Hello thank you so much for taking the time to review this. :wavey:

I have had the about:blank virus on my computer for several months. I have tried adware, spybot, spysweeper, cwsshredder, Mcafee Anti-virus, diamond tds-3, and a couple programs I'm forgetting. Nothing has worked. It seemed that tds-3 gave the most information, but it was too confusing to actually work with.

The Issues:
Currently, my internet explorer is reseting to about:blank, and will not change. I have been using Mozilla Firefox for several months, as it was reccommended online. My IE still does not work, it either errors, or the screen is over taken by a downscrolling about:blank screen.

The NotePad application for Windows one day disappeared, and I do not know how to get that back.

I tried install the program AdwareAway and recieved this error message "unable to register the DLL/OCX:DLLRegisterServer failed; code 0x80040154"

I cannot install the Microsoft Service Pack 2 "unable to read or write to database."

My Roxio Easy Cd Creator has also stopped working and crashes during the burn process, I uploaded updatecdr4_53_71 an update for the program and still no change.

I can not use the back-up data feature in Windows.

I also get constant pop-ups, usually ones that do not actually link up to a page, but are just broken image links. I would assume this is due to the site the control orginally linked to has been changed or taken down.

So. There is alot of stuff going on, and I was going to try to take care of these issue myself (well I have tried) but at this point I am worried I am going to loose all my information (files) if I start deleting things. Since I can't back-up my work!

Please help if you can! Any information, be it links or a reply would be so appreciated! Thank You. -Charlie

Hello oneirogen and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare SpSeHjfix
    • Download SpSeHjfix from here.
    • Unzip the contents of SpSeHjfix112.zip.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
    • Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
    • When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
    • The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Repeat the process above until you get a log like this - 'not infected'

  • Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix' as a reply to this thread.

Occasionally after running 'SpSeHjfix' you may have trouble getting Internet Explorer to open, if this is the case - just run the System File Checker.

To repair Internet Explorer in Windows XP, complete the following procedure while you are logged on as an administrator:

Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK.

Alsocom thank you so much, for taking sometime to help me with this little/big problem.

I ran both CWSShredder & SpSeHjfix in the exact way you told me too. There was a bit of a problem with rebooting/ reseting, the computer was very slow. But I think I have done as much as I could.

After running both programs, here are the logs.

this is the first SpSeHjfix log.

Looks pretty good. Then… I got online (through AOL 9.0 yuck) and opened Firefox, as soon as I opened Firefox I got a message from Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1

"Search Extender Spyware is trying to install" I blocked the install attempt, and re-ran MMicrosoft AntiSpyware. There are 3 threats. One which is attacking the registery. (c:\windows\system32\jpenca.dll) another that is (about:blank) and the last one is (Search Extender Spyware).

I keep getting pop ups for a BHO, as well.

yeah unfortunately it looks like se.dll is still there and about:blank is still present as well.

So it would seem that there is something that automatically wants to duplicate in the system.. grr, Hope that my descriptions are helpful. Hope to hear more from your end soon! ;)

yeah unfortunately it looks like se.dll is still there and about:blank is still present as well.

Those are one and the same. It looks like this is going to be one of the more pesky variety so it may take a little bit to remove it.

Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here.
ran locate.com log as follows.

* DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.127)

The second box came up with two results
c:\\windows\system32\archlib.dll (1 files with filesize 204800 bytes were found)
and
c:\\windows\system32\logkhkj.dll (0 files with filesize of 0 were found)

archlib.dll was removed from bottom list after re-scan.
Are you using Windows XP Home or Pro?

Copy the following bold text into Notepad.
Name the file Appinit.bat
Save as type All Files
Save on the Desktop.

Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
ren windows1.hiv windows.txt

Double click on Appinit.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
(the text in the file will look strange, don't worry about it, just make sure you copy the whole thing)
I am currently running Windows XP professional.

My Notepad is non-existant. It one day stopped working and I'm not sure how to reload the program, currently the icon comes up as a broken link and all notepad files open in wordpad. Can wordpad be used? I did not see the save as type - all files, available in wordpad.
I've never tried it with WordPad so let's get notepad working for you first.
Go to the following link and download a copy of notepad for Windows XP. Be sure to unzip it then copy notepad.exe to C:\WINDOWS and C:\WINDOWS\System32.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winfiles.html#notepad

Now try following the previous instructions again.

I'm off to bed now as it is after 6 a.m. here. I'll check back in before leaving for work.
here is what I got from the newly created window.txt, thank you so much for helping with the notepad issue! I love how microsoft cover the bear-minimal of possible issues in their help sections. is there supposed to be more text? from the copy? regf
The whole .txt file will not post in this forum box, however the process went through and I do have a .txt file that "looks weird" that has a bit of information and some strange code things. the system32\logkhkj.dll is somewhere in the mix.
Received your e-mail but it showed the same as was posted above. regf Please post a fresh Hijackthis log and I will construct the next set of instructions for you.
Actually, let's do the following instead. I won't need to see a new Hijackthis log just yet.
I'm doing this fix as you stated above that the hidden file was showing in the windows.txt file that will not post properly.

**Please remember to keep Internet Explorer closed and disconnect from the internet while following these instructions**

1. Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

2. Click the "go" tab. Find the: "Appinit_Dlls" key in the right hand pane and and double click to find the "Value" data. Confirm that C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\logkhkj.dll appears in the 'Value' field.

3. Using Windows Explorer, go to your root drive: C:\ and create a new folder called 'Hijack' and within that folder, create two new folders, one called 'Backups' and one called 'Junk'.

4. Use the Registrar Lite program. Copy and paste the key below into reglite's address bar and click 'Go':

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\

5. Click on the Windows key to highlight it in purple, and use the top menu File>Export and save as (in the C:\Hijack\Backups folder):

1) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

6. Navigate to C:\Hijack\Backups and confirm both files have been successfully saved.

7. Use the Registrar Lite program again. Copy and paste the key below into reglite's address bar and hit 'Go':

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

8. Right-click on the Windows key in the left pane and rename it to notwindows. Then double-click "Appinit_Dlls" value in right pane and erase the data in the 'Value' box at the bottom of the new pane.

The data to remove will be:

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\logkhkj.dll", hit 'Apply' and 'Ok' to set.

9. Rename 'NotWindows' back to 'Windows' in the left pane

10. close Registrar Lite and reboot the computer. If everything works the hidden process will not run at startup and you should now be able to find and *see* logkhkj.dll in

C:\WINDOWS\System32.

11. Unzip and run Winfile from Winfile.zip. Open it up, click File > Move

12. Copy and paste this into the 'From' box:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\logkhkj.dll

13.Copy and paste this into the 'To' box:

C:\Hijack\Junk\logkhkj.dll

14. Click OK. Close Winfile and check in C:\Hijack\Junk for that file and report back the contents of the junk folder.
Everything worked up till the winfile.zip, which would not work in Winzip or the other .zip program I have used. Do you have another link to the file? "it does not appear to be a valid archive" is the error message.
Did you get Winfile.zip downloaded?

Once it is downloaded, right click on it and choose Extract All… This will open the Extraction Wizard. Select next and choose a location to extract the files to (I suggest the desktop), select next, then Finish. Locate the Winfile Folder on the destop (or from the location you placed it) and open it. Double click the Winfile.exe file inside to run the program.
