REBOOT scan with hijackthis and
POST a new log in this thread using 'Post Reply'
Before i start–do I follow the directions given in the website you put at the top of the page before following your instructions? That certainly is exactly what I have seen on the desktop!!!!
its to let you know whats wrong :)

i would like you to try doing points 2 and 3
please DO NOT follow point 1 !
we need the system restore points as backup even if its an infected restore point

1. To disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP) (skip this)

Do the following
2. To update the virus definitions
3. To scan for and delete the infected files

are you running 2 anti virus?
its recommended that you only run one
Could not find the process you said to delete in the task manager.

I did delete the files with hijack this that you said. I couldn't get the computer to start in safe mode (I think I was tapping "8", not "F8"…sorry). I did Hijack this again and the files were not there, so I guess it worked.
Also, in safe mode, could not find the bg9hcniq file with .exe as a suffix
I found two labelled "bg9hcniq" but the .exe was not with them, so I didn't delete.
Didn't find Win Tools or Comet folders either.

I notices on Hijack log that there is a PS2 and PS2guard. i had read somewhere that those were connected with the virus. Should I delete those?
The red circle with the exclamation point is still there and still says 'Your Computer is Infected'.
Also, there'ssomething called Easy Internet Sign-Up (with a hand Icon), andsomething called Popsubtract'. I don't know what that is. My son thinks it came with the computer. I've never seen it. It just showed up recently.
My Display Properties still only shows ScreenSaver and Settings tabs. There is no tab for the desktop background.

I still can't get on the Internet. It says No connection is currently available. The ethernet cable is plugged in and the plug is illuminated on the back of the computer where it is plugged in , and the router is blinking. This computer I am using is plugged into the same router, the router light is on and not blinking, and it is working. Here is my hijack log:

I can now get on the internet using my login. !!!
My display properties only have tabs for screen saver and settings. The background is black. The little red circle with the white exclamation point is still on the toolbar at the bottom.
I have downloaded zone alarm.
I updated Panda and scanned, and it deleted "W32/smitfraud.D". Didn't you have me download something by that name?
I also downloaded the windows updates.
However, when my son logged in on his login, he could not get on the internet and the url address on his login internet screens still say "about:blank". How do I get it off of his page? Do I need to do everything you have told me for every login on the computer? Thank you so much for all your help!! Things are looking up! :P
