Go to Add/Remove programs and remove:

Internet Optimizer

Then reboot.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.

MOVE HijackThis into this folder, and off the desktop.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{00D6A7E7-4A97-456f-848A-3B75BF7554D7} - (no file)

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

c:\program files\internet optimizer <— FOLDER

c:\windows\alchem.exe <— file

c:\windows\web\related.htm <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

This doesn't solve your original problem about missing the file "IVPNMon.vxd" at every boot.

Please download Bill James's Registry Search Tool

Run it. If your antivirus gives you a warning, allow the script to run.

Paste this is the search box:

IVPNMon.vxd

Post the results in this thread along with your new HJT log file.

An "optional" fix:
Please go here and read about:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CriticalUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup

You may want to disable it.

also Micah 6:8 I did not find the alchemy .exe file in windows. I did find the item referenced by the registry search tool. I really havent worked with the registry before, but I can delete this entry or do I need a another tool to fix it for me? Your help is most appreciative. Jonathan
onr more thing if you dont mind. thats a lot of processes running. Which ones can I stop at startup? I dont use half of them. Thanks.
These are things that you can "live without":

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Openwares LiveUpdate] C:\Program Files\LiveUpdate\LiveUpdate.exe

Not required. You can "fix" that with Hijack This!

You would just need to navigate and on that file (C:\Program Files\LiveUpdate\LiveUpdate.exe) BEFORE going to their web site and doing any updating.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCDRealtime] C:\WINDOWS\realtime.exe

You can "fix" this with Hijack This! as well.

Brief description here

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CriticalUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup

See the link in my previous post about turning this off.

O4 - Startup: OpenOffice.org 1.1.4.lnk = C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org1.1.4\program\quickstart.exe

Not required.
Read this link

I'm working on a "reg" file for you to remove your "IPVNMon.vxd" problem. It will be safer that using regedit.

I will post back when I have it.
Yeah I actually kind of figured the open office on and I already did get rid of the critical notification one. Thanks very much for taking time out of your day to help me. I love Hijack this, I have told several friends about it. This particular problem was on my home desktop. I had a problem on my laptop that i also removed using Hijack this. I can see that it takes a bit of know how, to read the logs and know what to remove, so again, thanks. Other than the classroom here for teaching it, can you recommend a learning system for HJT? Jonathan.
I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

We went visiting yesterday afternoon, and after we got back home we had thunderstorms rumbling thru till after midnight. I don't use the PC during electrical storms.

Here is a tutorial for using Hijack This!:

Hijack This! Tutorial

But you really need to go thru some sort of class to learn what is "good, bad, and ugly" (Clint Eastwood please forgive me  ). You can really screw up a PC by "fixing" the wrong things with HJT.

On to your problem:

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IPVNMon]

Save it to your desktop as fixme.reg

Now, the fixme.reg file on the desktop.

You will get a prompt asking you if you are sure you want to merge this into your registry. Say "Yes" (or "Y").

Now reboot. Your "file not found" error should be gone.

You can delete the fixme.reg file off the desktop.

If you want me to see if you have gotten rid of the optional programs, please post another HJT log file.
:)
OK Micah you're the man! or woman! I'm good now. I don't think that there is a need to post a new logfile. You seem to have your work cut out for you by the looks of this forum. Take care. Jonathan
Just between us guys - I'm glad we could help.

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
