switpb.exe -> Just can't remove it!

For a while already I have the problem of pop-ups with titles "this add has nothing to do with the website you are visiting". By searching on the internet I found that this problem is linked to the file "switpb.exe". What I usually do is start my computer, press ctrl-alt-delete and close down this file. That works fine, the pop-ups don't show up anymore. But what I don't like is that the spyware is still there and I don't know what sort of influences is has. Sometimes I think it slows down my computer. Please help!

I have run both Ad-aware and spybot, both of them found some problems, among with others something with "istbar". I have saved the logfile of Ad-aware, but don't know if you want me to post it.

I couldn't find much information on this file. Do you know what it is? Right click on the file and choose 'properties', than on the 'version' tab note what the "Company" and "Version" are.

  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.


Step 3
Please delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\switpb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.


Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Let me know what you found out about the SexCams_nl.exe file.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

Thank you so much for your help!

I have done what you asked. The weird thing is that I cannot find the file you wanted information about (the sexcams file). The directory c:\program files\scom does not exist on my computer (also tried to enter it by using dos interface), and when doing a windows search action (all files) I cannot find any file with the word "sexcam" in it..

After this I fixed the things you told me to fix, this worked smoothly. Then I removed "switpb.exe" (no problem) (BTW: there are three other files there named "switpc.dat, switps.dat and switpts.dat) but the file gah95on6.exe does not exist, only a gah95on6.ini exists in the stated directory. I did not remove that file. (By performing a search gah95on6 I also only found the .ini file).
Also in safe mode these files were not there (which probably makes sense).

At the end I ran hijack again, this is the new log:

It appears that the missing file may have just an orphaned entry left in the registry.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SexCams_nl] C:\Program Files\SCom\Dialers\SexCams_nl\SexCams_nl.exe /dontdial

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.


I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
