I recently bought a computer at a garage sale. The owner said there was nothing wrong with it except that it ran very slowly. I brought the computer home & set it up. Then I noticed that it full of viruses & mal/spyware. I installed McAfee Virus Scan, Adaware, & Spybot, updated them & ran them all. While most of the problems were corrected, some of them were not.
Any help correcting these remaining problems would be appreciated.

Hello lynx560, welcome to the TC.

Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Start the program and then check the I know what I'm doing box.

Move all instances of sfbnsp.dll (and nothing else), to the Remove pane.
Click the Finish Button and reboot.

Find and delete the file c:\windows\system\sfbnsp.dll


1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Thanx for the fast reply LDTate

I downloaded & ran LSPFix.exe as per directions. The file sfbnsp.dll was already in the remove pane so I clicked "Finish" but when I went to restart, I got an error window:

I clicked the close button & am now restarting the computer. I will follow the rest of the directions & then repost a new HJT file

Ok….

After the restart, I looked for sfbnsp.dll in C:\Windows\System but could not find it. I then ran a search for it but "There are no results to display"

Does this sound correct ?

I am now proceeding with your next set of directions

Looks like another one jumped in there. We need to be careful on how we kill this infection. You could lose your ability to connect to the internet.

Please do all the steps in the order they are listed

Uninstall Virtumundo from control panel >> add remove program if listed there

Reboot if Virtumundo is found. If not found just continue.



Start the LSPFix program and then check the I know what I'm doing box.

Move all instances of aklsp.dll (and nothing else), to the Remove pane.
Click the Finish Button and reboot.

Find and delete the file c:\windows\system\aklsp.dll

Empty Recycle Bin

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Ok…

Virtumundo was not found.

LSPFix has:
AKLSP.DLL
msafd.dll
rsvpsp.dll
listed in the "Keep" window

I clicked the "I know…" box & added AKLSP.DLL to the remove window
Finish button clicked

Rebooted

The file aklsp.dll was found & deleted
The Recycle Bin has been emptied

Rebooted

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"



Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press the F8 key until the startup menu appears.

Choose the Safe Mode option then press Enter.



Search for and delete these files if listed:
tfypnk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\rqyokv.exe


To configure Windows to show all files

Do the following:
In Windows, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.




Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.


Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I ran HJT & did a system scan only. I clicked all the entries you listed.
(Did you not list

Restarted in SafeMode

tfypnk.exe was only found in the HJT Backup
"backup-20050626-084550-405-tfypnk.exe"
I deleted this but did not delete from RecycleBin

C:\Windows\rqyokv.exe was found & deleted
I deleted this from the RecycleBin


Windows has been configured to show all extentions & hidden files


In C:\Windows\Temp were 3 folders that I dont think belonged there.
The folders were:
Cookies
History
Temporary Internet Files

I have no idea why they were there but when I deleted them, I was shown an informational window for each that basically stated that the folders were system folders & that if deleted, Windows or another program may not work correctly. Am I sure I want to delete this …. yada, yada,yada
I deleted all 3 folders but will wait on instructions on whether to delete from RecycleBin

I did not find:
C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder
(My OS is Windows ME (Win9x 4.90.3000) - Perhaps it is named something else in WinME)


I deleted the Temporary Internet Files in Internet Options including offline content. I reset my Web Settings but unclicked the HomePage box due to the fact that I have set Spybot to lock the HomePage to "about:blank"

I have emptied the RecycleBin except for the HJT backup & the 3 folders mentioned above. I will delete these if you inform me to do so.

Rebooted

Those are Windows folders. You need to put those back. You can delete ALL files in those folders but Not the folders.

This is oK to leave. HJT sometimes list the 09's as No File File Missing.

After you restore those folders, reboot and let me know how it's going. We still have a little cleanup to do.

thanx… As I stated, the folders mentioned were found in C:\Windows\Temp. The original files are still in C:\Windows Thanx for info on Real Player Am awaiting on advice whether to delete the 3 folders & further cleaning

Lets try this:

To use it:
  • Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and install.
  • Open CCleaner.
  • Place a check by everything in the Applications tab.
  • Place a check by Internet Explorer, Windows explorer, and System in the Windows tab.
  • Hit the button that says Run CCleaner
  • Reboot to remove index.dat files.


1.Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".

2.if user is running Firefox: ,then click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".

3.Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.


How do I restore registry backups if needed?

Right-click on the .REG file created and select 'Merge'.
By default these files will be saved into your 'My Documents' folder
