Thanks,

Skawas - Let me know if you think there is anything else I should do. My sister-in-law always uses AOL and when they start the computer they have 4 user names but they only use one. Any suggestions?
Excellent!! Glad to hear that junk is gone.
Those Rootkits are some of the hardest infections to remove. :(

As long as only one account is being used on the computer, you can delete the unused accounts. Be sure that any needed information contained in them is moved to the active account before deletion.
To delete the accounts, click Start < Control Panel < User Accounts. Click on the account you would like to remove and choose "Delete the account". Choose whether to save the account files by selecting "Choose Files" or "Delete Files" than click "Delete Account".
Do this for all accounts that you would like to remove. (This will need to be done from an account with administrator privileges.)

There are a couple of optional items that can be removed from the computer which may give better performance.

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check the following:

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Automatic updates for ViewPoint products such as ViewPoint Media Player (as bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Compuserve, etc) Recommended to check here and remove with Add/Remove Programs.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click Fix Checked.

Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
If everything is still working well, I'll give you some recommendations to better secure the computer.
Hello alsocom Thanks for all your patience. (Bows three times and shows great respect).

Do you know any more info on what that nasty was?(C:Program Files\wuqxtqwp)

On every boot mcafee advises about a new update.I tried once it opened aol :rant2:
then said your subsciption is gone do you want to purchase the personal firewall.
(I know what I'd do if this were my computer) I'd at least like to stop that from
loading up.

Thanks again for all your help.
I read some posts here and just from working with you can spot lots of bad boys.
If it's ok I'd like to post my own hj log to see what you think.
If so should I start a new post?

Skawas

It is possible that the infection interfered with the McAfee program so you may need to uninstall and reinstall McAfee to fix it.

We like to keep one computers log per thread. Please start a new topic for your computer and someone will be along soon to help you out.

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Glad we could be of assistance. This topic is now closed. If you wish it reopened, please send us an email (Click for address) with a link to your thread.
