After numerous sweeps, using SpyBot, AdAware, CWShredder, McAfree Virusscan 9, Avert Stinger, in safe mode and regular, we continue to find Backdoor AZX logged into a file as follows: C:\windows\system32\rdssrv.exe
Following is the Hijack This log.
What do we do to eradicate this trojan from our computer?
Thanks,
Calpurnia1

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Maybe it's not a virus infected file, but a "false positive" from your AV?

Read this thread

Maybe submit that file here:

Kaspersky Online File Checker

For a 2nd opinion?

Please post back and let me know what the Kaspersky scan told you.

:)
Thanks for the suggestions. I visited both sites. On Kaspersky, as soon as I browsed and highlighted the infected file, I got a pop-up from my McAfee AV saying it had detected the Backdoor AZX, and cleaned it, but I needed to reboot the computer to finalize the process. As I hadn't completed Kaspersky online virus scanning yet, I declined the restart and hit "submit" on Kaspersky…I noticed a brief running bar at the bottom of the screen suggesting Kaspersky was operating, but immediately the Kaspersky window where I had entered the file name went blank…and no message regarding file status was received. I have tried this four times with the same result. Also, two of the four times, I did hit restart on the McAfee pop-up and twice I opted not to but then later attempted to restart manually. In both cases when I hit restart on McAfee pop-up, I got a blue error message screen saying that a major problem had been encountered and Windows was being shut down to prevent damage to the system. The other two times, when I attempted to restart, the computer hung up on the "saving settings" screen and I had to manually poweroff. So, something is still amiss. At any rate, each time I have restarted the computer McAfee says it has again found the Backdoor virus. What next? Thanks for your help, by the way…this is a very frustrating virus. :(
Maybe this is a dumb question, but the file in question:

C:\windows\system32\rdssrv.exe

Isn't necessary for Windows to run.

Have you tried to delete in manually?

If you do that, does it return after a reboot?
Wasn't sure if the file was necessary so hadn't tried manual deletion. Will do so later today and let you know what happens on reboot. Thanks!
Yes, it returned after the reboot. Initially, I couldn't delete – error message said Access is denied because the file was in use or disk full, etc. So, I ran Trojan Remover which enabled the file removal. rdssrv.exe then disappeared from the file roster. Rebooted, ran McAfee VirusScan and no virus was found. Did a hard shut down, waited 20 secs or so, started up and ran VirusScan again…same file, same location was detected. Verified it by going into My Computer. Any other options? ???
One thing to try…

If you navigate to:

C:\windows\system32\rdssrv.exe

What does it say in the "bubble" that pops-up when you put your cursor on that file?

If part of the bubble says: Company: Microsoft Corporation

Can you get your antivirus to ignore that file?

Have been trying to resolve by backtracking again with Microsoft and McAfee.  Still no success, although McAfee wanted link to my hijackthis thread, so will need to reopen the case, please.

Michah and VA1776, you might be interested in this thread, if you haven't seen it yet.

No resolution there but it shows the file trying to connect to

energy.to.kg
www.narod.ru
smtp.mail.ru

VA1776, if you can please put the file in a password protected zip and send it to randsscripts a t comcast dot net
Thank you.

Micah, this is still your fix, I'll help out if I can.
If it doesn't say Company: Microsoft Corporation in the "bubble", lets' try some stronger medicine.

Click here to download Ewido security suite - it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

After the definitions have been updated, close Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Now, run Ewido, then:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin (do not open any folder's or open the windows control panel while the scan is in progress).
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report.txt file to your desktop.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" the report.txt file from the Ewido scan, into this thread. :)

I suppose a new Hijack This! log would be a good thing to see as well.
Thanks for picking this project up again.
Ran Ewido and report text file follows.
After running Ewido and rebooting, then ran a fresh HijackThis log file which is pasted here as well.
Your help is much appreciated. :)

This looks promising from the Ewido log:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdssrv.exe -> Backdoor.Kyrdor.a : Cleaned with backup

Try your resident virus scan now.
Was about to do that, but first thought I'd see if the file rdssrv.exe had replaced itself in system32 so went to My Computer and looked for the file…sure enough it was there. When I scrolled over it I got a pop up from McAfee saying it had detected the virus in the file and I should reboot to complete the cleaning process. Which is what I have been doing lo these many times. So, there's still a mystery here. I will run a full scan again after rebooting anyway.
Micah, Latest news: following my last post as I was rebooting to complete the McAfee clean process on the infected file, the system instead went to a blue screen with the following in white letters: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Tech info listed the following: ***Stop: 0x0000000A Had to do a hard shut down to turn off the computer and then restart. Will run the scan now, but this seems to be worsening.
:o That doesn't make a lot of sense? The only 3 files Ewido changed (besides cookies) were these: C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\MiniBugTransporter.dll -> Spyware.Wheaterbug : Cleaned with backup C:\WINDOWS\system32\gogotoolsSILAWO9pi.exe -> Spyware.GogoTools : Cleaned with backup C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdssrv.exe -> Backdoor.Kyrdor.a : Cleaned with backup And you deleted the last one and rebooted before…. :(
