I'm getting regular IE-popunders, even without starting IE (I normally use Firefox). Ran Spybot & AdAware multiple times. This is an IBM Thinkpad running XP.

Post a fresh HijackThis log as a reply to this thread.
Thanks very much for your reply. I ran Ewido as instructed. The first run, it found and cleaned one item. The second run through, it didn't find anything.

Sadly, the popups remain with me…

Here's the new HJT log:

Thanks again,

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\nanvpm.exe reg_run
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Explorer] C:\WINDOWS\iexplore.exe

O16 - DPF: {FCF289D4-0AC8-4ED8-BE31-E8AF09606AB5} (download_35mb_com.applet) - http://static.35mb.com/applet/applet_o.cab

Fix this line if you or an administrator did not set this restriction in IE or a program such as Spybot S&D wasn't used to set it.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nanvpm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\iexplore.exe << Delete from this location only.

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 4
Reboot normally and download FindQoologic from here: http://forums.net-integration.net/index.ph…=post&id;=134981

Save it to the desktop and run Find-Qoologic2.bat. This will generate a log file; please post the entire contents of the log file here for me to see.

If you receive an error message while running the program such as "C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application…"
Go here and follow the instructions for your operating system, than run Find-Qoologic2.bat again.

Step 5
Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include the FindQoologic log.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
I followed your last set of instructions. This file was not present: C:\WINDOWS\system32\nanvpm.exe

After rebooting (Step 4), I did not get the popups (they previously showed up every time after system startup).

Here's the Find-Qoologic log:

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL FILES FOUND BY THIS METHOD ARE NOT BAD FILES, There WILL be LEGIT FILES LISTED PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FIXING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WHAT IT IS LEAVE THEM ALONE.
some examples are MRT.EXE NTDLL.DLL.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Excellent, thanks once more. I especially appreciate the program recommendations, since I've heard that many of the programs that purport to be spyware removal and prevention tools are themselves spyware or malware. I've been reluctant to try anything other than adaware and spybot. –Stafford
