Your system has an infection called About:Blank, which will take several posts to clean out.

First, you are running TeaTimer and Microsoft AntiSpyware, and both of them will interfere wtih parts of this fix…so they must be disabled for the duration:

To Disable MS AntiSpyware

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware

To disable TeaTimer

Open Spybot Mode | Advanced
Tools | Resident and untick the box for TeaTimer to disable it.
Exit Spybot.
In the Windows system tray, if the TeaTimer icon is still present, right-click it and exit the TeaTimer.
Please leave TeaTimer disabled until we are finished fixing your machine.

Once taht is done…here are the first instructions for About:Blank.

Step#1:Getting Ready

(the reason Wordpad was chosen is that Notepad is sometimes deleted by this variant)

Please save these instructions to WordPad so that you have them accessible while following the steps. You also may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available.

After downloading the tools, you must disconnect from the internet totally, because staying connected while fixing will prevent the fix from working. Also please keep Internet Explorer and Outlook Express closed throughout as opening either will reinstall the infection.

To replace Internet Explorer to use during this fix, please use Internet Explorer once to download and install FireFox, to be used as your alternate browser throughout this fix.

Close Outlook Express and Internet Explorer for the duration of this fix

Please start by downloading the tools you will need to clean this infection. If you have a problem or question with any please continue to follow the list step by step to the end and ask the questions when you are asked to reply. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you finally reply.

Step#2:Show All Hidden Files

Windows 2000

* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Step#3:Download CWShredder

1. Please Download the most recent version of CWShredder, from CWSInstall.exe

2. Check for Updates but please Do NOT use it yet

Step#4:Download About Buster

1. Please download About:Buster from here: http://www.malwarebytes.biz/AboutBuster5.zip.

2. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster.

3. Check to make sure it is up-to-date. Please Do NOT use it yet

Step#5:Download Registrar Lite

Another program to download is Registrar Lite for use later: Please download Registrar Lite and install it to C:\Program Files\RegLite\ . This is a registry editor that is very easy to use.

Please disconnect from the Internet

Step#6:Disable The Bad Service
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE
  • Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called Workstation NetLogon Service . Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step#7:Stop The Running Processes

(only for Win2k/XP)

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the following processes if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\addar.exe

Step#8:Use HijackThis to Delete About Blank

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\addar.exe <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysmu32.exe <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\unpom.dll <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winoo.dll <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\msxa.exe <– this file

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#9:Cleaning With HijackThis

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

click "fix checked"

Step#10: Backup The Registry

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:(this is making a Registry backup for safety in case of error)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Go to File> Export and and save as (in the C:\Program Files\Registrar Lite (Reglite) folder):

1.) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2.) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

Step#11: Delete the Registry Entries

(Insert the actual combination of letters/numbers from the log into each entry eg: ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I))

3. Copy and paste each line of bold text below into the address bar of Reglite one at a time:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

4. Copy and Paste each line of bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite one at a time:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ [b 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

If you get errors when copying and pasting the above bold entries into RegLite please try replacing the bold text with the following abbreviated line, changed as necessary for each entry eg currentcontrolset001, currentcontrolset002
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
    AND
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_
If this search finds the bad entries please look in the left hand column for the funny looking letter/number combination and if found, right click and choose delete for each entry

Please be cautious in identifying the correct entries in the registry because deleting other entries may cause serious problems with your PC

Step#12:Fixing With CWShredder
  • CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except CWShredder
  • Run the program by clicking 'fix' and letting it fix all CWS remnants.

Step#13:Fixing With About Buster

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.
  • Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory
  • double-click on aboutbuster.exe
  • When the tool opens press the OK button, then Start button, then the OK button
  • then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files.
  • If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • Post the log file in your next reply

Step#14:Saving and Using a Reg File

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Reboot your computer back to normal mode

Step#15:Scan and Post a New HJT log with other logs
  • Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

    Reconnect To The Internet

  • Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.
Thanks
daveai
Hey Daveai,

Followed your last set of instructions. Everything went pretty smoothly. Ran CWShredder and it removed CWS.Look2Me. Here is the AboutBuster5.0 log (ran it twice),

Thanks for your all your help so far,

Aaron
Thanks

Okay…so far so good.

You are running HijackThis from temp files, which is an unsafe location.

Please move your "HijackThis.exe" into a newly created folder (such as C:\HJT) to ensure that backup files are reliably saved. We're eventually going to clean out the tempfiles as part of the fix.

It may be easier to simply download the latest version of HijackThis(v1.99.1) and unzip it into C:\HJT.

You will not be able to continue running HijackThis from: C:\DOCUME~1\Aaron\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 4 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

Now for some more fixing…

1 – First, you are running TeaTimer and Microsoft AntiSpyware, and both of them will interfere wtih parts of this fix…so they must be disabled for the duration:

2 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32
\unpom.dll/sp.html#14044

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32
\unpom.dll/sp.html#14044

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [47.tmp] C:\DOCUME~1\Aaron\LOCALS~1\Temp\47.tmp.exe 1 10001

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [addar.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\addar.exe

O15 - Trusted IP range: 206.161.125.149

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

3 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?), then use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\addar.exe <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\unpom.dll <– this file

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

4 – Then use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\aaron\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

5 – Create a fresh HijackThis log and send it to me in your reply.

Thanks
daveai
Okay….followed your last set of instructions. The only problem i encountered was that the files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\addar.exe and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\unpom.dll

did not exist, so i couldn't delete them. I searched the system for these files but they were not present. Here's my latest HJT log,

Okay….followed your last set of instructions. The only problem i encountered was that the files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\addar.exe and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\unpom.dll

did not exist, so i couldn't delete them. I searched the system for these files but they were not present. Here's my latest HJT log,

Nice work so far :)

Now let's do any needed file repair.

After you reply with the next HijackThis log, we can move on to final cleanup.

Step#1:Restore Deleted System Files

Now we need to see if we need to restore some deleted files:Please check for the following files using the Windows Search Engine:
  • control.exe
  • rundll32.exe
  • wmplayer.exe
  • msconfig.exe
  • notepad.exe
  • shell.dll
  • SDHelper.dll
If any are missing or not working properly then you can download new copies from
Merijn's Files and following the instructions at that site to have them where they belong for your OS.
  • If you are having any difficulty with Notepad, please go to Merijn's Files and choose 'Windows Files' from the menu on the left hand side of the page. Then choose 'Notepad' from the list and download it to C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32
  • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
  • This infection often deletes some system files that need to be replaced. The most frequent one it deletes is shell.dll in Win2K or XP. In XP there are two copies of this file, one in Windows (WINNT) and one in Windows\System32. It does not delete the one in Windows\System so it does not affect Win9x/ME. If you find it missing, please copy the shell.dll from c:\windows\system32\dllcache into both \Windows (WINNT) and Windows\System32 .
  • The other system file which is most frequently deleted is control.exe. Please check to make sure that you have this file and it is the correct size. If not Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to the information at this website. The control.exe is more often deleted in Win9x/ME.
  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button
Step#2:Download CCleaner
  • Download Ccleaner to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on Ccleaner to install the program, with its default settings, selecting language and agreeing to the license agreement.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click Options > Advanced and uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".

    Step#3:Complete An Online AntiVirus Scan

Run an online antivirus scan at:

    Trend Micro-Housecall Online AV

    Reboot

Step#4:Find the Infected Files On Your Hard Drive
    • Navigate to C:\Windows
    • look for files that were created at the approximate time and date as the infection occurred.
    • look for those that end in exe, DAT and DLL and if found, right click on the file and check properties. Legitimate files should be copyrighted by Microsoft
    • if you determine they are bad files, right click on them and choose delete
    • Navigate to C:\Windows\System or C:\Windows\System32 (depending on the OS) and repeat each of the above steps to check for those ending in exe, DAT and/or DLL
    • if the above files will not delete, then make a new folder on your desktop by right clicking on the desktop and choosing New > Folder. Name the folder CWS Files.
    • Move the files from C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System or C:\Windows\system32
to the new folder CWS Files.
Step#5:Using your Windows CD to replace System Files

** In cases where many system files are missing you have no alternative but to have them insert their Windows OS disk and run sfc /scannow from the Run box if able or from Recovery Console if not able to get into windows

Step#6:Scan And Post a New HijackThis Log

    1. Scan again with HijackThis

    2. POST your log file using Add Reply to see what is left to fix.

    Thanks
    daveai
Hey daveai, I followed your last set of instructions up to Step#3:Complete An Online AntiVirus Scan. I'm not quite clear on the procedure at this point. I ran the online scan add found 2440 infections, the majority of the Troj_Agent.NP variety. My question is, do i use this list to delete the files in Step #4 of your instructions? And if so, when i reboot my machine won't this Trend Micro Housescan window be lost??? Aaron
Thanks. Do nt worry about trying to find the files that Housecall listed…we are expecting Housecall to delete those. To confirm that happened…reboot and rerun the scan, again allowing it to clean anything it finds. Don't worry about the file lookups in Step #4 at this time. Send a new HJT log when your are done. Thanks daveai
Hey daveai,

I retried the scan with Housecall and asked for a clean of the infected files. However, a message was displayed saying:

Removal of an Infection failed!
HouseCall was unable either to clean or delete an infection from your system!

Most of the identified files in the scan were not cleaned. I rebooted and rescanned and again the files were unable to be cleaned.

Here is my latest HJT logfile…

Okay…I'd like to try a different approach on the Anti-virus step.

1 – Please follow the instructions provided below, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

First:
Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved when you reply to htis message.

2 – Also, reboot normally and run at least two of these online virus scans (Or more if you wish.), reboot after each scan:

Bitdefender<<
RAV<<
eTrust<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful

Housecall<<
Panda ActiveScan<<
If the above find things to clean, please re-run them to be sure the infections are gone. If not, please tell me what could not be cleared out.

Thanks
daveai
Hey daveai,

Ran Ewido and was able to detect and delete those files which Trend Micro-Housecall Online AV could not clean. Rebooted and rescanned with ewido and no infections were found. I then ran scans with Etrust and Housecall online scanners, deleting more files. Subsequent rescans revealed no more infections. Below is the new HJT log. Tried to post the entire ewido logfile but the forum won't allow me to send such a long reply. Thanks for all your help so far….

Thanks for the reply and update. Ya gotta love Ewido for cleaning out all that garbage :) Please send me the HJT log again, with a small change… In Notpad, use 'Format' and uncheck 'Word Wrap'. That will eliminate all thoe extra blank lines and make the logfile much easiere for me to review. Thanks daveai
