I hope your suggestions help out come computer issues I've been having. Thank You! HelloKitty123 :)
Just a little cleanup left…

First, please go to:

Start > Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit (or click OK)

In the Name column in the next screen look for:

.NET Framework Service

it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, look in the Path to execuatble box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one. BE SURE!

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O23 - Service: .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

I'll wait to hear back from you to see if there is any more I should do. I appreciate all the help you have given me. Very clear instructions! Thanks a million.
You seem to have contracted some sort of "search helper" since your last post.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R3 - URLSearchHook: UB Class - {00000000-15D9-4736-AB29-131578A45F2B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsrchc3.dll

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

c:\windows\system32\wsrchc3.dll <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
OK, I did that last step. Now for my question, how do you know which files to delete when you run Hijack This? Also, when my computer reboots, I keep getting a popup ad that says "Fastclick.Media"…any suggestions how I can get rid of this one? Also, what is your opinion on the Bearshare program if your familiar with it. Is it loaded with adware and spyware that you know of? My child downloaded that and Im not sure whether its best I delete it. Thanks for any suggestions. Heres my new log file:

Removed extra line breaks in log - it was driving me batty :weee:

Now for my question, how do you know which files to delete when you run Hijack This?

Join the classroom here, and find out. It takes good training, and experience to interpret "the good, the bad, and the ugly" in a log file.

Also, what is your opinion on the Bearshare program if your familiar with it. Is it loaded with adware and spyware that you know of?

Read about "Bearshare":

Bearshare

I say NUKE IT!!!

If you "share files" you can also share the virii/trojans/worms that can infect them.

That means you're only as "safe" as your antivirus keeps you.

What if you download an infected file (infected with a new virus), but your antivirus company doesn't have the fix/prevention for it yet?

Jesus said,"Thou shalt not put the LORD thy GOD to the test".

When it comes to computers, I say,"Thou shalt not put thy antivirus to the test unnecessarily".

Try installing/running Spybot and Adaware and see if your "Fastclick.Media" pop-up is fixed. I don't see anything active in the log to cause that.

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

Let me know if this helps. :)

Hi Micah,
OK, it sure sounds like Bearshare isn't a favorite to be keeping around.
I run Adware on a daily basis. I just downloaded the Spybot Search and Destroy and it said: Congratulations you have no threats at this time. :)
It appears you have helped me to clean up this system quite well.
I posted another subject under the computer issues section and a user suggested that I let you know of my problem as you have been helping me solve these other issues. I stated I just hated to bother you with any more problems because you were being so helpful already. If you dont mind, I will tell you of this other problem.
When my system sits "idle" for a period of time, we go to double click on AOL to open it and it freezes and were forced to reboot every time. This computer gets shared with my kids, so we all sign off from the internet when were finished. Thats why all the sign on, sign off sessions. Were really tired of rebooting every time we go to use the computer. As you know, I have Windows XP and AOL(9.0). We use Verizon DSL to connect to the internet. I have reloaded AOL multiple times, this does not solve it. I also have the Linksys Wireless Router box. Ive tried resetting the dsl modem and the router box but that doesnt permanently fix this problem either.
Would you happen to know what causes this to freeze up? I truly appreciate all of your help. My computer certainly shows the difference. Thank you.
Have you ever tried to just end AOL with the task manager, then start it again instead of rebooting.

When it "hangs", try this:

1. Push these 3 keys at the same time: . The task manager will appear on the screen.

2. In the task manager window, click on Image name. This sorts the running processes alphabetically.

3. Find waol.exe in the list. Click it to highlight it, then click End process.

Then try to strart AOL again.

I don't see anything in the log that would cause freezing, but I will research it in more detail this evening.

Another thing we could try is to remove unnecessary processes you have running.

Try the fix (bandaid?) above first & we'll go from there.

I certainly will give that a try. The processes running for AOL are:

AOLServiceHost.exe
AOLHOS~1.EXE
AOLDial.exe
waol.exe
AOLacsd.exe
aoltray.exe

Should I end all those processes before clicking on AOL?

It's showing I presently have 43 running processes. Im sure their are needless ones running but I wouldnt know. My daughter has a laptop and she has been told she has too many running processes as well but I havent touched it as I didnt know which ones to end. But dont they all come back on once you reboot? Or is there a way to permanently disable them from running?

Thanks for being so patient with me. :)
The ONLY one you want to end when AOL freezes is this one:

waol.exe

Just for "grins & giggles", after you boot the PC next time, use the task manager to end these:

realsched.exe

qttask.exe

NoAds.exe

That last one is a process that blocks advertisement banners in Yahoo Messenger.

Do you even have that on your machine?

Anyway, "end" those 3 after the next reboot and see if AOL is more stable after long idle times.
:)

I will give that a try. I do have yahoo messenger on here but I dont think anyone uses it anymore. Is that all NoAds is good for is the banners on that messenger? I will see what happens from here. Thanks!
Hello Micah,

I want to thank you so very much for all the help you have provided me on my computer issues. My computer is running beautifully! All those pop-ups are gone! Well for now anyhow. I will keep my fingers crossed.

I tried the suggestion you gave me of ending waol.exe when aol freezes. It works! Why aol is freezing is beyond me. I reloaded it so many times, so it apparently isnt a software issue.

I hope in the future if I have to return here with another issue, that your around!!! :) :D

I know my daughters laptop is running very slow. Would it pay me to post her Hijack This Log or is that a whole other issue?

Once again……thanks a million for all you've done. Means alot to me.

HelloKitty123
I am pleased the forums here at TomCoyote.org have been of assistance.

Please go ahead and post the log from the laptop into this thread and I'll take a peek at it.
:)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
