Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

You have a tricky hijacker that will take special steps to remove.

Please print this page now to be sure you follow all the directions.

It's very important that you follow the directions.

Windows is very unforgiving when it comes to the registry.

Click here to download and install Registrar Lite.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Run Reglite, and paste the BOLD text below into Reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Double-click "Appinit_Dlls" value in right pane. And look in the 'Value' box at the bottom of the new pane.

The value should contain: C:\Windows\System32\mad.dll.

IF "mad.dll' is NOT in the 'Value' box, STOP here, and let me know.

Close that "new pane".

Once you get past here, you MUST finish or you'll screw up the reigstry.

Right-click on the Windows key in the left pane and rename it to Windows2. Then double-click "Appinit_Dlls" value in right pane once more.

Then erase the data in the 'Value' box at the bottom of the new pane.

Click 'Apply' and 'OK' to set.

Right-click on the Windows2 key in the left pane and rename it back to Windows.

Close Reglite.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

c:\windows\system32\mad.dll <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode.

Go to:

Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Program

Remove:

Media Access

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Thank you very much for taking the time to write that up. I did everything you asked until I got to the part that said The value should contain: C:\Windows\System32\mad.dll I had to stop there because the value didn't say that whole thing, it only said mad.dll So I won't do anything until you tell me what to do next or if I should keep going on. Thanks.
That's close enough. That's the hijacker on your system. It just doesn't have the "full path name" included. Please continue. :)
here it is

Just a couple of "cleanup" items left.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {82315A18-6CFB-44a7-BDFD-90E36537C252} - (no file)

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot.

Did you find and delete:

C:\windows\system32\mad.dll <— file

How are things working for you now?
Alright I did everything you said sucessfully. and my computer seems to be running a little bit better but i dont expect it to run that much better since it is prett hot right now. But thanks a lot for everything.
I'm glad the forums here at TomCoyote.org have been of assistance.

Unless you post in here again, I'll consider this one "solved".

I usually wait about a week before closing my threads.

You might want to try Spybot & Adaware. They can find things HJT misses.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

And if you have the time, a few free online virus scans:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

GOD bless!!!
M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

THanks alot for your assitance i hope to see you again when i have other things in my computer that i don't want. THanks a lot.
