Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 10:52:12 AM, on 6/22/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Hello, I've been experiencing and trying to resolve my problems for nearly a month now. Approximately a month ago I either had a virus or malware. Whatever happened it caused my McAfee internet security to completely stop working. At first I couldn't even uninstall it. I've finally been able to uninstall it but I can't reinstall the newer version. My drive will read any disk but the McAfee. Also, whatever happened has interfered with my AOL browser. I can read my mail through AOL but that's about it. If I try to read anything through AOLs site or browse the internet it gives me this error message… "The operation could not be completed due to low memory or hard drive space. Please close one or more windows, then try again." Then when I close the window it automatically shuts my AOL off and I have to restart it. I have anAOL for broadband cable internet connection. I can browse the internet if I minimize my AOL window and use IE. I called AOL when this first happened and a man spent about an hour with me and concluded it's not an AOL problem. Also, I uninstalled and reinstalled the AOL just to be sure. I've been on the McAfee forums and have done everything they've told me and it's not helping. I also posted a HJT log here at TomCoyote. Ken looked at my log and didn't find any viruses or malware. I've also done many, many virus and malware scans. All the virus scans came up clean … even the ones done in safe mode and DOS. The malware has been cleaned off as well. Ken thought I should post over here because it's possible there's a problem with my OS as a result of all this. Can someone please help me. This is getting so frustrating now. Whatever is wrong with my computer is way beyond what I know. Thanks in advance to whoever bravely takes on this challenge, Shannon
Hi Shannon :wavey: I looked at the last HJT log you posted for Ken. He's right, there isn't any malware in the log, but there are some things in it that you can "live without" that may help free up system resources for your AOL. Please post a fresh HJT log file in here and we'll see if we can get things back on the straight and narrow. By the way, I use AOL myself, so hopefully this will be a benefit in helping you solve your problems with that software. M68 :)
Thanks M68. Here's my HJT log:

Okie dokie… here we go…

This can be removed:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe

Read about it, and how to turn it off (if you wish) here:

WkUFind.exe

This can be disabled:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Read about it, and how to turn it off (if you wish) here:

qttask.exe

This needs "fixed" with Hijack This!:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DXM6Patch_981116] C:\WINDOWS\p_981116.exe /Q:A

p_981116.exe was introduced to your system as part of a DirectX upgrade. It is not needed for your system to function correctly and can safely be removed with Hijack This!.

This can be "fixed" with Hijack This!:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Read about it here:

realsched.exe

This can be "fixed" with Hijack This!:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] \Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe

Read about it here:

BackWeb-8876480.exe

This can be "fixed" with Hijack This!:

O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe

Read about it here:

LDMConf.exe

Another way to help free up resources is to navigate to this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\prefetch <– folder

Then, delete all the files in that folder.

DO NOT DELETE THE FOLDER!!

Just delete all the files in the folder.

Read about it here:

Windows prefetch

Then you can help system performance by increasing your system's pagefile size.

Go to:

Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System

Click on the "Advanced" tab, then under "Performance", click on "Settings", then the "Advanced" tab, then under "Virtual Memory" click "Change" and change the pagefile size to the maximum your system will allow.

This will allow your system to use part of your hard drive for more memory.

After making all the changes you deem necessary, then reboot, post another log file & let me know if AOL is running better.

We'll work on your McAfee internet security problem once we get AOL back on it's feet.
Thanks so much for your help so far. I did everything you said and I'm still having the same AOL problems. This time I got the insufficient memory message but it didn't boot me off. I still can't access anything but my email. Here's my HJT log:

You've still got two of the items in the log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

If you want to get rid of these, "fix" them with Hijack This!, then reboot.

In your thread you had with Ken, you mentioned that you conect to the internet through AOL cable broadband. If that's the case, you don't need any modem programs running.

After fixing the two thing above, reboot. Then push these 3 keys at the same time to bring up the task manager:

In the Task manger window, click on "Image name" (to sort the running tasks alphabetically), then find GWMDMMSG.exe in the list of tasks. Click it to highlight it, then click "End Process". This program is related to the modem, and this is a test to see if disabling it will help.

Look at the bottom of the task manager. In the bottom right, there is a box with "Commit charge" followed by two numbers. Let me know what the numbers are. Mine says "Commit charge: 340M/1246M". This is a meter of sorts as to how much system resources are being used.

After stopping GWMDMMSG.exe, now run AOL to see if things improve. If for some inexplicable reason stopping this process makes you unable to get online, simply reboot and this program will start again.

Please post another log file & let me know how things are going.
Hi again. I did everything as you said. My AOL started up with no problems despite ending the process to GWMDMMSG.exe. But I still can't access anything but email…are you frustrated yet?

The commit charge looks like this 179M/2017M

Hmmmmm…….

are you frustrated yet?

Not quite yet….

Looks like it's NOT a memory problem….. 179M/2017M commit charge tells me you have plenty of free RAM….

How much space is left on your C: drive?

If you don't know, and don't know how to check, go to:

Start > My Computer, then right-click on "Local disk C:" and choose "Properties".

In the box that pops up, how much "free space" is available?
I have 64.6 GB free. I've suspected all along that I don't have a memory problem. Whatever happened a month ago came in and changed something in the OS … at least it seems like it. That error message I keep getting when I try to access AOL features and the browser is completely misleading.
Hmmm…… :wall:

:D

You have this running:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AOL Fast Start] "C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0a\AOL.EXE" -b

I looked that up. It's supposed to load things into memory to make the "real" AOL program load faster.

Have you tried ending the process AOL.EXE with the task manager, then using your AOL icon to start the AOL program? Maybe this quick start isn't working properly….

This is bizarre problem because AOL actually is just a "front end" for IE. It's strange that AOL doesn't work, but IE does.

I did find a place on the internet that had someone who had the exact same symptoms as you that supposedly "fixed" the problem. The only drawback is that it would cost you about $10 to look at the answer (and I don't even know what the answer was, what they did, or if it actually worked). If you want, I'll post a link to this purported solution and you can decide if you want to spend the money on the off chance that it really would help (which I cannot guarantee).
I went into the Task Manager and I didn't have an aol.exe. I have these instead … waol.exe AOLDial.exe aoltsmon.exe AOLacsd.exe I didn't want to end task on the wrong one. Which one of these should I end task on? I'd love to have the link to the site you found. Do you think it's reliable?
You don't wan't to end any of those…. AOL needs those…

You could try fixing this with HJT:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AOL Fast Start] "C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0a\AOL.EXE" -b

Then reboot & try AOL. The AOL fast start is just a "user preference" item. I'm sure AOL can load without the fast start.

Just in case, before you "fix" that please go here and read AND UNDERSTAND the tutorial on "How to restore items mistakenly deleted" before you decide to try this.

This link tells about that program.

Click here to read about a similar problem to yours that you have to pay to see.

I cannot guarantee the "fix" at the link is reliable or not because I don't have access to view it. If I new someone that had access, I would ask them to send me a copy of the text, but I don't know anyone registered to view those items.
OMG … that's my exact problem. So I guess the risk is paying the money and they were unable to help this person. But $10 isn't really that great of a risk. I'm off to get Fix that AOL.exe. I'll let you know how it goes. ****Just finished "fixing" aol.exe with HJT. AOL opened just fine without it. I just tried gaining access to the internet and I'm still getting the insuficient memory error message. :wall: This is so frustrating.
If you decide to pay the $10 to see the solution, and you want my advice on whether or not you could/should try it, or have any other questions about it that you feel I might be able to help you on, please send me a copy of the "fix" in a PM (private message). The owners of that web site may not like "public" posting of their solutions.
I will definitely do that. I'm going to discuss it with the hubby when he gets home later. Do you have any other ideas for me or have you run out? LOL
