Hello to all,
When I scan my computer with AVG free edition it says that I have trojan horses. I've had these for a while, and recently someone hijacked my girlfriend's e-mail account and demanded money to return it. I think this could be because of the trojan horses. I would be verry grateful if someone could help me. I've read the instructions as best as I could (I am not very good with computers) and here is my log that I scanned with HiJackThis:

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

When we have finished and your PC has been determined to be clean, please uninstall Ewido (trial).

Please use the following links to run one, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
    http://be.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
    Microsoft Internet Explorer
    Netscape (6+)
    Mozilla (1+)
    Firefox (all)
    Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
    TrendMicro HouseCall
    eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
    Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
    Reboot when done.

    Then,
Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version and have been updated today. Then run full systems scans as described below.

Install and how to use the NEW Ad-aware SE
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

    Reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Would you please download the Spybot S&D program from here Spybot S&D; and install it.
    • Select Search for updates.
    • Then select all available updates that are displayed in the white box.
    • Select a download mirror nearest your location.
    • Then select Download updates .
    • Shut down and restart Spybot.
    • Select the Search and destroy icon and click on Check for Problems.
    • Delete/fix anything that spybot lists In RED.
    .

Then, please REBOOT, to allow Spybot to finish working.

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then browse to the C:\Window\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then in internet explore click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Then please run Hijack This, copy the log and post it here, along with the log from the EWIDO scan , in this string, using the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Please do not attempt to FIX anything in the fresh log. We need to see the entire log, as it is.
Hello!

Thank you for your help. I tried to follow the instructions as best as I could. One thing that I would like to note is that the House Call could not delete the following things: PE STARTPAGE.MF and TROJ STARTPAG.Q it claimed that they were in use.

The file where they were being used is: C:\Documents and Settings\TunnuTun\ApplicationData\Sun\Java\Ddevelopment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\archive.jar-487b52a0-6c9b277.zip

I performed to Hijack logs the first:

Hello toomanyhorses

Download the stand-alone version of CWShredder 2.12
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

Please be sure to update the program.

Then close every window, disconnect from Internet and doubleclick the CWShredder icon on your Desktop.
Click Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Next:
Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

The following are OPTIONAL fixes:
If you do not know and trust the following RO entry, it can be fixed with Hijack This.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.haaretz.com/

The following is a resources hog and can be started manually, after fixing this entry with HJT, if you wish.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log.
Hello Piatan,

Thank you very much for the help. When I tried the Shredder it found nothing to fix. I deleted what you told me from the Hijack, but did not delete what you told me was optional.

Toomanyhorses
Hello Piatan, I conducted a virus scan with my AVG Free Edition which is what detected the trojan horses in the first place. It let me know that I still have the horses. Here is a copy of the test results of the infected areas: File: BlackBox.class Result/Infection: Virus identified Java/ByteVerify C:\DocumentsandSettings\TunnyTun\ApplicationData\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\archive.jar-487b52a0-6c9b2770.zip:\BlackBox.class Trojan horse Startpage.10.AH C:\DocumentsandSettings\TunnyTun\ApplicationData\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\archive.jar-487b52a0-6c9b2770.zip:\winmodem.exe Trojan horse Startpage.9.BB C:\DocumentsandSettings\TunnyTun\ApplicationData\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\archive.jar-487b52a0-6c9b2770.zip:\rundll32.exe Maybe this will help shed more light on the problems. All the best, toomanyhorses
Hello toomanyhorses;

You will want to read the following text, before proceeding with the fixes.
You may also want to copy and paste it into a Notepad file, to place on your desktop, to read as you work. Doing so may prevent any false steps.
Please follow all steps in the order given.

We need to search for and delete a file.

First,
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Then, click on Start, Go to Search, Click on Files and Folders. Then, Click on All Files and Folders, then enter the following shown dark below into the window that pops up. Highlight each found, right click and select "delete". Then exit the program and empty your recycle bin.

verifierbug.class

Next:

To clear the java cache:

* From the Start button, click Settings > Control Panel
* In the Control Panel, open the "Java Plug-in Control Panel"
* Select the Cache Tab
* Click the Clear button inside the Cache Tab, which will clear your JRE cache directory

Please proceed with the rest of the fix, even if you were unable to complete the step outlined just above.

Then use this link to uninstall MS java. Scroll down the page until you find the automatic uninstaller and follow all directions that apply.

http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/java.php

Then, use the following link to download Sun Java and follow all directions.

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Then,
To Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Then, close every window, disconnect from Internet and doubleclick the CWShredder icon on your Desktop.

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Then, please REBOOT and enable hidden files.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution : It is not recommended to use the 'Issues' tab as it is known to find legitimate items.
  • After it has completed it's process, click Exit.
Next:
One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK

Then go to Windows update. It seems you have a very old virus, for which a MS Critical Updates patch has long been available.

The following will link you to the Microsoft update site.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5co…t.aspx?ln=en-us

Reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log.
Hello Piatan,

Once again thanks for the help. A couple notes. When you told me two fix the three things on hijack - those specific three things did not exist so I just continued to the next step. Also the cws shredder didn't find anything. Finally, when I did the windows update it said I was all up to date.

Here is the first hijack log:

Thanks for all the help,

toomanyhorses
Hi toomanyhorses;
Yes, please do hide those files and folders.

It is only necessary to post one Hijack This logfile, which would be taken after you have completed all the steps outlined.

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

O16 - DPF: {CE8267C2-D41A-4A50-A69D-F32B5C289F14} (FileOpenInstaller) - http://64.106.242.160/0705/FileOpen.CAB

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

With that done, your Hijack This log shows to be clean.

How is everything ? Getting any bad reports from Ad-Aware, etc.?
Glad we could be of help.
