Hello jkingqm, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. You do have issues that need to be addressed, if you are not receiving help elsewhere, then please follow these directions in the posted order.

1) This is where you HJT is now: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_ENZIP.TEMP\HIJACKTHIS.EXE We must have it in a permanent folder so it can store backups for safety. Do this: Go to C:\ and point at a blank spot then RIGHT click and make a new folder. Call it HJT. Move the HJT from the TEMP folder to this new folder. You can also use these instructions: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html

2) You have a CoolWebSearch infection. Download CWShredder from the following link, update it first then click on FIX not scan. Allow it to run and remove anything it locates. Let me know what it found in your next post.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popu…WShredder.shtml

3) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

4) Download, update, configue and run the most recent versions of Ad-aware and Spybot as they can get to places HJT cannot. Please use this link: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Run these two "big guns" and allow them to remove anything bad they locate. Both programs provide backups for your safety. ***note: please do not activate Spybot TeaTimer until your computer is clean. Run Spybot first and reboot between the scans. It is good to run both programs at least twice, and run the "Full System Scan".

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://216.65.101.250/sbms/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://216.65.101.250/sbms/

See this >> http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.minibug.html

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

7) Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new HJT log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

I don't use Dialpad or Net2Phone anymore, can those entries be deleted? Not sure what the newstand entry is. I ran the online TrojanScan several days ago and it gave me two entries. I deleted one thing it found (C:\Windows\bdl24126.exe). I can't seem to run it again. The other thing was something like C:\Windows\Dowloaded program files\CONFLICT_1\HDPlugin1015.dll.

Thanks,

John
Hello John, You have the HijackThis positioned properly now but somehow you have managed to use a very old version, see this:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.5Scan saved at 11:25:20 PM, on 7/6/05
Platform: Windows 98 SE (Win9x 4.10.2222A)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)

Please delete this version as it is obsolete and use the version 1.99.1 you used in the first log. If you should need a download link: http://www.malwareremoval.com/downloads.html

What about call wave? Is that program working for you? I have heard of problems being caused by it and If you wish it gone let me know.

How about this one, do you use it?

Please post a new HijackThis log along with a list of what old programs you wish removed from your computer and I will give you the instructions for doing this after I view the log.

Thanks…Phil

John, Thanks for the new log, won't make any difference this time but we use a scanner and I have to remove all of your comments from the log before I scan…that is why I asked for a list
I will remove the ones you do not use, and comment later on any you have questions about. Thanks.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WMIEXE.EXE if you want to check it use this tool: http://virusscan.jotti.org/ My scanner show it valid and in the right place.
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…library/wmiexe/

C:\Windows\bdl24126.exe <<< this one is a probblem, make sure it is gone. Search or navigate to that spot. You will have to enable hidden files.

C:\Windows\Downloaded program files\CONFLICT_1\HDPlugin1015.dll.
Do this: Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Settings > View Objects. You may remove any of these you wish. If you go to the site again, you would be prompted to download the .cab files again. All you are using should read "Installed" Anything else like corrupted or disabled should be deleted, not working anyone. The one you asked about should be here.

Run CCleaner again to pick up the Temp and TIF junk, please don't use the Registry Cleaner unless you backup the registry as you are prompted. Send me one last log, include any final questions you have.

Thanks…Phil

Does it look good? I was able to use Online TrojanScan again. Anything obviously "bad" in there?

Thanks, John
Hi John, Your HJT log is clean  how is the computer running now? Have you run your maintenance programs recently?
Here are a few links that may help you tune your Win98 computer:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/usingwi…ing/default.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/usingwi…Apr/Startup.asp
http://www.computertips.com/Windows/Window…ntenancewiz.htm

I would also suggest running System File Checker to make sure all is well:
http://www.whizatpc.com/Kbase%5CKA10115.html

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Make sure you have a firewall running, here is a good one, more are available online with a search for "free firewall".
