i acc dl a file which i can now not get rid off because "it's in use by a program". also several programs seem to b running in the background. spyware programs don't seem to detect them. if i use explorer (to browse my own files), the cpu usage goes up very rapidly.

Hello babu and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

If the mad.dll item will not go away after this fix, we'll need to do a manual removal of it.

Step 1
Go here and follow the instructions on removal for TvMedia. Reboot when finished removing.

Step 2
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After the computer is clean it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Step 3
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
R3 - URLSearchHook: {A4A58A2C-B039-432B-8BC1-DCA7AC0757DC} - - (no file)

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
hello,

thank you for your reply. the removal tool for tvmedia didn't detect it on my pc, at least that's what it said.
i ran the scan, and tried to fix the checked items, and i got this message;

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at [removed], reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2900.2180
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

**Please remember to keep Internet Explorer closed and disconnect from the internet while following these instructions**

1. Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

2. Click the "go" tab. Find the: "Appinit_Dlls" key in the right hand pane and and double click to find the "Value" data. Confirm that C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mad.dll appears in the 'Value' field.

3. Using Windows Explorer, go to your root drive: C:\ and create a new folder called 'Hijack' and within that folder, create two new folders, one called 'Backups' and one called 'Junk'.

4. Use the Registrar Lite program. Copy and paste the key below into reglite's address bar and click 'Go':

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\

5. Click on the Windows key to highlight it in purple, and use the top menu File>Export and save as (in the C:\Hijack\Backups folder):

1) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

6. Navigate to C:\Hijack\Backups and confirm both files have been successfully saved.

7. Use the Registrar Lite program again. Copy and paste the key below into reglite's address bar and hit 'Go':

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

8. Right-click on the Windows key in the left pane and rename it to notwindows. Then double-click "Appinit_Dlls" value in right pane and erase the data in the 'Value' box at the bottom of the new pane.

The data to remove will be:

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\mad.dll", hit 'Apply' and 'Ok' to set.

9. Rename 'NotWindows' back to 'Windows' in the left pane

10. Close Registrar Lite and reboot the computer. If everything works you should now be able to delete this file.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mad.dll.

Let me know if you had any complications with these instructions. There will be more to do yet after this fix.

The new log appears clean. :)

You have made changes to your Registry with Regedit/RegLite and the security permissions have been lowered when you renamed the Windows Key folder.

To repair the security permissions please do the following:

1)Please navigate to C:\Hijack\Backups and double click on the winkey.reg file and merge the information into the registry.

2)Now open Regedit/RegLite and go to File > import Winkey.hiv into the registry.

3)Copy and Paste the following bold text into the address bar of Reglite (navigate to this location with Regedit)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

4)Delete the entry in the AppInit_DLLs Value key which will look like: C:\Windows\System32\mad.dll and then close Regedit/RegLite. (the file no longer exists at that location so the registry entry is an orphan entry)

5)Reboot

Let me know how the computer is working now. If everything is fine than I'll give you some recommendations to help better secure the computer.
thank you! i repaired the security permissions as you said. everything seems fine. i bought this computer 2ndhand and it was infested with spyware. hitman pro en ms antispyware took care of most of it but some of the spyware seemed pretty persistant, eg the tv media malware. so thank you for finally getting my pc clean. if you have any recomendations about raising the security please let me know.
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
