We have a pop-up stopper, I run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy regularly, and we have antivirus software that keeps catching (and supposedly deleting) a hijack trojan exploit that takes us regularly to pages of porn, but it doesn't prevent the page from showing.

Here is the HijackThis log. Can anyone help please?

Thanks VERY MUCH!

Okay, after posting yesterday, I've been reading some of the helping going on. So I tried to do a couple of things. First, I uninstalled the old Spybot Search and Destroy, downloaded the new one 1.4, and ran it. That found some things, and I deleted them. Then, I uninstalled the old Ad-Aware, downloaded Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06, and ran it. Unfortunately, it gets to the screen where it is attempting to quarantine the problems to get rid of them, and Ad-Aware freezes in the middle of the quarantine and doesn't finish. Thank you very much for any help.
Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Here are links to help configure Spybot and Adaware for maximum effectiveness:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Thank you so very much for responding.

So that you know what transpired before your reply — before you responded, I ran Trojan Hunter, and it found and removed 5 Trojans (Cool Web Search and a couple of others). I also ran CWShredder, and it found a number of hits, and deleted them.

I configured Ad Aware, as you recommended, according to that website and ran it again, and it still froze in that same spot (as it was trying to quarantine items — the items shown were Cool Web Search, IBIS Toolbars, and some Cookies). Just in case something was strange with the download, I uninstalled it, downloaded from a different site from the other time yesterday, and tried it again. Still it froze up.

Okay, here is the new log.

Thank you again!
Well isn't that bizarre??!!??

The log is "clean", but Adaware still freezes??

If you're interested in removing things you don't need running, here's a few suggestions:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr_.exe

Can be ininstalled via the Control panel. If you do, reboot after to complete the uninstall.

These can be "checked" with Hijack This!:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Then click "Fix checked".

Other optional items are:
——————————————————–

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe

Read this link
——————————————————–

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PE2CKFNT SE] C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead Photo Express 2 SE\ChkFont.exe

Read this link
——————————————————–

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MediaFace Integration] C:\Program Files\Fellowes\MediaFACE 4.0\SetHook.exe

Read this link
——————————————————–

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe"

Read this link

All of those are valid prorams that you can start manually if you need the service they provide.

But you can also "check" any of those with Hijack This!, then click "Fix checked" and reboot.

I have a suggestion for you to try the help Adaware along.

My guess is that something is lurking in a "temp" folder somewhere.

Please try this:

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Navigate and delete all the files in the following folders.

DON'T DELETE THE FOLDERS, JUST ALL THE FILES INSIDE THEM.

C:\Windows\Temp <–this folder

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp <–this folder

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp <–this folder

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files <–this folder

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files <–this folder

You can also clean out all the files here:

C:\Windows\Prefetch <–this folder

Read about it here:

Windows prefetch

Then empty the recycle bin, boot in normal mode, and run Adaware to see if that helps.
:)
Okay, I did do all of the suggested actions, and I cleared out all history from each user's browser. Then I ran Ad-Aware again, and things are great. Thank you so very much. Anything else I should do? The only problem I'm having now is that I can't get on *this* website or these forums at all a *lot* of the time (I've been trying off and on all day). It comes up as "page cannot be displayed" for hours and hours; I haven't had a problem with any other websites, though. Now, for no particular reason, it seems, I can get all over the forums here. (Maybe the site was down?) Thank you again. :D Now I feel better about the kids being able to use the computer.
The forum has been "up" all day, as far as I know.

I'm going to post my standard list of "things to help prevent future infections".

Please go ahead and post a new Hijack This! log file (just to be sure nothing has slipped back in), and if I see anything in it, I'll respond. Otherwise we'll call this one "solved".

If your "Page cannot be displayed" error is persistant, let me know. I don't normally close "solved hijacks" for about a week.

I am pleased the forums here at TomCoyote.org have been of assistance.

GOD bless you and yours!!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

I'm sorry to bother you, but we are still having trouble.

I continue to have trouble opening this site with my post in it (had trouble yesterday and the day before; I was out of town for a couple days earlier in the week), but I got it to work tonight.

I think the trojan files Cool Web Search are still in the computer. The Trojan Hunter keeps coming up with two of them and with Weatherbug trojan file. (No matter how many times it fixes them.) This time, they were labeled C:/System Volume Information\_restore. I think the numbers were ones that we deleted in my process, too.

Something started hijacking the browser again the same way. How can I keep that from happening?

Please make/post a new log file in this thread, and also I need the "full path names" (i.e. "C:\windows\virus.exe" of the files that Trojan Hunter is complaining about.
:)
Okay, thanks. Here is the new Hijack This log.

I could not get on here for days and days. I finally was able to get on the chat and Coyote helped me to put the forums into the HOSTS file so that I could get back here.

He also helped me put the news/satire site crooksandliars.com into the HOSTS file to attempt to prevent its hijacking — but it still goes (every single time, and other websites go, too) to one IP address: 69.50.190.131 This site has all different pages that come up under it — each time, different pages, all porn.

In the interim before I got on the chat, I learned some more, and installed some more helps for some of this. The ones you suggested on your last note were all done.

I also got Mozilla Firefox hoping that would help; but it didn't prevent the hijacking.

In addition, I tried doing the emptying all the temp files and prefetch again.

Anyway, thank you again, and here's the logfile.

But. according to your profile, you're on the East Coast. Is that right?

If so, I wonder why your Internet is routed to the west coast?

I see no mlaware in the log file.

Does anything at the place the IP address traces to look familair?

Who is your Internet Service provider?
On the plus side, we are not getting quite as many hijacks, and Adaware and Spybot S&D are both working fine (Adaware is not freezing up anymore).
This company/address does not look at all familiar to me for any reason. I have no idea why certain browser addresses that we try to put in, start to come, then redirect to those websites. You're right; we're in the East. Is there a way to block that particular address from being allowed on the computer? Thank you again.
I beleive you're the victim of an "O17" hijack.

These (from the log) probably aren't right:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{AFB87EEF-ACC8-4ACE-91E0-929C5F4DE68A}: NameServer = 69.50.166.94,69.31.80.244

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{E9145760-613D-4BAA-A140-4B26797E46C0}: NameServer = 69.50.166.94,69.31.80.244

But you can't just "fix" them or you will have no Internet access.

That's why I wanted to know what general area of the country you were in, and your Internet service provider (which I still don't know).

I wasn't being "nosey". I need to do some research as to what to change those IP addresses to.

:)
