I have been getting pop-ups for months and have tried to clean my regsitry and delete all suspicious files and programs but I must be missing something. Can someone look in my log and tell me if there is any funny stuff happening that I should be concerned about?
Thanks.

In any case, everything went smoothly. Here are the logs.
Let me know if they look clean and if not, wjhat else I can do. Thanks again.

You're doing just fine.

I knew the steps provided in my first post would not remove all the malware. It was the steps required to break that particular type of "about:blank" infection.

Now let's go for the rest of the "baddies".

First, go to:

Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

And remove "Elite Bar". It may be called something similar, and not worded exactly like that.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

Micah:
OK, this worked out OK but for some reason I am encountering errors when I try and send mail and yet my recipients are getting the same message every 5 minutes or so. I finally unchecked the box in Outlook Express for checking for mail every 5 minutes, trying to stop it.

A couple of the files or folders did not exist. The rest was no problem getting rid of. So far it seems better but let me take a walk and I'll see when I get back.

Two of the "baddies" have returned, but that's not uncommon given the copious amount of malware you had accumulated.

If they return once more, we have more agressive tools we can use on them.

Let's try Hijack This! one more time.

First, you need to do one thing.

Please go to:

Start > Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit (or click OK)

In the Name column in the next screen look for:

WinTools for IE service

it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, look in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe

That's how to tell you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\winnt\system32\eliteztg32.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\system32\urrlvu.exe reg_run

O23 - Service: WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

C:\winnt\system32\eliteztg32.exe <— file

C:\WINNT\system32\urrlvu.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
OK, here is the latest Log. The two files were not to be found. I did find the urrlvu but wasn't able to delete it but then I went back there and it was gone.

But my Outlook Express is still screwed up now. Keeps putting out the same 4 messages every few minutes. Could this be related? And how can I reset it to default?

Thanks.

Nothing we have done should have interfered with Outlook…

We'll delve into that problem after ALL the malware is gone.

Just that one pesky item is there now….. <_<

Let's try Hijack This! one last time before using a more potent tool.

Boot in "safe" mode FIRST.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\system32\urrlvu.exe reg_run

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

C:\WINNT\system32\urrlvu.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Here is the latest log but it's there again!
I go to the file to delete it and it says I can't delete. That it is in use. My running processes do not list it.
And get this, when I leave and go back to the systme32 folder after trying to delete it, it's not there.
But then the scan tells me it is.
sheesh.

Yeah, I run a scan and it is there. I check it and get it fixed and then go to the WINNT/System32 folder and it is there but I can't delete it. Then I go away and come back to system32 folder and it's gone but when I run a scan it says it is there. It's like a loop that won't stop.
OK.

Let's try a "bigger gun" to kill that pesky item.

Download Killbox from here

Killbox.zip

Then unzip it, BUT DON'T RUN IT YET.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\system32\urrlvu.exe reg_run

Then click "Fix checked".

Close Hijack This!

Run Killbox and paste the next line into the "Full Path of File to Delete" text box.

C:\WINNT\system32\urrlvu.exe

Check the button to the left of "Delete on Reboot".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes".

After the reboot, make another log to see if it is gone.

Post back and let me know. :weee:

Coming right up!!!!

Click here to download ewido security suite - it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

After Ewido is updated:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin (do not open any folders or open the windows control panel while the scan is in progress).
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\system32\urrlvu.exe reg_run

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

C:\WINNT\system32\urrlvu.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HJT log file, and the report.txt file from Ewido, into this thread. :)
Here is the Hijack Log. I need to insert the other into another reply. It says it is too big. But it looks like it is gone, no?

Your HJT log looks EXCELLENT!!!!

:D

Do you still have the problems with Outlook that you mentioned earlier?

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
