Hello east;

You have multiple infestations. Please post back when finished, as there well may be considerably more to do. In addition, at a later time I will offer you some free programs, that will help keep this from happening again.

Please read the complete post first, you should copy and paste this post to a Notepad text Document, or print it.
Download SspSeHjfix.exe for 2k/XP and unzip http://www.derbilk.de/404.html . Don't run it now we will use it later.

Download and install http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.php
Download and install Adaware, uncheck "show help file" and "perform full system scan" at the end of the installing routine, perform the update and close Adaware. You will need it later.

Download the stand-alone version of CWShredder 2.12
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe Now, please update the program, but do not run it yet.

Download the Peperfix Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Next:
You have the Peper trojan among other infestations. It is advised to fix the Peper infestation first.

Make sure you are connected to the Internet and run the Peper Fix; reboot afterwards. Repeat the procedure as it has to be run twice to ensure its effectiveness.

Reboot into Safe Mode. To do this, press the F8 key repeatedly as the computer starts up until you see a menu screen (if Windows starts normally, restart it again). Use the arrow keys to highlight "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

Next:
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next:

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

While still in Safe Mode,

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK, and delete them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddmpgk.dll

C:\DOCUME~1\donna\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll

Next:

Do not reboot and remain in Safe Mode.

Please close every window, disconnect from Internet completely and doubleclick the CWShredder icon on your Desktop.
Click Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Start Ccleaner and click: Run Cleaner. Let it finish.

Start SspSeHjfix.exe, click on " Desinfection starten" and let it finish.

Then, please reboot.

Next:
Please run Ad-Aware SE and let it fix anything it asks about.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log, without any changes.

Hello east;

Looks like there is a bit more to do. Please note there will be tools to download and use. Any that you already have do not need to be downloaded again, but should be updated before beginning.

I would advise to copy and paste this into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to read while you work, or print it. A printout can be used as a checklist, to reduce the possibility of errors.

Again, I would remind you that Hijack This must be placed in a folder of its own, or the backups it makes will be lost. It must not be ran from a temporary, or zip file. These backups could be critical to restoring your system in the event of a problem. Ignore this at your own peril.

Please disable SpySweeper now. If this is not done, it will try to prevent us from making the changes that are necessary.

Please read the complete post first.

Download and install http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.php

Download and install Adaware, uncheck "show help file" and "perform full system scan" at the end of the installing routine, perform the update and close Adaware. You will need it later

Download and save to your Desktop, don't run it now, we will use it later:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxAgentB.exe

Download and then double click http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe. Then close every window and disconnect from Internet, double click the CWSshredder icon on your Desktop.
Click Fix, ok and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Next:

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Next:

Shut down all running programs, make sure that you are not connected to the internet!
Double-click the FxAgentB.exe file to start the removal tool.
Save the log it makes and post it in your next reply.
Please do NOT start any other applications until the removal tool exits and the computer is restarted.

Restart the computer.

Run the removal tool again to ensure that the system is clean.

Start Ccleaner and click: Run Cleaner.

Run Adaware and perform a full system scan.

Reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread along with the log from FxAgentB , Using the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log, without revisions.

As you can see about blank still exist I HATE CWS
Hi east;

I'm not completely sure why the recommended fixes are failing. However, I do know that for some reason, not all the recommendations that I have provided have been followed and there is evidence of that, in the HJT log.

Lets try this again. Please, either print this, or copy and paste it into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to read as you work. This will reduce the liklihood of errors.
If all these recommendations are not carefully followed, exactally in the order given, the fix is likely to fail again.

Do not be concerned if it appears the fix has failed because you see evidence of CWS in your HJT log. We will fix that later, if necessary.

I would recommend that all the programs below should be downloaded fresh and only they be used and that any additional copies of those same programs you may already have, be deleted.

Please update all these programs as they are downloaded, if that option is available.

:
Step#1
Download CWShredder

If you are using anything other than Windows xp you may need a zip program.
Please download the evaluation version of Winzip.

Step#2
Download SpSeHjfix112.zip to the desktop. Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix then unzip SpSeHjfx112.zip into the new folder.

Step#3
Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.

Step#4
Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Step#5
Reboot into Safe Mode by Tapping F8 while booting up then navigate to the folder on your desktop called spfix and then

Step#6
Run 'SpSeHjfx112.exe'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the spfix folder.

Step#7
Once it is finished, Fix with CWShredder - Click The FIX button!

Step#8
Reboot into Safe Mode and Repeat steps 5, 6 and 7 above

Step#9
Reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

You have been a great help
anything else I should do?
Hello east;
I'm only too glad to help. Do you recall that I said that all recommendations were not being followed ? This is only one of the things to which I was referring. I've asked you to do this three times. It is for the protection of your PC and thankfully it has not been necessary, so far.

Next:

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Then, please reboot.

Please do all of the following, without delay. It will protect your PC.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice.
So how did I get infected in the first place?

The following is not optional, it must be done.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK

Good luck.
