HELP!

I have read several threads regarding the "Trojan.desktophijack.b" Virus, and am very sorry to have to add another one to the numbers. I hope you all can understand and help me out.

I do not know how I got this virus, but I was informed of it several days ago when Norton Antivirus displayed the following popups:

Object Name: C:\WINNT\system32\OLEADM.dll
Virus Name: Trojan.Desktophijack.B
Action Taken: Unable to repair this file.

Upon pressing "OK" I received another similar message:

Object Name: C:\WINNT\system32\OLEADM.dll
Virus Name: Trojan.Desktophijack.B
Action Taken: Access to the file was denied.

And I also get the same messages regarding "C:\WINNT\system32\WININET.dll".

I have searched (Yahoo-ed, Google-ed) various sites for fixing this problem, and have tried many of their methods, but none seem to have completely worked (I hope I haven't permanently screwed up my computer doing so).

Thus, I came to this site, and earnestly hope you all can help me. I really do not want to have to reformat my computer.

Sorry for the long background, but here is my HijackThis log:

Thank you very much, and I hope you can quickly help me solve this problem :)
Hello drgnasd, welcome to the TC.

Step#1:Getting Ready

(the reason Wordpad was chosen is that Notepad is sometimes deleted by this variant)

Please save these instructions to WordPad so that you have them accessible while following the steps. You also may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available.

After downloading the tools, you must disconnect from the internet totally, because staying connected while fixing will prevent the fix from working. Also please keep Internet Explorer and Outlook Express closed throughout as opening either will reinstall the infection.

To replace Internet Explorer to use during this fix, please use Internet Explorer once to download and install FireFox, to be used as your alternate browser throughout this fix.

Close Outlook Express and Internet Explorer for the duration of this fix

Please start by downloading the tools you will need to clean this infection. If you have a problem or question with any please continue to follow the list step by step to the end and ask the questions when you are asked to reply. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you finally reply.

Step#2:Show All Hidden Files

Please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.
http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip

Step#3:Download CWShredder

1. Please Download the most recent version of CWShredder, from CWSInstall.exe

2. Check for Updates but please Do NOT use it yet

Step#4:Download About Buster

1. Please download About:Buster from here: http://www.malwarebytes.biz/AboutBuster5.zip.

2. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster.

3. Check to make sure it is up-to-date. Please Do NOT use it yet

Step#5:Download HSfix.zip and Registrar Lite

1 . Download HSfix.zip and unzip it to your desktop:

http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/regfiles/HSfix.zip

It will probably create a folder for itself (it does on my XP system)

Please Do NOT use it yet

2. Another program to download is Registrar Lite for use later: Please download Registrar Lite and install it to C:\Program Files\RegLite\ . This is a registry editor that is very easy to use.

Please disconnect from the Internet

Step#6:Disable The Bad Service
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE
  • Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called Workstation NetLogon Service . Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.
Step#7:Stop The Running Processes

(only for Win2k/XP)

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the following processes if they exist:

C:\WINNT\system32\ntrs.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\ietb32.exe

Step#8:Use HijackThis to Delete About BlankOpen HJT and select Misc Tools, select delete a File on Reboot.

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINNT\system32\ntrs.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\ietb32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\appvf32.dll

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#9:Cleaning With HijackThis

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

click "fix checked"

Step#10: Backup The Registry

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:(this is making a Registry backup for safety in case of error)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Go to File> Export and and save as (in the C:\Program Files\Registrar Lite (Reglite) folder):

1.) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2.) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

Step#11: Delete the Registry Entries

Then double-click on the HSfix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

You should get a message reporting that the changes were successfully merged.

Step#12:Fixing With CWShredder
  • CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except CWShredder
  • Run the program by clicking 'fix' and letting it fix all CWS remnants.
Step#13:Fixing With About Buster

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.
  • Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory
  • double-click on aboutbuster.exe
  • When the tool opens press the OK button, then Start button, then the OK button
  • then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files.
  • If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • Post the log file in your next reply
Step#14:Reboot Sytem normally

Reboot your computer back to normal mode

Step#15:Scan and Post a New HJT log with other logs[
[*]Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

Reconnect To The Internet

[*]Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.
Thank you so much! I will first post what problems I encountered during the procedure, and then my AboutBuster and then HijackThis logs. Some of the problems are very minor, but some may have some significance.

1. I did not quite understand what you meant by "Close Outlook Express and Internet Explorer," as there was no bottom-right taskbar item or system process, so I simply did not open Internet Explorer or Outlook Express. I hope that was sufficient.
2. "xphidden" is not simply for Windows XP, right? That is the impression I first got when linked to it and when I downloaded it.
3. Anyway, when I double-clicked "xphidden.exe" it did not use the word "merge" but rather said "add these values to the system registry." I'm sure they still mean the same thing, right?
4. There was no "Workstation NetLogon Service" under the "Services" of "Administrative Programs." There was, however, a "Workstation," so I disabled that. I also wrote down the path name, but did not see where I was supposed to delete it in your instructions.
5. I did not see either ntrs.exe or ietb32.exe running as system processes.
6. When I attempted to delete the following files using HijackThis (Step #8), it said that I would have to restart my computer. However, I clicked no for all three times and continued on without restarting my computer. Did this affect anything?
7. For the cleaning with HijackThis (Step #9), the ".dll" file that was in the registry keys was NOT "ipghv.dll" but rather something like "fghiv.dll" or something. And in my recent HijackThis log that you will see below, it is still there, just under a different name again. I deleted the "fghiv.dll" registry keys, however.
8. Also in Step #9, the "023 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service (11….." was instead called "023 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper (11…."
9. In Step #10, when I typed the bold text into the address bar, in the description it said that the CurrentControlSet was not set, and that it would use ControlSet001 or something for the set (sorry, I do not remember exactly what it said).
10. In Step #11, once again the changes were not "merged" but were "added into the entry."
11. In Step #13, when I double clicked on aboutbuster.exe, I did not need to click "OK", "Start", and then "OK." Instead, it was simply "Begin Removal." Is that fine? Also, it did not ask for a second pass.
12. There were some problems when booting up. At the startup, after I logged in, the following error message appeared:
"Cannot find the file 'C:\WINNT\system32\ietb32.exe' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available."
13. Another message also popped up during startup:
"Steam.exe (main exception): Unable to start Steam Engine: *SteamStartEngine(0x12e890) failed with error 200: Connection Reset, WinSockError 10054 "Connection reset by peer" "
If you didn't already know, Steam.exe is the engine/program used by Valve to play such games as Half-Life, Counterstrike, Team Fortress, etc. However, I'm sure this is unimportant.
14. When my computer started up and loaded, an Internet Explorer page with the address "about:blank" automatically opened.
15. Also, as I was typing this reply another error message popped up:
"WARNING: Windows Firewall detected suspicious network activity on your computer. Malicious software codes try to steal your privacy information, such as credit card numbers, electronic mail accounts, financial data or passwords.

Do you want to learn how to protect your computer?"
And of course I clicked "No" because I had received this popup many times recently (due to the virus, I'm sure) and clicking "Yes" did not help.

Anyway, once again I apologize for any trivial/foolish problems I posted up that you might have been offended by; I just wanted to be thorough and precise.

Here is my AboutBuster log:

Once again, thank you SO very much for your help. I really hope we can get rid of this problem soon.
Well that didn't work to well. Lets try this one.

Download CW-Shredder at the link below: (don't run it yet)
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

Download 'SpSeHjfix'. into a folder. (don't run it yet)

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Make sure you know how to boot into - SafeMode

Reboot into safe mode.

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

Now run the Shredder - Hit The FIX button!

Reboot and repeat the process above. Starting with: Reboot into safe mode.

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

run it in safe mode and run it twice
You need to run this part of the process twice and run it in safe mode both times. After the second run: Reboot Normal and post a fresh HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.
Sorry I was unable to respond earlier. The fix that you suggested to me did not seem to work :( . The second time I ran "SpSeHjfix" and clicked "Start disinfection" it completed right away, showing the exact same log file as it did before (indicating that it did not even run a scan?).

Thank you.
This one is being real bad.

If you already have the programs below, no need to download them again. Just follow the directions.

First of all I need you to download some programs for use later.

Download this file and unzip it to your desktop

Download About:Buster from here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder from here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

Then, Download Ad-aware Second Edition here and install it. If you already have Ad-aware Second Edition skip to the next step.

Open adaware and Click the "Check for updates now" line on the main screen. CLick the "Connect" button on the webupdate screen.

If an update is available download it and install it. Click the "Finish" button to go back to the main screen.

Click on the "Settings" button (gear symbol in the upper right corner of the main status screen) in the quick launch toolbar to open the General settings screen. Check the "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal" setting and then click "Proceed" to save your changes

Click the "Scan now" button in the main menu on the left side of the main status screen or use the "Start" button in lower right corner. This will open the Preparing System Scan screen. Please deselect "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat. Then select "Use custom scanning options" and click "CUstomize". This will open the "Scan Settings Page. Make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Scan within archives
Scan active processes
Scan Registry
Deep-scan Registry
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
Scan my Hosts File

Then click on the "Tweak" Button to open up the tweak settings.

Open up the Scanning Engine section and make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Make sure the following is unchecked with a "red" X:

Unload recognized processes & modules during scan.

Open up the Cleaning Engine section and make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Always try to unload modules before deletion
During Removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot.

Click the "Proceed" button to save settings.

Don't scan yet. We will do it in safe mode.

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper. Be sure you have the Helper one. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix You may want to print the rest of these instructions.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

While in safe mode, double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

Then Open cwshredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present

ntrs.exe
apina32.exe
javakg.exe

Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

C:\WINNT\fqxbp.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\ntrs.exe
C:\WINNT\apina32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\javakg.exe
C:\WINNT\winhj.dll
C:\WINNT\atlqr.dll

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\fqxbp.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINNT\fqxbp.dll/sp.html#37049

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then browse to the C:\Window\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then in internet explore click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Now navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply.

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Scan with Adaware by opening it and clicking the "Next" button to start the scan.

When the scan is completed the Performing System Scan screen will change name to "Scan Complete".

Click the "Next" button to get to the Scanning Results screens where more information about the objects detected during the scan is available.

Click the Critical Objects Tab. In general all of the items listed will be bad. Be carefull with the Hosts file entries. Malware uses the hosts file to redirect you websites. However you can use the hosts file as a way to prevent malware. If the object has 127.0.0.1 in it, it should most likely not be deleted as it is protecting against unwanted sites. For more information on how to use a host file to protect yourself read here. So in short, you may or may not want to fix the hosts file entries.

To fix all the bad critical objects do the following:

Right click on one of them to open up the selection screen. Click the "Select All" button to select all entries. In general all should be selected with the exception of the good hosts file entries.

When all are selected Click "Next" and then "OK" in the pop-up window to confirm the removal.

Now reboot, and run hijackthis again and post a fresh log along with the about buster log. :)
Wow, I think that might've done it!

Um, I encountered a few problems during this process:
1. During both steps involving the stopping of the RPC Helper, the following window appeared:
Microsoft Management Console
/ \ Configuration Manager: A general internal error occurred.
/_!_\
2. Also, all of the "R" files in HijackThis were not present except for:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer customized for Verizon Online
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

and also, this was missing:
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\javakg.exe

But overall, it looks good. I changed my homepage, and for once it didn't change back! No popups either. Here are my logs:

Looking much better. Little more to do.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {BE2F2769-8A63-4bc7-8A99-06C2C4AD7B9B} - (no file)

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {BE2F2769-8A63-4bc7-8A99-06C2C4AD7B9B} - (no file) (HKCU)

Resource hogs and not needed at startup.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

use Add/Remove Programs and remove:
Viewpoint Manager

And my computer is running quite well and very smoothly. It's not the cleanest computer in the world (I don't know what files I can delete and which ones are necessary) and I'm not so good at controlling RAM and memory use, but it's doing quite well now.

An odd thing, however: an Internet Explorer webpage (my homepage) always opens on startup, before my DSL even connects to the internet.to the internet. Is this because it is a startup task, or it is an option I turned on in my Internet Explorer? Thanks a lot.
This should stop it from auto loading.
