:( Today I opened a Popcap.Com game site that I use daily, we received a Trojan Horse Malware as follows:
Filename: http//www.popcap.com/games/popcaploader_v6cab\popcaploa
Malware Win32: Popcap Load [trj] 0527-1,Trojan Horse 07/07/2005

I ran my Avast to get the above file name and moved to Chest as instructed. I was not given a delete file option. I opened the Chest and deleted the file. As instructed shut the system down and rebooted.
Went back to Internet and tried to open Popcap again. Same problem came up. I have now run SpyBot, AdAware, hijackthis, cleaned temp files on SAFEMODE boot, cleaned internet files of cookies and history. Ran Avast and got the same file again, this trojan just will not delete.
I just ran a new copy of hijackthis. here is the file:

Can you tell me which of these files I should repair or fix to help get rid of the Trojan. This is the first one I've had that I was unable to delete using avast.
Thanks Ona585 :)
You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please download HijackThis version 1.99.1 from here. Please delete your current version and extract the new version into its own folder. Once that is done, please post a new HJT log.
In reply to your request for newer version hijack this scan: :) Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

I thought you would like to know I did contact Popcap about this problem, the reply I got was this is an Avast problem. However I have used Avast for over a year with the Popgame in my system so this did not make sense. However the problem did seem to resolve itself after I got their reply.
I deleted McAfee from my system, I thought, because of conflicting problems that were unresolved using their program. Should I delete the ones showing here to completely get rid of McAfee. I find the program unusable by anyone other than an ex-pert such as your group has to resolve problems. Please accept my thanks and keep up the good work. As soon as I get paid on the first I plan on giving a donation to your website, it's worth every penny for the expert help we get.
Thanks once again.

I would recommend uninstalling the McAfee Antivirus as it can cause serious issues to have two antivirus programs running real time together.

As always, donations are welcome and much appreciated! We are glad that you are getting a worthwhile service. Your donations allow us to help others just like you on a continuing basis.
Ok did as instructed, hijack this went as it should, however I am unable to delete the mcvsrte.exe file for McAfee. The message comes back as access denied, check with administrator for password. Since there is no password on this system and I am administrator how do I get this out of the files, all of the McAfee files left in my system search deleted with no problem.

Enclosed is new run of hijack this:

Thanks
The best way to get rid of McAfee would be to uninstall it, not delete the associated files. Are you able to uninstall it from the Add/Remove Programs screen?
I did the uninstall program over a year ago when I realized the McAfee was one of my problems, I thought all the files had removed themselves at that time, so imagine my surprize when they have reappeared. This is the first time I have seen these files in hijack this. As I said the search of the system gave me 4 files, three were internet and deleted with no problem the other I have no idea how to remove since the probram was uninstalled a long time ago. I did uninstall through the Add/Remove Programs using the McAfee uninstall. If it won't hurt to leave it then let me know, but I would prefer to get rid of it completely if possible. Thanks
Do you still have the McAfee software? One way to uninstall McAfee is to reinstall it, then uninstall it agian. Can you try that? McAfee (and most Antivirus vendors) leave files and traces all over the system and manual removal can be difficult.
in reply, no I don't have the Program, it was installed on the hard drive when I bought it. HP does not send recovery disc's unless you have serious problems, I never liked the McAfee and just uninstalled. One of the questions you may be able to answer for me is what to do with these type files that tell you you can't delete because they are password protected. I have had several of these over the years when uninstalling program files, it is very frustrating to those of us who are not computer geeks. I can follow instructions from a geek but don't know how to go into the system and get rid of these type files. Even my brother has been unable to figure out how to do this, and he is a civil engineer and builds his own components and does a lot of his own programs. We just finally gave up. Oh well, so goes it. Maybe it will go away like it did before? Ha, Thanks for your help with this anyway. I appreciate your help today. ona
Ok, well let's see what we can get rid of.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see this site.

Then, run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:
O23 - Service: McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager (mcupdmgr.exe) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdmgr.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: McAfee.com VirusScan Online Realtime Engine (MCVSRte) - Networks Associates Technology, Inc - c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsrte.exe

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" to have HijackThis fix the entries you checked. Try to delete the folder C:\Program Files\McAfee.com.

Reboot your computer into normal mode and post a new HJT log.
Ok, did as instructions said: I was able to delete the folder, however when I closed and rebooted then ran the scan again they reappeared. The folder is no longer there when I do a search of the system. Should I search and delete each file through My computer. HiJack file as follows:

 but thanks anyway for your help. we can only keep trying.
Please run HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service. In the Delete window, type mcupdmgr.exe and press OK. OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer. Do the same for MCVSRte. Reboot your computer and post a new HJT log.
Ok I tried to delete the files, I get a popup window telling me the programs still running or another user is using the files, close these files before deleting. Since McAfee is not running and everything else is closed what do I do now? If I do a search the files show up but you can't delete them because the popup tells me the file I'm writing to is full or password protected. The files can't be full since I have 72% of my hard drive still free. I just defraged Friday and deleted online cookies and files. <_< Sooooooo? What am I doing wrong? It has to be something I'm doing your instructions are very clear. Thanks once again ona
Sorry I wasn't very clear, I went to hijack this and followed your instructions up through entering the file name, at that point when you press OK I got the message that this program was running and the file could not be deleted. I think at this point it may be better to not persue trying to get these files out of the system. I wish I was more versed in computer talk so you could be more technical but I am afraid I am going to have problems if I keep messing in the files without knowing exactly what I'm doing. I really appreciate your help with what we already did, I did get rid of the popcap.com trojan and that was most important. My husband's game is working and I am not showing any viruses of any kind so I may be ok. I feel safe doing my research and he is happy with his games. However if I have any further problems I will let you guys know. thanks once again. Ona
