Hello pizazz and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus9.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-qus9.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus9.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-qus9.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - Startup: explorer.exe.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Here is my new logfile after doing as requested; sure hope I got it right as my eyes are blurry today. Thank you. pizazz

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
a² Free Trojan Remover

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Alsocom, Thank you very much for your help. I did Reset and Re-enable the Sytem Restore as requested. I also checked on the programs you suggested. Spyware Blaster was current and running. I upgraded to 1.4 version of Spybot S&D and will run a scan tonight. Adaware was current and I scan with it quite often. I checked on ie-spyad and a², but haven't activated them yet. Google Toolbar was active. Firefox (We tried it last year, but husband wanted to go back to IE.) And, of course, I've been running updated MS AntiSpyware and Norton Internet Security 2005. What was it that got past all of this? Thanks again. -pizazz
Additional note: You didn't mention SpywareGuard. I was running that for awhile, but turned it off recently to see if my machine would run faster. Do you think it is a good program to use? Thanks.
They were just low-risk entries. You can read about AlcxMonitor here. The R1 entries are a similar issue where it redirects information to a seperate server before connecting to the Yahoo server.

These are not picked up on by any scanners as they are not a real risk to have on your computer, just unnecessary.

It appears that you keep your computer updated with the latest programs and security patches.

Edit: Replied before I saw your second post.

I recently removed SpywareGuard from my recommended list as there are programs out there that do a better job. You have Microsoft AntiSpyware's Realtime Protection running already or Spybot S&D's Teatimer is another good one. It would not then be necessary to have SpywareGuard any longer. It has been reported by others that having more than one Registry Monitoring program running will slow down the computer, sometimes to the point of making it almost unable to do anything.
I appreciate how you answered my question so thoroughly. I downloaded the a-squared program, but when I went to login, NIS threw up a red-flag about port-blocking (that I don't fully understand) and I was unsure what to do.
