With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.


Step 2
Download and install CleanUp!. Here is the info page on it.
  • Click Start > All Programs > "CleanUp!" > "CleanUp!".
  • A dialog will appear. Click on the button labeled "CleanUp!".
  • Reboot.

Step 3
Reboot normally. I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to re-enable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start < run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply to this thread. You may now uncheck all of those items again in msconfig.

Only one line in the new log that I'm not sure about. Do you know what it is? Right click on the file and choose 'properties', than on the 'version' tab note what the "Company" and "Version" are.

Hi Alan, Sorry, I was away on business for awhile. I got your message but I can't locate the file that you asked me to look at. I ran a search and the computer couldn't locate it either. Am I doing something wrong? As far as how the computer is running, there definitely is an improvement. Thank you very much. One lingering problem is that sometimes, but not always, it takes forever to start, as much as 10 minutes sometimes. When that happens, I'll get this window that says: NT ON-ACCESS SCANNER service. encountered a problem and needed to close. I have no idea what this thing is, but it really slows up the comp at Startup. Do you have any idea what this is? Thank you again for your help. Steve

What information I can gather on that error message is that it is caused by McAfee Antivirus. Here is a good post on it with several possible solutions, mostly asking the users to make sure to update to the most current scanning engine. If you can not resolve this issue by doing that, I suggest contacting McAfee Customer Service for support.

Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Now look in the C:\Winnt for the file vonnd.exe again and let me know if it is present.

Post a fresh HijackThis log again making sure everything is enabled in Msconfig as described in the previous post.

I did what you said as far as setting the computer to show all files. Then I manually looked in WINNT and also had the computer run a search for that vonnd.exe file, but to no avail. Anyway, here's the new logfile. let me know what you think. Thanks

It appears that this is just an orphaned entry and the file was deleted by another scanner. I just did not want to delete something and find out later that it was a valid item.

Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QMeF] C:\WINNT\vonnd.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Reboot the computer and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know how the computer is behaving. If everything is working well. I'll give you some recommendations to better secure the computer.

Hi Alan, here's the new logfile. The computer is definitely running faster than it was, although not as fast as when it was new. Do you think that additional RAM may solve this problem? Your new log appears clean. :)

One thing I see wrong on your computer that could be responsible for the slow down is that you have two Antivirus programs running at the same time. This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. I strongly suggest you do one of the following :
(1) configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning, and leave the rest disabled most of the time
(2) go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.


Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.


I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
a² Free Trojan Remover

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.
