My computer seems to be infected with bloodhound.w32.ep. I can't access any Internet sites, the desktop background has been hijacked, and on control panel I can only choose screen saver. I've tried Norton antivirus, Adaware, and Spybot, but nothing as worked. Please help!

Here is my log file after running the scan from HJT:

A few more details about my problem. I *really* need help.

When launched, my IE browser is redirected to this site: http://www.oneclicksearches.com/, which looks like a Microsoft site but isn't.

A box also pops up which reads: Attention, your PC is infected with spyware (and more…)

The virus appears to be blocking me from accessing Yahoo or Hotmail, but not other sites.

The virus has added official looking icons to the tray in the right hand corner of my screen. These icons then have bubble popups that look like the Microsoft bubbles and say "Your computer is infected!".

Finally, when I access the control panel for Appearance and Themes, I can only select screen savers. The option to change my desktop background is gone. My desktop right now shows a box that reads "Warning You're In Danger All you do with computer is stored….(Long message). Clicking anywhere in that message box brings up a website for AV Gold antivirus software.

I've run Adaware and Spybot numerous times, NAV several times, and from reading other posts, I've tried using Ewido and CCleaner, but nothing seems to be working.
Alpaco,

Welcome to the forum, sorry about the delay, we have more people infected with malware and viruses than we have people to fix them.

If you haven't resolved your issue and still need my assistance, please do this, you may want to print out these instructions

Go to START> CONTROL PANEL> ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS and remove these two programs if present. Do you use Earthlink for an ISP ?? If not, remove Earthlink.

C:\Program Files\EarthLink 5.0\
C:\Program Files\PSGuard\

Run HijackThis SCAN ONLY, put a checkmark in the following entries, close all open windows and browsers and click on FIX CHECKED.

Run a couple of online virus scanners, have them set to AUTO-CLEAN or FIX ALL, besure to post any thing they found and could not fix

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/acti…n_principal.htm

I know this is all a mouthfull but you have an extensive amount of infections on your system. When your done, run HJT and post a new log please.

Ken :D
Ken45,

Thanks so much for the help. Here is new HJT log.

The icons/popups are gone from the system tray in lower right corner, but my desktop background is still hijacked and unable to be changed.

I did not find all the files you asked me to delete: ceres.dll, systb.dll, wupdt.exe, tnmylcn.exe. I did find systb.exe, but wasn't sure it should be deleted, so left it for now. I think I got all the Earthlink and PSguard files. Ran the Panda software scan, but unfortunately clicked close before noting what wasn't fixed. Housetrend wasn't working this morning and now I must go to work. I will try running again tonight. In meantime, here is a new HJT log:

Thanks again.

Alpaco,

Download, install and run the evaluation version of TROJAN HUNTER . Have it scan your system and remove what if finds.
http://www.trojanhunter.com/

Boot into Safemode, run HJT Scan Only and remove these entries

* O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qwoyct] C:\WINNT\System32\tnmylcn.exe
* O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

Delete this file if present
C:\WINNT\System32\tnmylcn.exe <– This file

While in Safemode, run CWShredder again

Reboot normally and try running the virus scanners again, here are 2 more in case the other ones failed.

Alpaco, please bear with me as I will be out of town for the weekend with limited access to a computer. I will alert other people at Tom Coyote to keep an eye on your post.

Then when done, post a new log please

Ken :D
Alpaco,

Are you talking about your desktop wallpaper or your IE startpage when you say it is still hijacked. What page is it taking you to. If it is IE, post the URL so I can see where it is taking you. If it is just your desktop wallpaper, it may be a windows issue not letting you change it.

Try doing this and see if it helps
To get your desktop back,
Go to Start> Control Panel > Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web —–>
Uncheck the offending web page in the window of the Desktop Items display dialog box

I also see that your windows securtiy is real lax, how come you have not kept up with the Windows updates, is there a reason or are you just unaware of them. This is something that we will have to work on after it is deemed that you are free of any malware and such.

Ken :D
Ken, It is my desktop wallpaper now (originally the IE startpage too, but I fixed that problem by reading some other posts). If I follow your steps start ->control panel-> display ->, when the "display properties" dialog box opens, I only have 2 tabs to choose: screensaver and settings. The other tabs no longer exist, which is why I haven't been able to get rid of the offending wallpaper. I also tried going to a photo and right clicking to "save as desktop" but that didn't work either. As for updates, 2 reasons why I did not keep up. One, i got lazy. Two, my computer has this strange set-up (as shipped from the factory) with a split hard drive, so that half my hard drive storage is on C: and half on D:. Initially that was fine, but I soon started running out of space on C: where all program files are. One attempt to download Windows updates left me with numerous 6 MB "hot fix" files and I never knew if I could remove them to free up space or if they needed to remain (they appear under the add/remove program). I wasn't sure if future downloads of updates would do the same thing. A lame excuse, I know, but also just my lack of technical knowledge about how the updates work in terms of using hard drive space. I have tried to remove the split in the hard drive, but haven't figured out how to do it. Sorry this is long post. I'll follow your earlier instructions when I am home tonight. Alpaco
Alpaco,

Look for a program that is pretty popular calledl Partition Magic with it you can repartition those drives.

You may have another infection that we are looking into. If you had all the windows updates, you may have prevented most of these infections.

Will get back to you on Monday

Ken :D
Alpaco,

The infection you have that is causing you problems is called SMITFRAUD. It is a nasty one to get rid of, but here is a fix that has worked for other people with the same infection and they got rid of it successfully.

Lets do this…..

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qwoyct] C:\WINNT\System32\tnmylcn.exe

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Ken :D
Ken, Just so you don't think I"ve disappeared….I'll follow the new set of instructions now. I've also done the previous ones. Then I'll post again. Thanks for the help. Alpaco
Okay, here are the new files you've asked me to post.

The desktop wallpaper problem is now fixed. The tabs are back in the display dialogue box and the screen is blue. I don't seem to have any other problems, at least the ones that first sent me to this board are now fixed. Each time I run one of the online scans it finds things. Not sure if that is just the result of being on the internet and getting new adware infections. The more obvious things seem to be gone, however. Thanks again for all the help.
