I've been having a lot of problems, including unwanted WinFixer popups, unreliable startups, and stalled AdAware and Spybot scans. Here's my log:

Hi,

I am finished looking over your log and have some suggestions to make.
If you have any questions about any step, please ask before you execute the instruction.
It might also help you to print out these instructions
  • I want you to download CWShredder (the stand alone version is free).
Run the program and click Check for Update. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of CWShredder and choose FIX. Here is the link:
    CWS Shredder

    Reboot your computer
  • Please download Ewido Security Suite, it is a free version of the program.
    • Install Ewido security suite
    • When installing the program, under "Additional Options" uncheck…
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    • Launch Ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • The program will now open to the main screen.
    • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files:
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
    Ewido manual updates
  • Once the updates are installed, do the following:
    • Click on scanner.
    • Click on Complete System Scan, the scan will now begin.
    • While the scan is in progress you will be promoted to clean files, click OK.
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check mark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
    • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located at the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
    • Click Save Report.
    • Now save the report .txt file to your desktop.
    Now close Ewido security suite.
Once you have completed these steps, please post a new HijackThis log and the log generated from the Ewido scan.

Thanks maynard.

Did it remove anything?

I would like some more information about one of the files in your log.

Please click http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and upload the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\HR4P0Ob2.dll.

Now, let's do some work on your log.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

In the Tools menu of any folder, select Folder options.
  • click the view tab.

Thanks for the help! CWShredder results were clean. (Sorry I forgot to mention that.) Here's the scan on that one file: File: HR4P0Ob2.dll Status: OK MD5 65dd16c6f38e4ca3125f9045c10b78f5 Packers detected: - Scanner results AntiVir Found nothing ArcaVir Found nothing Avast Found nothing AVG Antivirus Found nothing BitDefender Found nothing ClamAV Found nothing Dr.Web Found nothing F-Prot Antivirus Found nothing Fortinet Found nothing Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found nothing NOD32 Found nothing Norman Virus Control Found nothing UNA Found nothing VBA32 Found nothing I'll start on the rest shortly. Thanks again.
OK, I'm having some problems with Safe Mode. When I get it started in Safe Mode, it gives me a choice between logging on as Administrator (which doesn't appear in normal mode) and my wife's username (which I have been using for this process). My username and my daughter's (normally there) do not appear. The Admin username requests a password, and if I ever set one up I don't remember what it was. So I login under my wife's name. It goes through the black screen Safe Mode phase and starts Windows. Then I go to search for the first file. At various points in the process of starting the search or attempting to delete a file, the screen returns to the black Safe Mode screen and nothing I do will get Windows back. So I have to push the button and restart. Twice I got all the way to finding the apas.dll file and attempting to delete it. But when I said Yes to putting it in the recycle bin, I receive "Error deleting File or Folder" then something about the file being in use by another user… (the screen then goes to black Safe Mode before I can copy down the exact message. Any suggestions?
Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
  • Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
    • All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
  • Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
  • Double click on KillVundo.bat
    • When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
  • Please press any key to continue.
  • Wait for HiJackThis to open.
  • When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following items, if found:O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\Config\apas.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: apas - C:\WINDOWS\Config\apas.dll
  • Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal!
Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Please navigate to c:\windows\config and delete any file name with the dll name spelled backwards.
Examples of how this may appear are:

C:\WINDOWS\Config\sapa.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\Config\sapa.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\Config\sapa.ini
C:\WINDOWS\Config\sapa.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\Config\sapa.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\Config\sapa.tmp1
C:\WINDOWS\Config\sapa.tmp2

Post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

What's next?

And again, many thanks. B)
HI, barkercrowd,

Let's see if we have better luck with this one this time around.

Be sure that all windows are closed. Click on START-> RUN. Copy paste the following as it is and click OK.

regsvr32.exe /U wmhw.dll

You should get a message that it has been uninstalled successfully.
Then be sure that all windows are still closed. Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, just start the program button. .Put a check mark on these entries.Hit FIX CHECKED button.

I have found conflicting information about this entry. O16 entries are activex controls that get downloaded to your computer when you visit certain websites. If you have this entry fixed with the rest, when you revist miniclip it will download again.
I would recommend checking it in HijackThis.

*Close all open programs (including browser windows) and fix the Items by clicking the Fix checked button..

Reboot your system into Safe mode..

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and delete them.

FILES:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\HR4P0Ob2.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wmhw.dll

Delete Your Prefetch files.
  • Navigate to c:\Windows\Prefetch\
  • delete all the files in the folder.
Leave the folder its self, just delete the files in it.

Clean out temporary files:
  • ClickStart->Run
  • Type cleanmgr and press enter.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
Run HijackThis and post a new log and tell me about any problems you had while doing these steps.
Also, Please comment on how your machine is running now.

m
maynard,

New HijackThis log posted below.

I ran the procedures you outlined.

When I ran the regsvr32 process, I got this message:

"wmhw.dll was loaded, but the DllUnregisterServer entry point was not found. The file can not be registered."

Ran HijackThis with no problems, fixing the three files (the miniclip file is from a game site my kids have visited. They'll be doing that only on their eMac from now on).

No troubles with Safe Mode this time. The HR4P0Ob2.dll file was not found, but I did find and delete the wmhw.dll file.

Got rid of the contents of the Prefetch folder, ran cleanmgr and cleaned up the file types you indicated.

Rebooted in normal mode, ran HijackThis. Here's the log:

Overall, this machine seems to be running much better. Certainly we have seen smoother Internet access.

Is there more "surgery" to do, or are we ready to talk about preventive measures to take from here?

Thanks for all your help!
barkercrowd,

Just a minor post-op procedure. The main surgery is done.

Now, let's do some work on your log.

run HijackThis.

*Click Do a system scan only .
*Place a check in the box before each of these Items.

O21 - SSODL: jfyEHoL - {FC5D268B-56F7-8C21-F728-B406C7C49617} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wmhw.dll (file missing)

*Close all open programs (including browser windows) and fix the Items by clicking the Fix checked button..

Reboot your system normally to complete the fix..

Run HijackThis and post a new log

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.
