I'm really sorry if this post is in the wrong forum, but I didn't know where else to put it and it involves a HijackThis log so I thought I might as well put it here.

My computer seems to have a large amount (20+) items in the bottom right taskbar on startup, many of which I cannot close and do not know if they are necessary. I recently fixed a virus on my other computer through this forum and at the end of it the Classroom Teacher (LDTate) advised me on removing certain entries because they were "resource hogs and not needed at startup", so I'm wondering if anyone else can do the same. Here is my log, and thank you very much.

Hello drgnasd , welcome back.
Is this the same one we just cleaned?

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

ALL 016's. They'll come back if needed,

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

To configure Windows to show all files

Do the following:

On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Do the following:

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY Listed Profile USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Hey again, LDTate! I'm glad that you remember me :).

No, this is not a log from the computer we just fixed (thanks again, by the way!). That was a HijackThis log from my other, supposedly "clean" computer (one which had a history of several virii, all of which I managed to clean with the help of programs or experienced people, like yourself.

I did all that you asked me to, but got as a result two warning messages:

1. This one says "SPYWAREGUARD BROWSER PROTECTION ALERT!"
WARNING! YOUR IE search page has been changed!
Your Internet Explorer current user search page has been changed from

No, this is not a log from the computer we just fixed

Then you should have posted a new Topic in the hjt forum, not asking for the other one to be reopened. Please keep that in mind

Please download hoster from the link below.

http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

Unzip Hoster.zip
Open Hoster.exe.

Then click on "Restore Original Hosts"

Close program when complete.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Oh, but I DID post a new topic. If you look in the forum, this is a new topic and is not a continuation of the previous fix. It's just that this topic was not responded to within 5 days either, so I posted it into the "So what do you do if you have no response in 5 days?" thread. Sorry for the confusion.

Did the fix take care of that?
Two popups appeared upon startup of my computer just now: (1) "McAfee SecurityCenter Some components of McAfee SecurityCenter are either missing or may not have been installed properly. Please reinstall McAfee SecurityCenter." (2) The same popup that you just quoted. After I clicked "Keep New Value," the following popup appeared: "SpywareGuard Browser Hijack Protection New IE search page value kept (http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch) No, the fix did not take care of that :(. Any suggestions?
Disable SpywareGuard: Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program. Then go to Menu, file, exit. Then confirm the program is closed. Set your homepage to what you want. Reboot and see if the homepage stays like you want it.
The homepage was set fine, but I still have the McAfee SecurityCenter error: McAfee SecurityCenter Some components of McAfee SecurityCenter are either missing or may not have been installed properly. Please reinstall McAfee SecurityCenter Also, my dsl connection is unusually slow and my CPU usage seems to be high, when I am not running too many processes (just IE, AOL Instant Messenger, and sometimes a game). Do you know why?
It looks like you are running McAfee and Norton's Anti-Virus programs. You should only run one at a time. They will cause look-ups and conflicts. Use Add/Remove Programs and remove one of them. See if that does the trick.
I went to Add/Remove Programs and tried to uninstall "McAfee Security Center," but when I clicked the Change/Remove button, it didn't do anything. And I clicked it SEVERAL times. But I guess that's due to the fact that some of its components are missing, eh?
I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Open c:\program Files\McAfee.com <–Delete this folder

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I deleted the O4's and O23's, but when I tried to delete the "McAfee.com" folder, it said "Cannot delete MpfService.exe: Access is denied. Source file may be in use." So then I opened my task manager and tried to close the two processes: "MPFSERVICE.exe" and "MSTask.exe' but the error message popped up: "The operation could not be completed. Access is denied."

So now what? How do I remove the McAfee programs from my computer?

My computer seems fine now; the McAfee SecurityCenter popup doesn't appear on startup anymore, and my CPU Usage seems to be low (below 10%).
Restart your computer in Safe Mode Press the F8 key, when you see the Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen. Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter. Now see if you can delete it.
Yes, thanks, I was able to delete it. I also deleted the Desktop Shortcut and the Start Menu Folder(s). Any other tips to get my computer running at its optimum level? Thanks.
