Hello there! I have recently encountered many pop up ads on my PC and now my homepage has been reset. I have run several Anti Spyware programs (About Buster, CWShredder, SpyBot Search & Destroy, and AdAware SE) and so far nothing has done the trick. Several find problems and delete them and then find the exact same problems the next time I run them. It also seems as if something has caused problems with my Norton Antivirus software. I am getting error messages there and it cannot remove most problems detected. Any help would be appreciated. I have attached a HijackThis log below:

Close HiJackThis.

Delete these files if listed:
C:\WINNT\system32\winnook.exe

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.
Hello LDTate,

Thank you for the detailed response. I have followed your instructions, however, when I come to the last step of clicking the Scan button from the ActiveScan web page the same annoying hijack about:blank page comes up and the scan does not run.

I did run a new HiJackThis log which is below:

It looks like this didn't do the trick. Is there anything else I can try? Your assistance is very much appreciated.

Thank you,
Jennifer
Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
I was able to run the Ewido scan and it seemed to identify more problems than others. Let's hope it was able to get rid of them as well. Below is the new HiJackThis scan:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode

Press the F8 key, when you see the Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen.

Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

To configure Windows to show all files

Do the following:

On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Do the following:

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY Listed Profile USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Things are looking good! How does it look to you?

Good Job

If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
LD Tate, My PC is running beautifully! Thank you so much for your help. I will certainly follow your recommendations. Would you suggest that I dump (or would I be safe in dumping) my Norton AntiVirus and MS AntiSpyware Beta in lieu of your recommended software? After all of this I have not been too impressed with the service of Norton. Thank you again for all of your recommendations and direction. Jennifer
I use the Grisoft Anti-Virus program myself. Norton's is up to you.

Great job

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help

Peace be with you :wavey:
