I'm trying to remove some malware. I can't get Active X controls to work, so I can't perform a Windows Update or scan with Housecall or Panda. I need some help with my HJT logfile and removal of malware.

Thanks

Hi scotthub,

Since HijackThis does not scan the entire system and only certain areas are scanned to help diagnose the presence of undetected malware in some of the telltale places it hides. It is extremely important that you run a full system scan tool like an online virus scan, Ad-aware SE and Spybot S&D. I would like to START with those steps and finish the cleanup of strays or undetected items with HJT. I have provided instructions on how to run scans with a Online virus scanner, Ad-aware SE and Spybot S&D in this post.

1) Run one of these Online virus scanners:2) Download, install, update and run a scan with Spybot S&D:
  • Download and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings.
  • In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
  • Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
  • Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ and then download and install all available Updates.
  • Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’
  • When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window.
  • Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
  • Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
  • REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.
3) Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
        • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
        • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
      • Under Definitions:
        • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
    • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :
      • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
        • Scan Within Archives
      • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
        • choose all hard drives
      • Under Memory & Registry: all green
        • Scan Active Processes
        • Scan Registry
        • Deep Scan Registry
        • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
        • Scan my Hosts file
    • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
      • Under Shell Integration:
        • Move deleted files to recycle bin
      • Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
        • include addtional object information
        • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
        • include environment information
      • Under Alternate Data Streams:
        • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
        • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
    • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
      • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
        • Unload recognized processes during scanning
        • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
      • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
        • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
      • Under Log Files:
        • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
        • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
        • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘Finish’
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
4) Prepare in your reply:
  • A fresh HijackThis log.
Thanks for the help!

Before your post I was able to get Active X working and had downloaded/installed the lastest Spybot & Adaware, and ran Housecall & Panda as well as removed some items from Hijack This I noticed from other logs. Panda was finding Registry items and files refered to as SaveNow, ISTbar, Funweb, Isearch, Comet, My Web Search… I downloaded/install MS AntiSpyware.

Since your post I ran RAV and it found 1 virus in a file on one of the users desktop 2pac2.exe. I saved a log. I deleted it & removed it from the Recycle Bin. Then I ran eTrust and it came up clean. I configured Spybot & Adaware and ran as you instructed. Spybot came up clean and Adaware found 1 cookie. I saved a log. Removed it and rebooted. Ran HJT and here is my log:

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Then, open HijackThis, run a scan and check these items:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/267a86b53c4485…ip/RdxIE601.cab

The following item is an optional. It is upto you whether to check it or not.

This item belongs to an application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. It's somewhat of a resource hog, and some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it usually isn't required. I recommend that you check this item. - Note: if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Now please close all windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking on Fix Checked.

Then, reboot (in the normal mode) and post a new log in this thread.
I followed your instructions and here the new log:

Machine is OK. I still have two files in temp folders I cannot delete. I'm running a panda scan it found some items. I'll post the results when it's done. I want to be sure I clean out all parts of infection. Thanks!
Here is what Panda found: Incident Status Location Adware:Adware/SaveNow - No disinfected - Windows Registry Adware:Adware/ISearch - No disinfected - C:\WINDOWS\downloaded program files\initial.inf Adware:Adware/MyWebSearch - No disinfected - Windows Registry Adware:Adware/ISearch - No disinfected - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\initial.inf Adware:Adware/PurityScan - No disinfected - C:\WINDOWS\system32\TSKMGR~1.EXE If I look in …\Downloaded Program Files\ I can't see the initial.inf file even though I am showing all files, hidden & system. Same for tskmgr~1.exe, in c:\windows\system32\ I have a taskman.exe, taskmgr.com these two have I icons that look like they are associated with command prompt. I also have taskmgr.exe, it's icon is a computer with a waveform on the screen. The only file I have in that subdirectory that starts tsk*.* is tskill.exe So I don't know how to remove these files and I don't know where to find the other 2 registry enteries. Here are two other files I cannot delete, I assume because their in use, which scares me. C:\Documents and Settings\Eminem\Local Settings\Temp\hsperfdata_Eminem\2076 C:\Documents and Settings\Pam Williams\Local Settings\Temp\hsperfdata_Pam Williams\3136 Do you think you can help me remove these? Thanks, Scott
Hi scotthub,

I need you to download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
I need you to run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe.
Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • Registry
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items", please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.
TJ, thanks for all your help on this one. I posted here when SpywareInfo was down. I got my problems resolved when the board came back. I really do appreciate the time you spent on this. Thanks again, Scott
